So our reasons are actually the same? (except the specific bit with slash/bust, which is taste) They obviously cut a lot of corners on 5, and as you said, that’s a major reason it’s bad.
It was just so obviously bad from the start that I gave up before other things even became clear. Sometimes fifteen minutes is long enough to know a game is terrible.
Edit: And this is a nice friendly thread, even with differences of opinion. No need to get all internetty about it.
samurai shodown can never be forgotten, especially since they continued to misspell “showdown” since it’s inception. my favorite was the first game. ss2 was pretty good and 5sp was too. i even got into 6 a bit. ss sen was ok. seems very unfinished to me and rushed out the door but it could have been a lot better. the first 3D samsho was pretty cool outside of those nakaruru infinites. i hope they end up making another samsho someday even though sen failed hard but SNK just finally got their act straight with kof13 so who knows.
Seriously about 5 SP, I played it some but not that much. Look/feel are actually really important to me, and SP just didn’t do it to me (6 didn’t either, but it was kind of closer).
Maybe I cared too much about 4, which for its issues is still my favorite fighting game ever (and I’ve been playing 'em since the start), so the differences from 4-5 just bugged me, I dunno.
Between those differences and the fact that 5 vanilla was really just terrible, its just not there for me. So let me rewrite ‘I just can’t buy that its good’ to ‘I just can’t get into it’, it might well be the best of the series, I just can’t do it
I'll cop to being a Samsho fanboy tho', I've bought (and still own) just about every version and game it was possible to get, including the Nakoruru game (MASSIVE waste of money btw, I'm not too good at Japanese, and visual novels are the death of gaming)
Seriously dude just download the uncensored version of V SP and go on GGPO and play people on there. There’s always at least 5-10 people on there around mid day or afternoon. Play the fucking game against another human being before you dismiss it.
Nobody really played it, it was really obscure even in Japan where they try pretty much everything.
The old versions had no damage scaling and if you tried to play the game like Street Fighter it was really slow and clunky.
My personal favorite is Samurai Shodown V Special. It was gory, had an enormous cast and improved on the systems in 4.
But since noone played it, I had a hard time finding someone on GGPO that was on my beginner level.
I checked and you never gave a reason why. I can understand hating V but V SP is one of the best games in the series, it’s on par with 2 and 6. If anything I’m baiting you to check out this awesome shit and report back.
I mean I don’t like the specific subsystems they added for 5, and I don’t like the visual design of the characters they added to replace the bust versions (except Rera, she’s okay). Beyond that Bust (Murasaki in 6) Galford I found really fun to play, and he didn’t make the cut…
But really, none of those things are that important, except that I just ended up not terribly motivated to play it.
BUT! I can't not take your challenge :p I'm gonna go download a ROM and take another look at it, I'll probably be less judgemental than I was back then :D
I really need to find something to play with people anyways, I'm kind of in between games right now.
Sadly, this seems to be pretty much the treatment the series has gotten since SS3. They were CLEARLY on a yearly release schedule for a while, and the games suffered for it, IMHO.
SS2 is in my top 5 favorite fighters ever - and if it ever got a nice rebalancing treatment ala KOF 98UM/2002UM or even HD Remix, it just might jump up to number 1. All it needs is a bit of balance tweaking and easier controls and it’s perfect.
With the older games, part of that is just ‘90s quality’. They didn’t pay attention the way developers have to now to make sure everything worked, they just kind of shoveled the games out there.
I don’t think designers had any idea that players would end up breaking games to the level they are now.
Sure, but it doesn’t take much to determine that some characters in SS3 could easily do devastating amounts of damage while others were basically armed with blunt spoons.
Ironically I found my SS cartridge for Genesis during my recent move, for nostalgic purposes it was pretty fun but the lack of an arcade stick hurts the game IMO.
I’m only 22 so I wouldn’t know the answer but was there ever a pretty decent tournament efforts besides assumed casuals? The series has always been clandestine and I can’t to find the extent of it’s nationwide (international, maybe?) exposure.
I wish they would port SS6 to XBLA/PSN. I still play 2 here and there, but nobody is online to play (I suck anyways, but, haha). I still bust out the PS2 to play the anthology as well. I really like the darker style of the art in SS3/4.
Sen was SO disappointing. I wish SNK had a plan or is planning something to bring Shodown back in the near future. I love the series.
Is there a reason why 5SP and especially 2 are regarded so well? I’ve never played the SamSho games aside from like 5 minutes in MAME. Would like to learn though, any good place to look up strats and stuff?
Many confuse the 3D Hyper Neo Geo 64 and PSX games. Samurai Shodown 64 is just titled Samurai Spirits in Japan. Samurai Shodown 64 Warrior’s rage is titled Samurai Spirits 2 Asura Zanmaden in Japan. Finally Samurai Shodown Warrior’s Rage is titled Kenkyaku Ibunroku Yomigaerishi Soukou no Yaiba Samurai Spirits Shinsou. Holy Crap that is long. I go by the Japanese titles as there is less confusion.
I really hope that SNKP release Samurai Spirits Zero Special on PSN soon, that game is soooo good.
