Saikyo-ryuu for Dummies: Dan Video Thread!

So there are instances where “tsu” is read and pronounced as “zu”? What’s the difference between ? and ? besides using the “su” and “tsu” kana? I’ve never heard “zu” actually drop the ‘u’ sound before, but in Seichuusen Godanzuki it really sounds like the ‘u’ is dropped… x_x?

For the longest time I prounounced it rai-yuu, before I got interested in Japanese :stuck_out_tongue: I know it’s meant to be pronounced ryu-u but I find it physically hard to pronounce correctly :stuck_out_tongue:

Ryu-u, Ri-yu, Ri-yu-u and Ryu are all different, I know that much :stuck_out_tongue:

Also “shoryuken” looks better written than “shouyruuken” etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, rendaku can change ? to ?, as in ???); ? to ?, as in ???; ? to ?, as in ??? to ?, as in??? to ?, ? to ?, etc.

The pronunciation of ? and ? are identical; they’re just written differently.

In modern Japanese, ‘u’ sounds get devoiced sometimes, especially if they’re at the end of the word. e.g. ?? is usually pronounced des, instead of desu. It doesn’t sound like Makoto in SSFIV devoices the ‘u’ in Godanzuki, though.

I kind of dragged us off topic.

To put us back on topic, here’s an old video of me doing stupid shit against a Dictator:

ft5 for 5bucks money match between myself and an old school Ryu player that goes by the name of Frank Fresh. GGs!

That was the most Saikyo way to earn 5 bucks I’ve ever seen! Good job!

Lol thanks. Frank plays in a really SF2 way so its different than some Ryu players. It was a hard match for me, plus on PS3 there is slight lag to me and I’m always nervous offline

His style was far from SF2.

You really need to play stronger opponents. You are running the same shit over and over again, getting very predictable. There was a couple of times were your offense was clearly blocked yet you still went for the DP.

Getting a knockdown and doing knee to cross over is NOT a good mixup. Of course he is going to press something, you can’t do shit about it. You don’t have a 3f normal (yet) to do afterwards, you are pretty much at a disadvantage again. You would be better off getting the knockdown and trying to push your opponent back in the corner again.

There is also other ways to keep your opponent cornered then using knee and EX tatsu over and over again. You should be ticking into knee from c.jab/c.short and trying to bait a counter hit, mix it up with s.strong x knee strings to actually apply a mixup. S.fwd to stop them from neutral jumping. Or if they block the knee from a c.short/jab do c.strong into jab fireball because you are at a frame advantage (or 0) afterwards.

I could go on but im really tired.

P.S. STOP JUMPING SO MUCH!!!

in franks defense, he pretty much only plays SF2 and thats his main game.

I play better people…I just lose hard lol.

Yeah, I also noticed this mid game. Sometimes I would try to do the cross over knee then a dragon punch or grab right after, but it never came out. I was trying to take advantage of the fact that he would throw out a normal.

See actually I didnt know how to beat out reversals, so I just went to s.strong x knee pretty much everytime. I also didnt know st.foward stops them from neutral jumping. thats like a godsend now that I know it, because it was a main way ppl got out of my offense.
about the blocked knee into c.strong into fireball, why not just do st.strong into knee again?

I appreciate it man. Im really not very good but there hasnt been anyone who knows about Dan to tell me otherwise.

That stems from my lack of confidence in my anti airing. I’m always afraid they are gonna jump in and I wont be able to dp so I get lazy and jump in myself. Also, like I said before, I mess up a lot of execution on ps3 and im nervous offline.

booty clapper I think you’re a bit too hard on PKSkyler. I thought he played rather well; quite solid, but yes there were a lot of the same stuff going on over and over again. What bugs me the most is the cMK -> EX Dankuukyaku. Yes, it’s a very good combo and it’s mostly safe on block, but is it THAT good so it’s justified to use it, like, always? I think that some of the times it’s actually a waste of meter and you can apply a better mixup game with other stuff, cMK -> M Dankuukyaku for example. I saw you doing cMK -> H Dankuukyaku a couple of times, which mostly works rather well in the beginning, but after a while you notice it can be really risky - the opponent gets used to it and jumps backwards and kicks to punish it. Sometimes that works on your M Dankuukyaku as well, but it’s much more safe i.m.o. and can take the opponent off guard since he’s unused to the medium version, and sometimes facilitates a succeeded throw for you afterwards. If he doesn’t jump back that is. Although… He can neutral jump. That’s not good.

Another thing I thought about, aren’t you doing the L Dankuukyaku a bit too early at Franks wake ups? I mean, after a while when he’s gotten used to being prepared for pressure, he can buffer (EX?) Shouryuukens and beat you of out it since he sees you doing it so early. I usually wait until later to do it, and I feel it mostly works quite well. Or were they all intended meaties that failed?

Also, I noticed that when you punished him in the corner with Kouryuuken -> FADC -> nj.MP, you got caught in a throw afterwards. How did that happen? YOU should be expecting him to throw/crouch tech and counter with a H Dankuukyaku, or a light one if that feels better (but usually not so good against Ryu since L Dankuukyaku frequently whiffs if he’s crouching) ,… or, if it feels risky, get safe with a backdash and do a new Dankuukyaku or something, but don’t forget to anticipate him to do Shouryuuken, and thus maybe delay the eventual Dankuukyaku slightly.

