I went back to that boss fight in Yakuza 3 to check it out.
Yeah there is a trick since he stays in RED HEAT after taking out his brass knuckles and does fuck you up (I got cornered on the side of the desk, couldn’t even dodge away).
- Equip a weapon
- use an item to get enough HEAT to do an attack
- backup out of his reach, wait for the Triangle Prompt and end him.
FEEL THE HEAT -> HEADBUTT didn’t kill him off on Normal. Maybe it doesn’t on any difficulty level. Came up when he had like 65% and then he had 15% or so so it still did 50%.
You could get “RE-GUARD” after leveling up to better block back-to-back, or just take your hits and dodge and get out of his range, heal up if you get hit. The ability ‘Taunt to get HEAT’ helps too if you want a long fight and build up heat thru regular attacks, which gets blown up when you get hit/knocked down. Or if just need a little more to reach lv 1 HEAT.
They introduce buying weapons right before you enter the door, but Kamiyama himself doesn’t have anything in stock if you run over there (they block the shortcut alley behind the bar to the ice cream shop for some reason too), the truck has way more stuff. Stuff you actually don’t need and can do it all better on a budget! Find the Gambling house across from the fish market in the alley. Buy 15K worth of tags and get that Red Gamblers Armor from prize exchange. Basically the defacto armor in all the games, you really don’t need any others outside of for a few times, few rooms usually toward the very last part of the game where enemies have guns, or a boss, and you might want a few more points in GUN defense.
Pawn Shop has a better wooden sword for cheap too. 3 Part Heat action, but way more base ATK power than the pole Kamiyama gives you for free which does a 3 hit move too. Too bad it doesn’t do all the damage of beating up the Tamashiro family goons you get plenty of practice when you take one of their swords. Those guys were dying from full healthbars after the sword HEAT attack.
Then you don’t get to find the locker keys either until Kiryu reflects on the beach at night and one’s right there. And guess items breaking only give you 50, but it is nice to see the EXP bar build up a bunch more times a fight than just after enemy kills. Now, forgot where you get the Yakuza Training Armor. In 5, you get it so late, but it probably has the biggest EXP boosts in the whole series, a shame.
Prepare your inventory when you finally leave for Tokyo too, because you get there and are sealed off in one area you’re stuck at with only a few stores you can go in - can’t get to your item bank, can’t even save, and have a boss fight with a guy with a sword. They give some items on the battle map, of course, then break the cabinets at the top of the stairs for a few more.
