I’m sure all you white folks who cant grasp whats so offensive about this make sugarless kool-aid to go with their caviar on wheat thins and rare hamburgers with the blood dripping on the plate.
I get why it’s offensive- it’s a fucking stereotype. What makes it so funny to me is that the school that put that on the menu to honor Black History Month are fucking idiots.
I don’t know, maybe I’m insensitive, but I think racist jokes are funny as hell. Dave Chappell is one of the funniest motherfuckers on the planet. Yes, I’m white. Yes, I have a three-inch dicc. But just because I laugh at the jokes doesn’t mean I believe any single race, religion, ethnicity, or gender is superior than another. Hell, I main Balrog! And I’m not going to sit here and try to justify why I think racist shit is funny, especially here on SRK where everyone refers to each other as “nigga” and talks about having Asian wives and shit. It just is.
And for the record, I put tons of sugar in my Kool-aid and I eat the shit out of some fried chicken.
Does that mean if it’s Asian month you can’t serve rice because Asians traditionally eat rice? If you’re celebrating Japan you can’t ever have any sushi? No Mexican food when studying Mexico?
Most cultures have certain foods they enjoy and are known for.
It is always dangerous to make the standard that something is offensive to a specific person at a specific time. I’m not a fan of the N-word, but that’s precisely what happened with that word. My black friends all hate it and don’t want you to use that word at all, but then you have people throw it around all the time and now in the media athletes insist they can use that word whenever they want, but then also they can get angry if they want. Richie Incongnito is white but apparently it’s okay for him to use that word. I can’t imagine President Obama ever using that word however, and of course he is black.
So what food is considered okay to be associated with black people? Can other races be offended? Say taco day, should that be cancelled because it would be offensive to Mexicans? Maybe we should just get rid of all food, and only soylent gets served in public. Then the rest of us are required to hide and eat in our homes so we don’t risk offending someone.
It’s courageous and inspiring to see that cute little ghost-type Pokemon try and bridge a sensitive ethno-culinary divide by covering his watermelon in mayonnaise.
Seeing that kind of positive message appear in children’s entertainment really warms the cockles of my heart!

One correction, black people stealing live chickens was a stereotype at one time. The dice rolling stereotype is something that’s been around since like the 40s/50s.
It’s not about picking the correct food to celebrate a culture, or being afraid to be politically incorrect. It’s an issue of how people are still ignorant of the historical context of a stereotype and how a school perpetuates subtle racism instead of really educating the kids.
Here, these might be better examples for you…
-Asian American month: Sushi and dim sum, while getting your laundry and nails done. All classes are math classes that day.
-Latino month: Taco trucks stop by. For recess, guys clean up the school and girls get a little baby doll to take care. Front of the school made to look like Home Depot. PE you hop fences.
-Middle Eastern month: I think they share the month with Asian Americans, but fuck it. Curry and Halal for lunch. Oh and slurpees, kids love slurpees. Scheduled on September 12th.
-Gay pride month: Corn dogs and fish sticks. Wait, they already serve this?! Damn liberals pushing their culture on us.
But all they did was serve food. Your Middle Eastern one doesn’t even make sense, curry is a South Asian and East Asian food, and Halal isn’t even a type of dish.
In all seriousness, how do you not see the difference between serving a food and those other acts you mentioned? Those things you listed are just mindlessly hateful for the most part, you’d have to go out of your way to honestly believe that isn’t offensive.
Let’s go through it one by one.
Asian American month: Sushi, dim sum, dumpling, fried race. We had all this stuff for Asian celebration back in grade school. Nobody thought it was racist, a couple of the Asian kid’s mothers actually brought in the stuff/cooked it for us.
Latin month: Burritos, tacos, enchiladas, some soups, and sombreros and other cool stuff. Again none of it was considered racist, we actually had this stuff at school.
Middle Eastern: We never had a day on this. All I remember was after 9/11 when people were just outright racist, far worse than serving fried chicken. It’s cooled off now, but you’d have to have lived under a rock since 9/11 to actually think serving fried chicken compared to the stuff that happened not so long ago.
Gay pride: People dress up in really stereotypical gay clothing and then go on parades. Rainbow colors, effeminate manners of speaking, people do this on parade, and not only is it not considered racist, it’s celebrated.
The way you whined will cause a lot more stereotyping than what you’re complaining about. You basically showed every single “race card” complaint people have against black people. Even if you are correct, you need to work on how you present your points and thoughts. Trying to offend a bunch of other races isn’t going to make anybody side with you, in fact all it will do is make people from all those races turn around and say “you know what? fuck these whiny black people” and come up with their own insults. You’ve got to break that cycle if you truly see problems and truly care.
Me personally, I don’t give a shit. The only reason I wouldn’t serve that stuff is because I don’t want to even deal with any problems at all. I know some people are offended so I would just avoid the situation entirely. But that doesn’t mean I believe it’s a “stereotype” or racist in any way, frankly I think that assertion is absurd if that’s all you can write to support it.
I was just making a joke that if you’re questioning whether a food is or isn’t offensive, then you’re missing the point. Getting hung up on the food is like debating the “truth” in all those racist school activities. People are getting offended because of the racial implications of the stereotype. Just like you personally would on a “cultural education day” that lumped all ME/SE Asians together and subtly (or not) painted them as and Muslims. Others have already posted the historical context of the chicken and watermelon stereotype. Anyone who already knew about it knows it’s understandable to be upset at the school’s ignorance. Everyone else just shrugs their shoulders and moves along. Same old shit.
