Udoneko are you still accepting test pages? Because if you are I’d like to give it another try.
maybe he is from Udon and he’s play’n a game (…mmmm maybe not)
Great stuff!! IMO you already have the Udon standards
ok, i’m a little bothered by all of this. here are my two cents.
first of all, to the guy that heavily criticized know one’s art…dude…i would like to hear if you critiqued the art in the SF comic, cuz if you’re picking on a few things here and there from these test pages, i hope you’re having a headache picking out all the “errors” in the SF comic. panels and editing have a LOT to do with the flow of talking and action sequences. you don’t need to have so many different shapes or sizes of panels to make something stand out, it’s the art that matters THE FRIGGIN most. it’s what we’re buying here, not the shape of panels. sometimes the panels in the SF comic confuse the hell outta me and i’ve been reading so many comics for so many years. transformers G1 is another one with confusing panels. and another thing i’m “critiquing” on is, sometimes the pages look so cluttered with your “different shaped” panels. the only thing i can say to know one is…lessen on the pressure when you draw man…some of the lines are too thick. but over all?? yo, this stuff is comic level and he SHOULD get a job at udon.
i’m not here to start a fight or whatever, and i’m happy that the SF comic is doing all right, as i’m also buying them as well, this coming from a fellow asian and artist, i’m glad to see your stuff is out there. but for udon and senordd to critique someone’s art work and say “you need more work” and “you have potential”…i’m speechless.
and why is that??
ok, i’ve wanted to say this for quite some time now, and i’m just gonna do it. the ONLY thing that makes the udon comic’s art look nice is NOT the drawing themselves, but the coloring. that’s right, the coloring. there’s some nice work here and there in some panels, but overall, it’s not consistent. ESPECIALLY with the past few issues. if this sounds harsh, well, i’m sorry, but it’s the damn truth. i’m continuing my purchases of the SF comic, why? cuz i’m anxious to see if al’s art will improve. which in most cases happens with many artists…but somehow, i’m getting disappointed. sorry erik, if you tell me that it’s because he’s backed up with so much work, sorry, not a good excuse. you get into this business, hell, ANY business, be prepared for what’s ahead of you. i like al’s work, i really do, but i want to like it more. you want people like to me to shut up? then get your act together. it almost seems to me that al is getting tired (already) of doing SF and wants to move on to other projects, like MOST american comic artists (which pisses me off btw). arn’s work is nice, but so far, he’s only good at covers and poses…i saw his name credited as another artist that drew the comic in issue 9…where was it?? look, i know all the people at udon comics are young, and i know you all want a life…but in this feild of work, you have to sacrifice one thing for the other.
i may be blowing a lot of things out of proportion, but this has to be said. i don’t know what is involved in the comic industry and what happens to keep the cogs turning, but i do know quality. i hate to do this comparison, but if you look at manga…dude…almost all the stuff out there, black and white, looks better than most of the stuff here. not to sound like a jerk and spiteful…but al, arn and other udon artists have “potential”. keep working harder, stay focused, and “love” your work.
(cont)
You DO realize that udoneko is Erik Ko, the head guy at Udon Comics, right? I’d like to think he’s qualified to tell me or know-one weither or not the stuff is up to par.
(cont from previous post)
so far erik, the people here are saying he’s done good work and it’s udon level. i say yes. as a matter of fact, i think he’s up there with the top artists of today. lines are thick, but that can be fixed. no offense, but if you tell me his art is not your “standard”…dude, i don’t know what else to say.
and i repeat…al and arn do good work…but it can be better.
like i said, so far, people think this kid’s got good art…if you say he’s not up to snuff, well, that only means you’re looking down on al and arn as well. and let’s not forget, when you critique his art, the intentions are wanting to help him get better. same here, if i sounded cruel, well, my intentions are wanting udon to become one of the leading studios.
at first i was hesitant about posting my opinion, seeing as how you don’t really take criticisms that well in the past…this is how the world is, accept it.
