I think you guys go a little ham on ric in the first place. And it rewards his attention seeking behavior so therefore he acts out again. If everybody ignores his bullshit he has nothing. I’d be pissed too if I was banned from every event despite the fact he never really did anything bad in person at an event. I think the dude should be perm-banned from SRK. That eliminates his online persona complex. Banning him in advance is kind of a shitty thing to do. I’ll go ahead and say that he is allowed at any of my future events, he will be permitted to play, and if he acts out I’m sure there are more then a few ways we could deal with the situation. Removing somebody from a venue really isn’t that difficult. I mean, we’re just playing video games. You ain’t gonna like everybody at an event, but the reality is it’s only like one day. You don’t have to deal with him after that. If you want to ban him from your casuals nights do it. But don’t ban the dude from competing in the actual tournament. Our player base is tiny, and to start cutting people because of that isn’t wise.
So there shouldn’t be real repercussions for the things one says on the internet? The fact that he hasn’t actually followed through on any of his threats is irrelevant. What he’s said would be enough for people to get restraining orders against him, AT LEAST.
The small player base is precisely the reason he NEEDS to be cut off from the scene. By not allowing him to attend, more people are going to show up. That’s a fact. If your goal is attendance, cutting off one and gaining much more than one is just simple math.
Also worth noting that the reason sask fighting game scene has had such difficulty in recent years is largely due to him (Other factors present, of course). Immagine how many people saw a local matchmaking thread and then were completely turned off from getting together with people due solely to him. I for one, would never attend any event I knew he would be at. No one here has any real chance of becoming a pro, so this is largely about making friends and having fun. I wouldn’t want to spend my time in the same room with someone like that, and many others feel the same.
Finally, removing Ric completely from the scene is not only the best thing for the scene, but the best thing for Ric. Its clear that the guy has some serious mental issues that are brought out by these things. We can only hope that after being completely cut off, he finds other things to do and stops being such a waste.
burzy i agree that ignoring him is the best course of action. i’ve been doing that myself since he returned for the most part(except for impossible to resist jabs), as have most people
that said, i’m still very glad that he won’t be attending any ccg events, because i truly believe he has some screws loose, and am not sure what he would do. usually when people are just trolling on the internet, they can get a little carried away, but in my experience at some point it levels out. in the case of ric, he has so obsessively focused on playing this role of some guy who was wronged, and the world(cgy) is ganging up on him, that its spilled over to real life. one look at his facebook or youtube page tells you that he truly believes all of the shit he posts
also the constant projecting about how we’re a bunch of jobless losers(funny, considering that nearly(maybe everyone?) everyone is full time employed, and some of us, including myself, are in the process of buying a house) is one thing, but the venom that he puts into his posts tells you that he’s being genuine. the fact that he can’t comprehend why we use the forum as a forum to talk to eachother is genuine.
this is the last “serious” post i’m going to make about the guy in regards to this. but i definitely think ignoring him when he eventually comes back under a different username is the best course of action
Now that the thread’s probably going to cool down I’ll ask, anyone know if there’s any SF’y stuff that goes down at UoR?
I actually did try to ignore him for the most part this time. I think he had an account made for a good two weeks without me responding to anything he said, even in that debacle of a BC thread. Eventually it just becomes too hard to ignore, especially when you’re bored at work.
It just becomes a bit too personal. He starts flagging all the posts in the Calgary thread as spam/abuse, even though we haven’t mentioned his name in there for months. He is jealous (or something) of the friendships we’ve made so he starts hurling insults and crazy rumors about us that he probably believes are actually true.
I do feel genuinely bad for him, and sometimes I’m embarrassed for getting roped into replying when I should just leave it alone. But like foger I’m glad he’s still banned from CCG events, because most of us are in this for the friendships and good times, and having Ric around there would put eggshells over the floor, even if he never followed through on any of the (many) crazy threats he’s made.
I wish I could understand what Ric wants out of the scene. He’s gone on record saying he hates SF4, he doesn’t play Marvel or any other game, and he doesn’t get along with anyone so he’s not in it for the friendships. Why does he hang around if he doesn’t play the games, and doesn’t like the people?
Like I said. Tournaments are how we decide who our best players are. Enjoy the “scene” during casuals but if we’re ever going to get any better we shouldn’t be banning players. He doesn’t have to come to your casual meetups to compete in a tournament. He’s missed four majors if I’ve counted correctly. “no repercussions” But lets look at it like this. In real life; we act like adults and sometimes there are people you don’t like. You ignore them and move on with your day. You don’t just ban people because you don’t like the way they think. If you don’t want to be around people, don’t be around people, but I think it would be silly to start banning players. Regardless of whether it’s your best player or worst player.
