I never read it and I understood what was going on. May be I was missing some key background story from the manga, but if so, i never noticed.
it effected me that I didn’t want to watch the anime since I already polished off the entire manga. I’ve heard the ending is altered slightly, and that’s pretty much it.
if you have time to burn, definitely read 20th century boys. It’s so insane it’s good.

First half of Death note is the best, second half in the maga is weak, but in the anime is decent, they did a couple of things to keep your interest more. The whole series is worth a watch.

Amazingly enough all the major characters are intact, with their stories almost the same. The visual style is like nothing you’ve ever seen before though.