i apologize if this post seemed angry, but with all the inconsistency of the comics, and the “critiquing” of know one…well, i just had to say something.
apathy, i can care less if he’s the president of the US. so friggin what?? hmmm…then i guess, all the heads and top executives at any studio really knows what we want then right?? cuz they’re the HEAD GUYS, that means every decision they make is right huh???
cough cough coughstreetfightermoviecough cough…
So you think your opinion on the matter should carry more weight than the EIC of the company?
yes, that’s right apathy, cuz we all know MY opinion is the end all, be all. my opinion should matter the most cuz it’s ME.
clearly you don’t understand the reasoning behind my post. i ask you to read it again, think about it, then come back to me.
and since when did opinions become wrong?? i mean, tell me apathy, did i miss something? perhaps you’re one of the people that inflate the heads of UDON, and now their egos are so high, that they think their skills surpass the normal person. (in case you don’t realize…that remark is sarcasm).
so i guess my opinion doesn’t matter…hmmm…then i guess we shouldn’t have a voting system to decide the next president, or emails telling companies how to make a product better…cuz you know, according to you, opinions shouldn’t be said, only thought.
So you agree? Your opinion on the matter isn’t more important than the guy who actually makes the decisions?
Oh no, I get it. I don’t want it, but I get it.
“Udon doesn’t know what they’re talking about, I do, listen to me.”
What the hell are you ranting about? You pulled all that out of your ass from the one line I posted? Wow…just…wow.
Very simpley: You need to chill. You’re an art student? Good luck with the critiques, pal. If you flip out this much over somebody else’s review, you’re gonna have a nice short career ahead of you.
first of all, i saw some of your art before with the mouse thing…it seems you do nice work…(i would like to see your art with pencil)
so, if you’re also an artist…you’re actually telling me i’m wrong with my opinions about the art from udon?? if you’re defending them, then that means you’ll like anything.
and i’m flipping out over someone’s critique?? then you REALLY didn’t get my post…please, do read it again. it’s like this…example…i’m trying to do anime style. i bring it to japan, and a bunch of anime artists say “yatta!! you got it!!” ok…i did it. now, i bring it back here…and a bunch of american artists say no, you failed. who will i listen to??
what i’m trying to get at here, cuz you clearly don’t understand my post…is, udon’s artists are not all that hot…if you’re not that good, DON’T come to me and say i’m not good. simple. clear. end of story. another example…i don’t go to george lucas and ask him if i’m doing martial arts moves correctly for my movie, i ask jackie chan. get it??
“So you agree? Your opinion on the matter isn’t more important than the guy who actually makes the decisions?”
yes i do agree. anything else??
“Oh no, I get it. I don’t want it, but I get it.
“Udon doesn’t know what they’re talking about, I do, listen to me.””
if you did, we wouldn’t be having this conversation…

simply put…my motive behind my post is clear…what is yours?? tell me, what is YOUR reason for coming in here and telling me that my opinion is less important. so clear that up for me will ya? you know, with my short career ahead of me and all…i may not pick up a few things here and there…(SARCASM)
common knowledge that someone’s opinion is but a small voice in a large group. but once someone hears it, and it could make a difference, why the f not? again, i didn’t come in here and start a war. i’m critiquing someone about their critiques…something wrong with that?? oh i see…cuz it’s erik…the EIC of UDON, then it’s ok. or just a normal person critiquing someone that is not al or arn…then it’s ok. but once someone that has an opinion (a less important opinion, according to you) that is different, i get flamed. ok…good luck living in this world, you going places my man!!
Alright, I’m not going to continue this with you on here because you’re clearly insane and cannot see what an ass of yourself you’re making.
I’m glad you think my art is alright, but please stay away from any and all threads that I mistakenly make with my pencils in it. I don’t need people like you standing up for me and telling a potential employer they suck and “aren’t all that”.
You are the exact reason I did not post my same 3 page submission on these forums.
