If Gamelords is the place to be, then I’m down for some 2-D fun… just gotta make sure people are definitely going to be there at so-and-so date and time so I don’t waste hella gas and money to play no one. Not too many third strike players showed up on saturday nights when I went to Golden Token in its heyday, I just assumed weekends were best for at least a few people because I couldn’t go on thursdays.

Yes, the only way we would all be able to play is under like 3 conditions, have a session at someones house or play at gamelords, but there are some people who do want arcade and its all good, Nickle City. I miss GTA, that shit was sit down and there was hella good comp, I learned a lot over there, shit. But know the only people to play is my one friend who wants to learn and hell my lil sister, my yun looks like K.O. and my Ken is like Daigo to them, I aint gonna get better like that.
But if you do have tournies at Nickle I dont mind driving or a carpool.
And Tilt at plaza might get 3s cause as they tell me thats a hard game to find these days.
Make the SD 3s scene big and pretty much it comes down to us, so lets do this, leyrooooooooooo jenkins
i think one of the problems is that video games are a young man’s game. i mean, i have about 1-2 hours a week to devote to playing fighting games, thats it. i don’t even have the time to go to an arcade due to work, life, my gf, poker…and if i did devote myself to it, for what end? to be very good at a game thats dying anyways? sad, but true, the 2d scene is dying quickly. especially here in america. we are a nation of people who rushed out to get the xbox360 in spite of the fact that it is glitchy and has like 3 games out for it…it doesn’t matter about quality, just flashiness. 3d games have flashiness. they are eye candy. while these things have very little bearing on serious players like you guys, it does matter to bovine america, and they really decide whats selling. its like the show arrested devlopment. its hands down, the best comedy on tv right now. most intelligent, best written, best acted - everything, yet its going to be cancelled cuz bovine america is not buying…your choices are either - start getting together on the regular or start playing 3d…but accept the eventuality of the scene’s death…
angryliberal: its true that the scene is dying, but mabey in san diego where we dont have a arcade to play anymore, but its still hanging on by a thread in other places up in l.a. FFA, where a lot of the top players play(vic ly, pyrolee, 5star,ect.) but you dont have to say it will die. Just have to give it some time. Of course its big in Japan cause they go great arcades also super great players and they have reasons for playing, lol.
The MvC2 scene is pretty nice also the Tekken scene, only one im worried about is 3s, but something will come up, hopefully.
Also, I understand how you dont have time to play cause of work and other things you got to do, so thats cool.

don’t get me wrong, i love 3s and cvs2. i would rather play 2d fighetrs all day long, but there is an issue of fresheness…there is only so much you can do with 3s before its all figured out. like mvc2 - i doubt theres alot of advancements in strats for mvc2 anymore, whats left now is getting better and faster at execution, vs figuring out new exploits, new strats…we need something new to reinvigorate the scene and give people a new math problem to work on basically…but like i said, i’m not a competitive player. i went down to gamelords one time, got my ass handed to me by gene on cvs2, got my ass handed to me by everyone i played at 3s and pretty much felt like a little kid trying to play professional football…its a little frustrating to be as unskilled as myself playing kids 12 years my junior and having them own me so hard i barely moved the stick…i just don’t have the time to figure and master all that shit and thus will always be the kid whose just playin for fun…so mayeb i have a skewed perception of the 2d scene…
I disagree about freshness …to an extent, but you pretty much stated what I was going to say with MvC2… there are still new strats to figure out, etc. As a player who’s had the privilege to visit Family Fun Arcade, I can say that while the game has been out forever there’s always fun to be had, always a new guessing game in your favor to discover, new techniques to bait and trap, all that good stuff. The scene will die eventually, but the job for us with enough time is to keep it alive as long as possible.
Yes, time is definitely a huge issue with that, but it’s probably your only issue if you have a genuine interest in learning. I remember playing someone named Ray (not sure if it’s the same ray that posts here) for the first time at Regency Fun Center a while back and he gave me trouble. One of the other players told me that as of that moment he had only been playing for less than a month, and I was amazed at how much progress he could make in such a short time, being capable enough to place decently in a tournament. I don’t know how much time he was able to devote to learning, but he’s proof that it’s possible to develop solid skill for the game and compete with players who have been at it for years without having to spend years as well.
Your current situation doesn’t allow for that, obviously, but my point is that if you ever find yourself with enough time to learn, you won’t have a hopeless uphill battle ahead of you, and there will definitely be someone with the patience to teach you.
3d is alive because there’s relatively new games (tekken 5, sc3) and because markman has done a great job leading the community.
but i digress, instead of talking about what makes the 3d scene is so successful we should concentrate on developing the 2d scene. we should just start playing weekly or even biweekly… hell, most of the time when i went to gamelords, i showed up to play tekken but ended up playing cvs2, 3S, and HSF2 the entire time. the arcade i usually go to, arcade infinity, a 3S scene popped up simply because people showed up every friday and saturday to play. it’s not even about getting everyone to be better or being best friends in the community but just having fun playing a game.
the best place to start would be finding a place to meet, whether it be nickel, gamelords, or someone’s house, as cody said… and it looks like you guys are hitting up GL this week. i’d offer my house since the living room is always empty and the roommates don’t care, but i have a really small 13" tv and i don’t have the game yet =P plus school is over, so i’m headed back to LA over the next 4 weeks, but i’d definitely like to make something happen in SD.
the 3s scene is still really big in some places. (ffa, svgl, toronto) i dont think san diego will ever get close to as big as these places, but at least we can have a group of 3s players that can get together and play.
i just think we all need to make more of an effort. I personally thought gta sucked, and there was only one time where there was more than 3 people playing 3s. every time i was at gta, people would play me once, then play marvel. or yi would show up and everyone would leave. that shit is weak.
all i have to say, is 3s this weekend at gamelords, or wherever. ill offer my house too, but i dont even have a console to play it on.

i usually go friday or saturday, depends how i’m feeling and how much money i have =P since they have KOF XI i’m probably gonna hit it up more lately. but the 3S scene is quite healthy there, which is amazing since i remember when it was just a machine in the back, now it draws crowds like mad.

The comp at AI is decent from what I remember. The best people there were those 2 asian guys who were friends, never play each other, and often switch off.
