Seksi harasho! Let's talk sexualization in SG here. AND HERE ONLY! >_<

I polled fighting game fans in a few different communities. The response was immediate, very supportive, and almost overwhelming.

As for why everyone wasn’t included, it’s called a focus group for a reason. I’m simply not interested in the opinions of people who are not interested in fighting games, do not play them, or do not buy them for others.

Did you happen to poll people outside of Skullgirls threads?

Yyyyyyyyyup.

My bad, then. After only seeing you post in the GD and not in, say, the FG General here, I just assumed you’d only posted in Skullgirls-related places. There’s still a few flaws in using a poll in something like this, but the sexism side’s arguments also tend to be riddled with flaws anyway.

The real problem here is people trying to white knight by saying that anything that’s shows anything that’s sexy and revealing is sexist. As that video I posted states, the human body is beautiful deal with it. Just because something it sexy doesn’t mean it’s sexists. If the game were really sexist, then it would have the girls in secondary, negative roles which clearly isn’t the case. Not only does everyone qualify for being an action girl, most positions of power that we know of are filled by women (the ate queen, the princesses, even Marie herself as the Skullgirl). At the same time, the males in positions of power are all dependent on women.

Well, the problem with their arguments is that they’re not me, and I’m awesome. Yeah.

(In all seriousness, I’m still just trying to prove how stupid the idea of complaints about sexism in Skullgirls are, I’m just using extra-ordinary methods to do it and hopefully amuse people in the process, which brings me to…)

I can understand why they do it. After all, we do know that white knighting on the internet has gotten people mad amounts of pussy (or dong, if they prefer… I’m an equal opportunity jackass).

If you want discussions like this, at least title it properly. “Sexualisation” would be far more accurate.

There is no sexism in Skullgirls. This is not opinion, it is fact.

There will be more trolls after release. You need some rules to be able to infract and ban them, amiright? ^___________^

Yeah, topic title should be changed to that.

I like (and play) a good amount of ‘sexy’ characters in fighting games, so it’s definitely not something I have a problem with. You could classify maybe 50-60% of the Skullgirls cast as sexy, but as far as I can tell, it’s not played up too much for most of them. The only thing that strikes me as odd is how common it is for the characters to have huge breasts, which is a really minor thing when I think about it. I think it’ll become even less noticeable once the game gets more characters via DLC (and/or a sequel).

i agree, the discussion is more about over sexualisation in video games. i think its a problem in skullgirls. we have 7 characters so far. of those 7 we have 4 in miniskirts, 1 in hotpants, 1 in a loincloth, 1 in a dress & bloomers. (the last two are the non sexual characters in the game imo, painwheel and peacock). my question is why no one wears pants!?

Im just wondering if the sexism complains would be the same if skullgirl is develop by capcom or an famous japanese developer instead of reverse labs ?

Looks at Arcana Heart

Probably.

@firebranded: dude, if you are just going to try to troll here, please just leave. this thread was created as a place for people who want to discus this issue and if you have nothing constructive to contribute please done contribute anything at all.

I second this. I’m happy the forum has been surprisingly cordial and civil with the topic so far, and I think making it’s own thread was a good thing, both for cleaning up the GD, as well as giving this topic some more concentrated, genuine discussion.

please stop that silly shit

Well I gave a reason as to why no one wore pants. But seriously, Skullgirls isn’t sexist because there are no males to compare the females to in the game.
Skullgirls has sexualization, but isn’t that typical of nearly every female in a video game? If you try to argue skullgirls is sexist then you don’t know the meaning of sexism. If you try argue that skullgirls has sexualization then congratulations you’ve just pointed out that skullgirls has what 90% of other females in a fighting game have…sex appeal. What more is there to argue? what am I missing?

well, you have this whole conversation figured out so how about you just leave and let the rest of us talk it over without you.

That’s not so much about sexism as it is LOL PEDO PEDO PEDO DERP!

I apologize for being blunt. It’s just that heavy discussion about sexualization and sexism is the last thing skullgirls needs right now.
There are so many amazing features about this game that should be discussed. It’s innovative anti-infinite system, it’s unparalleled balance, it’s robust story mode, god there are so many things! But here we are getting hung up on a trivial issue that people love to exploit. Sadly, the sex talk is the Achilles heel of this game. It’s one thing people can mudsling about Skullgirls because everything is else is damn near perfect.

Fact of the matter is, people won’t admit that Skullgirls featuring sexualized women isn’t new. Cartoonists and Comic Book artists have sexualized women for generations. Video game developers as well. It’s just that I think people are scared of the success this game could have on the industry and are trying to find a way of bringing it down through the clever ruse of “Skullgirls is sexist/over-sexualized”

first off, your reply to my first post wasnt blunt, it was juvenile and stupid.
second off, this is a topic made to discuss the sexualization and accusations of sexism in this game. if you want to talk about all the amazing features of the game (which we all acknowledge are amazing and awesome and all that jazz) by all means do it, but this is not the thread for it.
third off, i doubt a single person here would try to claim that this is a new trend. everyone knows that hyper sexualization has pervaded fan culture for a long time now.
fourth off, no one here is trying to bring down skullgirls, we are all looking forward to the game. we are all fans. we just want to discuss an aspect of the game that others have deemed not fitting for general discussion so we have had out own thread made to discuss what we are trying to discuss. if you do not want to discuss this aspect of the game the solution is simple, do not come to this thread or take part in the discussion. if you do want to take part in this discussion, by all means stay but please have some real content to contribute.

Alright, well you’ve piqued my interest. What’s your opinion on the “sexism” and “sexualization” in this game? If my conspiracy theory is wrong then by all means enlighten me. Are the character portrayals in Skullgirls truly over the top? We see Ivy being paraded around in less than a swim-suit with enormous breasts and ass in Soul Cal. Yet just because there are a few male characters in the game no one cares. I think the situation just boils down to a double standard in the industry. If Skullgirls was renamed Skullbros and there was a cast of male and female characters at launch including the original 7, the accusations of sexualization and sexism wouldn’t be around.