If you simply have to reply to this, then click my AIM icon and IM me.
this is some truly terrific sketches =) he should be in the Udon team lol
yes, i agree.
Whoa smeg…those pages rocked! Especially the last one with Vega and all those fighters in the cage with him… that page was sweet! ^^
Wow! Thanks Ryu’s Dark Hado, not for standing up for me, but for just standing up. I totally agree with you with your opinion. I take criticism well, but the critiques seemed so biased. I thought maybe I was blind or something. I mean, how could I be doing so wrong, but the Udon staff was doing so right. I mean I loved the covers, but majority of the interior art was so inconsistent, and sometimes so bad, I would be hesitant to buy the book. The fact that I was a SF fanatic made me purchase the comic. In all honesty, Udon compared to Masoami Kanzaki’s SF2, I prefered Kanzaki’s. The art was more consistent and alot more enjoyable. I know I need improvement as an artist. I’m not denying that fact, but so do some of the Udon Staff. I can try to be timid and hold my tongue so that I don’t hinder my chances of becoming part of the Udon staff, but I’ll be honest. I am not a fan of all their artist. I wish SenorDD and Erik would be as tough on his current staff as they were on me, then maybe the complaints about the art would decrease or cease. This view does not change the fact that I would still love to have the opportunity to work for Udon. I’m just seeking fairness. You know that the flaws in my art, like the ones stated, could be easily fixed under the supervision of an editor. If I was working under Udon, these problems would be easily and quickly fixed before publication. I mean where I currently work, I have a boss that hates everything I initially do. LOL. In the end though, she always ends up satisfied. I hope no one mistakes the intentions of my reply. I am not saying I am better than anyone at Udon, but I will not say that I am less thaneveryone at Udon.
As for SenorDD to compare me to Alvin is an insult. Not to me, but to Kinu Nishimura, as Alvin and I are both imitators of the same originator. I cannot give credit to him. My credit goes to the Capcom Design team for influencing and motivating me with their inspiring works. I Thank them, Ikeno, Akiman, Kinu, Bengus, Shoei, and the rest I have no idea as to what their names are. I apologize. In the end, everyone’s opinion is exactly that, one opinion, and we all matter. To each his own as it is said. To work for Udon though, one opinion matters more than the rest. If I never work under the Udon banner, I am happy to have some people feel that I was up to standard, and especially the one(Bongani) who thought I exceeded. Thank You all and to Ryu’s Dark Hado for being fair.

Know-One
Hi, i know your last reply sounded like a closing statement , but just thought I’d let u know my opinion now that i have the actual issue ten sitting infront of me ( which i loved, udon rock ).
So basically I think your work is great, certainly at professional standard, of your three pages i think that page 2 is stronger than the second page of that scene in the comic, i just really like the way you’ve drawn balrog, his face looks cool, and the top panel angle is real nice …so well dun totally on that…as for the first page, i dont think there’s ,much between them, maybe that the boxer character balrog is fighting looks a little too similar to balrog himself, and there’s something about the impact panel in your page that feels a little less effective, like his arm hasnt extended or swung as much, but a strong page and not far off the final one used…your vega last page was kinda cool, but i dont think i like the two jumping guys in the background ,and i dont think you’ll disagree with me when i say that udons final page really was awesome, so alot to live up there. But i just wanted to say that your work was great , and i hope to see more of it in the future. Cheeers
My 2 cents: The pages I see here look better than the actual issue 10 pages. Better choice of perspective anyway. Especially on the last page where:
- It looks like Vega’s SF2 stage
- It appears that Vega has already finfished 2 guys
To Know-one:
Dude, chill out man. The way I read Udon’s comments, he wasn’t bashing your art. Just because he said the other pages didn’t match up to page 2 doesn’t mean that pages 1 & 3 suck.
Also, from what I read of your post, I got a bitching and whining tone from it. There’s no better way to get in good with a comic group than complaining that they didn’t like your art… You may have just fucked yourself out of a job there… GGPO
ATROCIOUS!!!
