Screw you and your subscriber only chat rooms

I wanna weight in here, but I’m not sure how to proceed. Let me try and put this in a way that my intended audience will understand…

<span style=“color: rgb(51, 204, 0);”>>implying 4chan is the entire Internet

>implying that you’re a part of the FGC

>implying that you don’t just want to keep trolling for free

>implying that hype is “Kappa” and “Spooby Please”

Either pay up or go the fuck away. I’d prefer you did the latter, but I can see some benefit from the former, too.

What if suddenly… paid stream chat drives the people that desire free stream chat into IRC?

I think free stream chat ought to be a good thing, because back in the day of the arcades, it didn’t cost anything to simply walk in and join in on the hype of people watching a hype match. If anything, there ought to be MORE ways for the remote audience to cheer for what’s happening, ways that are both free and that allow donations/monetary support/fees. We are fans and homers just like the fans and homers of every other thing that has fans and homers. We should have our equivalents of flags and banners and vuvuzelas and all that other junk that you can wave or make noise with. Rather than trying to clamp off hype that seems rude and crude, we should be looking to for ways to include it as well, even if it needs to be segregated from the other fans in the same way as people at a soccer stadium.
Either support the hardworking TO, support the hardworking streamer, or shut the fuck up and watch your damn matches.

Streams should have a bot that automatically deletes the Twitch account of anyone who posts a “kappa” or “pogchamp.”

As I see it there are three issues:

Streamers wanting to get paid

Sheer logistics of having a chat with 10,000 people in it

People saying offensive things on the world’s view into your event

I feel like subscriber-only is primarily motivated by #2, but maybe I’m too idealistic.

For #1, I’m not sure what the answer is–I don’t think anyone is. Very few streamers make any money doing it, and I don’t think that’s a goal for most of them–they’d be happy to break even. It’d be nice if they could make money off of commercials (though people will cry about those too), but internet advertising isn’t what it was in 1998.
If you appreciate the stream you should support it–including with your wallet–but that doesn’t mean that streamers can or should be able to just put their hand out and expect your money. If the people who do subscribe to chat at majors are making it happen for the streamer, then they will keep on doing what they’re doing no matter how much you whine. But if it’s not working it just means that they have a failed “business model” (if they are, in fact, trying to run like a business) and it’s not the consumer’s fault.

Actually I think that’s a good solution to #s 2 and 3. You solve the thousands-of-people problem by having a bunch of channels. You solve the random racist/homophobic/whatever comments by disassociating yourself from the chat. And channels can deem themselves uncensored or family-friendly and moderate accordingly.
You can have #NJ_Watches_Evo and wisecrack with the guys you see at your local tournaments. You can have #Hakan_Players_Watch_Evo and have the channel blow up when a Hakan player comes on stream. You can have #SRK_Watches_Evo_Room_27 and chat with random people from the other side of the world. And you can even be in all three at the same time.
I go to tournaments all the time and would like to see a free chat. I don’t talk in it much but sometimes they give commentators material.

lol stream chat is not analogous to the arcade experience. its closer to the opposite of the arcade experience if anything.
I will support spooby.
How in the world can you carry on a conversation in a large stream filled with Kappas and BibleThumps?

I’ve had several conversations in the stream chat assuming it wasn’t marvel and/or had over 2.5k viewers.

People paying just so they can troll, meta trolling.

I’m quite fine with mitigating the amount of idiots that are crazy racists, trolling, etc out of the chat and I just have to pay $3 to join in the conversation.

$3 is not a lot of money, I mean fuck I just bought my Doritos Taco for the same amount of money.

I have better things to spend my $3 on.

HOW ABOUT YOU DIE IN A FIRE

Lol Wizard is troll editing now?

I’ve watched youtubes of tourneys, but I’ve never watched a Live FG stream.
IF and when I do watch one, I definitely wouldn’t care about chatting. I’d be too busy watching each match. I’d want to comment on that move or this move in order to ascertain knowledge of the set-up involved or frame data, etc. Instead of typing about it immediately, I’d be taking notes; writing down the times that certain moves I wanted to discuss occurred, so I could then inquire about/discuss them here, on 8WR, TYM, TZ, etc.
I wouldn’t have time to waste chatting. I hope I can just watch a stream and turn off or disable chat.
There are probably many who just like to watch, and have no interest in playing FGs. Organizing events and hosting streams cost money.
You don’t walk into Taco Bell, etc. and expect a free burrito or Doritos Tacos, etc. (coupons excluded) (can’t wait for different doritos flavored shells), just because you can drive/walk to one. You don’t get free internet service just because you bought/own a computer.
Hype, Swag, Dope, Fresh, etc. are all good, we all like to express how great something is, but the dopest, freshest, hypest, most-swag thing to do is be original, and to be a leader.
Trying to be the first one to say “PoGChamp” and having the top comment are just attention-seeking devices and all you’re doing is copying someone else. 20 years from now no one is going to care, (except you) that you had the top comment on the VF5:FS-Top-8 stream. Try to set positive goals outside of the internet, for this is where people will take note of you.
I definitely know I personally need to work on my game in general, getting together with people in RL and playing, supporting the growth of the genre in financial/artistic capacities, and watching Pro players/streams to learn strategies, amongst other FG “responsibilities.” These are the goals I have to fulfill for myself. None of them include hatred towards others. I don’t even hate you, I’m saying these things to encourage you to grow, just as I hope others would do for me if I acted like an "Ass, Jerk, etc."
Racism, Misogyny, Homophobia and intolerance do NOT belong anywhere, let alone in a “Community” of Fighting Gamers.
As several of the posters above have stated, if your focus is on irrelevant, negative and hateful chat, then you need to seriously re-evaluate your “interest” in Fighting Games, perhaps even seek therapy to deal with your anger issues.

There’s a lot of teenagers in the scene now. They’ve got no money and they’ll say anything.

I watched a live VF tourny from France the other week, streamed free in HD, and everyone off and on camera acted like the adults we all are. How hard can it be? Unfortunately in some of the bigger mainstream games, there will always be the unpleasant fools who try to spoil it for everyone else.

So how exactly does one report a bad thread to be closed? There’s not much discussion to be had anymore…

uhhh yeah

Whenever I see this thread I think of Cartman:

“Screw you guys, I’m going home.”
