SF3: 3rd Strike Grandmaster Invitational Thoughts & Opinions

Just to be super clear on this–I’m not trying to make a case for why I was on the stage.

Renic for President.

Just wanted to say good stuff to Sanchez. Like I said, you were pretty much the only one that made things entertaining and managed to get some reactions from the crowd. Keep doing commentary too; you saved Melty Blood.

The Arcade Infinity stuff is something that probably wasn’t followed much by people outside of California. When you live somewhere other than New York or California you’re struggling to remember what an arcade scene used to be like because it’s been around 10-15 years without one. Vanilla came out in 2008 which is what everyone in your neck of the woods started playing that year and 3rd Strike was 9 years old by then. Living in Pennsylvania and not in Philadelphia which may or may not have had a few SF4 cabs the majority of us had to wait until February 2009 for the console release. Lastly this is not meant to piss you off but even though California players have this belief that California is the mecca for the United States in regards to competitive fighting games and has all the top US players living there the rest of the country does not drink the kool-aid and just go with it.

I guess I could complain and say many bad things about the “3S Grandmaster Invitational”. I don’t want to. I enjoyed watching people who enjoy playing 3S. This event was the only thing that interested me about this years Evo and I was pleasantly surprised.

Sorry if I came off as an asshole. This forum just has me all clenched up ever since '09. Mad respect for keeping in the hustle alive in a place without arcades. I got some buddies from the midwest and the east coast and some of the stories I get about the scenes out there just make me grateful I live in Cali.

Thanks, man. The Japanese stole my commentary. I want my royalties!

Don’t worry about it. I live in Pittsburgh and there really isn’t a scene. The people who post in the Pittsburgh thread under the Atlantic North section of regional matchmaking consist mainly of college students who have random get togethers when there isn’t a semester in session at someones house. They are a little more organized during school semesters, this coming fall semester in particular where a Carnegie Mellon student reserved rooms for them to play every Thursday for the whole semester. They’re not a very welcoming group as far as new people showing up to play goes. I went last fall to two sessions at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and got bad vibes from all but two people. Needless to say I never went back. I offered to start some small scale tournaments with TE sticks as prizes and was told by “the scene” that I shouldn’t bother because they will be the only ones who will show up. They love traveling to Ohio for real small tournaments though with shittier prizes than what I was going to offer. A big thing for me too was that they only seem to play the most current fighting games and not the classics such as 3rd Strike, CVS2, and MVC2.

Sanchez was the reason I didn’t want to miss this. DAS BOOT!

lol@people arguing over this. if anyone i think ken i, hungbee, and emphy all have a gripe to make since they all play non ken.chun.yun characters and all of them are known to love parrying. all in all i think the exhibition was a fail but dont hate the players, the game. this game isnt very flashy at high levels and most of game is played through mindgames not ultra combos… sorry to disappoint the new crowd but it is what is it. gj repping sanchez btw, we all love you. and on that note, get your ass to SUPER ARCADE!!! pz.

Yes, sir!

I didn’t even connect you the poster here with the person there. I remember reading a big thread about Alex supers in which I’m pretty sure you went on at length about how SA3 had no actual useful application ever. I’ll never forget that avatar.

The sad part is I’ve been working on a video illustrating that point for the better part of 6 years. I should probably finish it before OE is released.

It was boring, imo rom and li joe and possibly a real international player shoulda been in there. Hell I didn’t get an invite regardless me getting constant win streaks at the 3s booth… but hey they invite whoever

Also why was there no urien or yun ? That woulda made it hype…

Too much thong action and maybe Capcom was like, “Oh, there’s enough Yun being shown for SSF4…” but who the fuck cares?

Oh, just for the record, Sanchez did make top 8 at EVO 2K9 for 3rd Strike. Just to address that certain point that LittleJimmy made. (Shoutouts to R-Truth?)

Sorry about that. I forgot about 2009 with the 3rd Strike 2V2. After 2008 when they stopped making the DVD’s it’s been harder to remember who placed in the top 8 for the games played. At least in the old EVO’s when I forget I just pop in the DVD.

Is there video of the 3s tournament online?

Was there lag with the setups/new filters? Because good players were missing pretty basic shit. I suck at 3S, but I can parry the last hit of Chun’s super. And there seemed to be some issues with hit confirms, but I don’t know if that was just rust.

I thought it was good, though I also thought it could have been a lot better then it turned out. I kinda followed the 3S scene a few years back, watching the folks like Amir, Gootecks and Pyrolee play in 3S ranbats. I wasn’t there, but I caught the vids that were recorded and eventually posted on the internet. So, seeing some of those players still playing 3S to this day I thought was fun.

The cast of players I thought was good, albeit kinda questionable. Mike Z? I’ve got endless respect for Mike Z and I consider him to be my fighting game hero, but I didn’t really know he played 3S. He pretty much got trashed in nearly every match he played, but hey…props for trying to break the mold with Makoko SA3. Big props to Sanchez for making the matches hype near the end when people were losing interest. In the end, I liked what I saw, and I was happy to see these old school 3S players still playing, but…it just didn’t connect with the crowd, and that almost always kills any showing of a competitive game, in my opinion.

The exhibition was OK, I think that’s a fair way to describe it.

Just a couple of things:

  • Yeah, the player selection could’ve been better. No disrespect to the dude who used Makoto, but there is only one Makoto player in my book, and he goes by Sextaro and/or Ken-I. No doubt Sanchez was the star of the show, the guy even used Q for cryin’ out loud! And hey, it’s called a fucking EXHIBITION for a reason, yet everyone on stage stuck to their guns and used the same characters for the most part. BE A MAN! CHOOSE TWELVE!! Where was level select at? This game has awesome music and we got Alex/Ken,Necro/Twelve, Elena, and Ibuki stage outta the way. But no Akuma stage? For shame.

  • Most people are quick to say the exhibition was boring, but let’s keep in mind this was already around 5+ hours into Evo. By that point, a lot of people were trying to conserve their energy and take a breather because Marvel 3 and AE were right around the corner. By comparison the 3S exhibition was much more hype than the freakin’ TTT2 exhibition, and the Tekken exhibition took place around the 3rd hour of Evo.

  • At the end of the day, it’s just an exhibition. It’s Pre-Season. It’s Spring Training. The players know there’s really nothing at stake, and the audience knows there’s nothing at stake. So…how exactly are you supposed to generate hype? The organizers should quickly put together a 8 man tourney with $300 - $500 at the end of it, all 2/3 rounds. And maybe no same character selection in consecutive rounds, just so we can get some variety. Hell, something like that could’ve injected some life into the TTT2 event.

The set up was a little off. Regardless of who was gonna play on stage that shit was gonna be hoopty looking.

I’m mad at whoever was playing that ass Makoto. He didn’t go for karakusa loops. He was using SA3… Too much tsurugi (but i guess that’s okay playing against non-shotos *Chun-Li> b+hp…
Overall it was entertaining to watch. More fun than watching SF4 chess matches but I MK9 was the craziest thing to watch @ EVO. I’d love to see it there again.
Can’t wait for 3SOE
