Samurai Shodown Anthology

There is no point in complaining about graphical glitches of ports of games which have their arcade versions perfectly emulated already

No SS 64 huh has that ever been released for anything except the Neo geo & arcade?

It only came out on the arcade. The home NeoGeo was basically the MVS with a different cart pinout while SS64 ran on the Hyper Neo Geo 64 which was a totally different system (and a bitch to work on I may add).

SS Anthology is collection of 2D titles of serie (and its not full considering SS5 Special is not in)

3D titles are:
-SS64 - only on HNG64 arcade, unemulated
-SS Asura Zanmaden - only on HNG64 arcade, unemulated
-SS Shinsho - on PSX only, can be emulated w/ netplay but 99% of cast are new faces because storyline-wise it has 20 years gap with main series (kinda like Garou with KOF/FF)
-SS Sen - TaitoX2 arcades, will hit PS3 and XBOX360 this summer.

So out of all of these Samurai Shodowns, which one is the most popular in terms of competition? Like, if you had to pick ONE Samurai Shodown to hold a tournament for, which would be the most popular among the Samurai Shodown community?

I heard SS2 was the shit, but I wasn’t sure if that was in terms of competition or “back in the day” nostalgia. SS6 would’ve been my first guess, but like I said, I dunno squat.

I’m just wondering what the most tournament-heavy Samurai Shodown is.

Currently on 2dfighter.com the most popular samurai shodown game is SS4. Go here
http://2dfighter.com/games/
and look Top 10 games

Out of most popular 2D ones (SS2, SS4, SS5sp), SS4 is the hardest to learn because of sheer amount of unintended features in game that one should learn to be efficient. Also its engine allows big combos but often these too require skill and good timing.

Other two games, SS2 is just simple plug-&-play game with lots of nostalgia factor for US players I guess. SS5sp is most balanced and has biggest cast among the three, gameplay is more about tactics and brainstorming the opponent (each thing has a counter to it, kinda like VF) than combo skill like in SS4

About SS6, well let it first get online then we will talk (atomiswave emu). But engine there is completely different and feels different from other SS games

Thanks for the info. I guess SS4 takes it, at least until SS6 gets some more coverage.

Other than emulation, SS5sp is only available on PAL PS2, right? I was thinking about ordering it.

I was also wondering if I should order Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuden, which from what I hear is basically SS6. But I figured maybe it would have something that SS6 in the Anthology doesn’t have. Extra content? Better port? Better sound? Progressive Scan? I don’t suppose any of you own it?

I appreciate the help.

Last I checked, SST= SS6. PS2 port has extra characters and Spirits/ISMS/Grooves. I believe both the JPN and SSA versions are identical.

SS0S/SS5Sp is only available on MVS/AES. It’s never been ported to any other system.

As for tournaments, I think you’re going to have to qualify what you mean by “Samurai Shodown community”. Specifically, what area are we talking about here?

It’s the whole reason i ordered the Anthology pack. Playing this game back in the '90s killed a lot of my time (and actually resulted in some fights in the local arcades! damn, i’m getting old…)

I’m glad these ‘anthology’ discs are being made. i loved the capcom anthology sets and the genesis one as well

Me and my guys in VA are just setting up a bunch of tournaments, and Samurai Shodown Anthology is among them. However, we’re trying to get some input on which Samurai Shodown has been considered the most “tournament-worthy” to this day, because we’re only picking one. It’s nothing huge, but we’d like to know.

Thanks for all of the info, guys.

Has there been any word as to when Samurai Shodown Sen is coming out on console?

Without emulation SS5sp is avialable only on Neo-Geo as I remember, but it will be mostly censored anyway, plus you get no netplay.

Japanese SS6 version
-95% of text is in japanese including movelists, dialogs, endings, survival mode missions and create-a-spirit mode
-Only shitty and super shitty character voices (if you dont know, SNK got new very bad voice actors to voice most of characters because they could save more $ this way)
-all hidden characters and all endings are locked

SSA SS6 version
-Everything in english
-25 characters were revoiced by old voice actors, so Genjuro stopped sounding like a skinny nerd sitting in toilet. You can select re-dubbed voices via “Arrange Voices” option, and you can select old SS6 voices via “Original Voices” option
-All characters and endings are unlocked from the start. You still would need to play through arcade mode to see your character’s storyline dialogues for your ending to make sence though

Samurai Spirits Sen will be released this summer for PS3 and XBOX360 as I remember. There also are rumors that it will be XBOX360 exclusive

Yeah Ignition announced PS3 and 360 ports of SS Sen/EoD for the summer of 09.

Recently, however, SNK had that display thing going on at the Microsoft conference and it seems in Japan it is only confirmed for 360.

:smokin: I laughed loud at that. Yeah, they’re hit and miss. I think Galford’s voice is ok.

I think most of revoices are ok, but Amakusa, Sieger and Suija actually started to sound worser than in original SS6 voice pack

Why not ask the people who are going to attend, since it will affect them directly?

Out of the bunch in SSA, I think SS6 is probably the best tournament game. SS2 is probably the best SS game, but there’s a strong possibility its tournaments would devolve to all Ukyo, all the time. SS4 is decent, but once you start climbing the ranks, the stupidity factor rises incredibly. SS6 has it’s own set of stupid shit, but I think it takes longer for the garbage to appear.

Nevertheless, as I said, I think you should just ask your community. Either that or just run whatever you want. The SS community as a whole (outside of Asia?) isn’t big enough or important to warrant any kind of deference in a tournament you want to run. I’d stay the fuck away from SS1 and SS3 (and SS5 though I love SS5 because broken Yoshi is awesome) , but treally: It’s your decision.

Just a random question, what is SS Sen? And will that be hitting the US 360/PS3 or is it staying in Japanese?

Yes stay away from SS1/3/5 and play their enhanced counterparts (SS2/4/5sp), well and try SS6 too.

SS:Sen is latest 11th installment of fighting games in Samurai Shodown franchise, and fourth of its 3D installments. It was released in spring of 2008 in japanese arcades. Graphics/sound are top notch, however gameplay doesnt have much in common with other Samurai Shodown games, as long-range combat isnt present, and most of special moves are simple weapon swings or punches (no magic, nothing too interesting, I guess they wanted to go for realism). Game has no weapon-flipping moves, and to that point no super moves at all. It features elements from Soul Calibur (control scheme and horisontal/vertical slash differentiation) and Tekken (pretty long juggles). Half of characters are brand new, because of that and gameplay some hardcore fans say that it should be characterized as new game with Samurai Shodown characters slapped in to promote it. Oh yes, all demonic/magical stuff was abandoned from storyline, and main bad guys are americans and are fought in America. Sub-boss is a cowboy who fires at you unblockable bullets from his shotgun, and boss looks like some dragoon with rapier. Endings are text-based like in SS3, and there is like 3 short cutscenes during walkthrough, that look almost same for all characters (scene where Angelica goes to fight player, talk with sub-boss, talk with boss)

Japanese version is censored, overseas versions (like USA one) are uncensored (blood and gruesome dismemberments are in)

How is Sen doing in Japan? It gets any competition at all? Any tourney for it?