I’ve seen engineering students playing SF4. I don’t really see a place where people typically chill and play but if you wanna get something going I’ll be back in the fall and happy to thjink about that.
Finally, I need new comp. Add me, burzy306 on xbl
it gets to a certain point where it is too much to ignore. just because I’m an adult doesn’t mean I have to put up with his insane bullshit.
once he starts putting it out there that CCG are all criminals, I’m a rapist, we all have no jobs etc. it is time to put him away
i typed out this long post but remembered that its better to not speak of it anymore
all i’ll say is that we differ in philosophy. there comes to be a point where a ban in this case is like getting a restraining order for your psycho ex who is obsessed with you and you dont know what they might be capable of. at some point that is more important than who is better at video games
You think he’s been banned for ‘the way he thinks’? You have a seriously skewed perception about what’s gone on. Based on the things he’s said, the reality of him showing up somewhere and causing trouble/fights/something much worse is AT LEAST plausible. Hell, he’s promised it would happen. You’re very mistaken about why people feel the way they do about this guy. Its definitely not as simple as a different mindset, or dislike.
If he’d made the kind of threats directed at evo staff that he has to CCG and Saskatoon, he would be banned from all Evo tournaments instantly, I guarantee it. We aren’t weird, or unreasonable for not wanting him around.
He is already banned from Evo though. At least according to MR Wizard on facebook.
…seriously? Then why in the world are people trying to justify his presence anywhere? He’s banned from the biggest FG organization in Canada and he’s banned from the biggest FG tournament in the world, and the only tournaments that really matter. Even if he was good at the game, it wouldn’t matter at all.
I don’t suppose you could link/ss that post.
I personally don’t understand the whole “well he is good at the game, so I guess we should support that behavior by allowing him to attend events” mentality.
He wasn’t good. He was okay.
The only videos I can find of him are him getting absolutely demolished by players who are actually good. There’s a set of him playing Jwong, which he apparently paid for, that shows he really isn’t very good. He’s very random, in a game and with a character that allows you to be very random, while still being safe. He’d be even worse with any other character. He can’t really seem to grasp the concept of an OS, or even a setup, both of which are key components to the game.
Oh, and him getting DP’d by Jozhear.
Like Tyler mentioned, he’s now PMing me on "Danx"
Ban that account too.
I’ve had this conversation with him in the past, when he wasn’t at maximum troll. I asked him why he thinks he’s so good when he doesn’t OS anything (a concept even mediocre players do regularly), and why he doesn’t do Fei’s crazy-good ambiguous setups after back throw and stuff, and he said something to the effect of “I’d rather not risk it, I’d rather play the neutral game because I’m stronger there than risk getting hit”. He doesn’t understand that these setups are designed to be fully reversal-proof and OSes are almost never a risk. They’re just things you do with your character if you want to win.
I tried to follow up on that but then he questioned my skill at the game and on what authority I had to tell him he was playing the wrong way. That’s when I gave up.
From what I’ve seen of him play in the neutral game, he’s just an average-ish Fei player. Sometimes presses good buttons, other times goes weird with HP rekkas and chicken wings.
I know he’s not here anymore to defend himself (and he’s definitely reading this), so it’s not fair for me to slam him too much. I’ve certainly see worse players, but he’s made a deliberate decision to not use all of his character’s best tools, so his skill cap is limited. I’d definitely feel confident putting money on him winning 2 or fewer games against Jozhear in a FT10 if played today. Jamie has leveled up quite a bit since they last played, particularly in the Fei match (which Vega wins).
I completely agree.
He should be banned from SRK for life. No coming back.
And I also don’t believe that Ric’s attendance would drop attendance by 50% either way, if one person is going to affect your attendance I’m pretty sure you won’t be missed as far as attendance goes. We already have low attendance; it doesn’t really matter whether ric shows up or not. I don’t even know who you are or if you’ve even attended anything in the first place. My point being, is that dude took the drive to get here and not even play in the tournament. My first tourney, he drove up to play post tournament casuals. Regardless of what his reasons were for doing that, it’s obvious that the dude does care about improving the scene whether the people that hate him want to believe it or not.
in a surprise turn of events, it’s likely I’ll be at the HT thing thursday.
There’s a lot of weak reasoning and self-contradicting here.