Also, what about all the random DPs, wasn’t there a bit too much of them? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You should start taking use of Dan’s godlike f.sLK. After you’ve hit with a blocked L Dankuukyaku, cMK isn’t always the best answer; mix up your opponent with a f.sLK sometimes instead, maybe two of them, maybe a f.sMK, and then do a Dankuukyaku. Of course this is just suggestions, you know there are other alternatives too like anticipate him focusing your next move and counter that with your own focus attack et.c. (which I saw you doing at one point). And as booty clapper said you should make use of cLP/cLK Dankuukyaku too. Not because they’re generally better but to have a more varied mixup game.

Lastly… I actually have more than this to say, but where is Dan’s longer combos!? To me, using cMK -> EX Dankuukyaku as a “max damage combo” most of the time is so unimpressive and really unnecessary. I saw very few c.sMP -> Dankuukyaku or cs.HP -> Dankuukyaku punishes. Further, when doing cMK, you can follow up by doing Gadouken -> FADC -> cs.MP/cs.HP -> H Dankuukyaku, that’ll surely do more damage than cMK -> EX Dankuukyaku.

Hope you find this useful.

Thanks lxion_90, Im not going to dissect everything like booty clappers post because yours is much longer lol but I will reply

First, the main reason I use c.mk to ex dankicks is because it combos if it hits but unlike c.mk to gadouken, it keeps pressure when blocked.
I ussually do not do cmk to any dankuu very often because of the very annoying jump back/ neutral jump factor. when I did do it, like you said, it was in the beggining. I will try mixing in more medium dankukyakus.

For the most part I was timing the knees to beat out any non ex shoryu and if he blocks apply pressure. It worked a lot, and sometimes It traded. I didnt get straight beat out often tho.

first off I was really nervous. I messed up almost every koryuken fadc that day ,either not dashing after the fadc or somehow getting an uppercut or fireball. When I landed after the nj.mp, I went for a cs.mp. I guess I got grabbed due to a mistime?? I understand this mix up well actually. I will post some online matches against good players to show you guys.

Yes there was. Some were actually accidents (any mp or lp koryuken was an accident, I only do hp and ex version)

I was trying to land the focus on jump backs but even lvl 3 wasnt working for some reason, even in the corner. I will try those kinds of frame traps, I never thought about using fs.lk of fs.mk in these situations.

I am very bad at combos. I am not really good at fighting games or execution. I play them “for fun” and I pick only my favorite characeters. But I play in a serious way, to win, if that makes sense. I only used c.mk x ex dankuu as quick punish and cr.hp x hk dankuu or u1 as stronger punish. I understand what you are saying. I am going to try working on c.mk -> gadouken fadc cs.mp hk dankuu as a punish because if blocked it is a safe pressure string.

Thank you guys for your help. I think fixing some things I can make my Dan scarier and less one dimensional to fight.

EDIT: I have a favor to ask anyone with good capture equipment and an Xbox Live account. If you would be willing, could I trouble you to upload some of my matches from my replay list?? I have many online matches against B+ to A+ rank players, including Juicebox, Air, Filipino Champ, MashdatDp, Phaze, Marn, Mike Ross, Checkmate and others…There are all older videos where I was even scrubbier and no one knew the match up lol but Id like to clear um off my replay list. Please let me know. If no one wants to watch these, also let me know so I dont waste my time lol.

EDIT EDIT: actually i already have the vids vs mike ross and marn up, one on my channel and the other on some random episode of excellent adventures…but if anyone could help me out itd be appreciated…

sup.

I might have time Sunday to record some matches. Send me a message on xbl.

Thanks Stein!! Hopefully I will be home and have a working TV Sunday…

You guys at The Box should upload our ft5 match too, even though it wasnt very hype to everyone else lol.

Just noticed a couple of days ago that a guy I met on Eventhubs, Tectondrio, had uploaded a little Saikyo Session we had one night a couple of months ago. The bad thing was that… he was in the US and I was here, so the matches were severely laggy. Maybe not full of lagspikes but there was a constant delay of like half a second… so, when you see me doing really bad things or see me NOT doing good things it’s because of the lag. Also, lag demoralizes me immensely so I got very casual and all my… hardcoreness disappeared. That’s why there’s so many reckless jump ins et.c. in the matches. Enjoy.

I also noticed some Balrog player uploaded a match between him and me where I get severely owned… God, I suck at overheads! Don’t really know why it went THAT bad though.

Wish I had some way to record my own replays so I could show something that’s actually impressive.

I thought you uploaded the video? I enjoy watching some Dan vs Dan action. I hope to see some more of your dueling it out

Here are some matches I had in the beginning of April. I have not played in a while.

Well, obviously I didn’t!

I see you improved a bit. I feel your biggest strength is that you’re quite a safe player, except for the random ultras and EX KRKs you occasionally do… Apart from that I still see your main problems; your insufficient punishing and your lack of mixups. I think I saw like five EX SRKs from Ken that you blocked and then punished with a throw. Not ok. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Start using his real damaging punishes and improve your mixup game by going nuts with the Dankuukyakus and bait tech throws!

… And here’s a teaser for something less stupid (but still pretty stupid) that will be released shortly after AE hits the PC in July.

actually my bigger weakness is to not playing everyday for a hour. By playing a hour or 2 a day a lot of the stuff becomes second nature. I really wish I could play everyday, but sadly I get to play for a couple hours every 3-4 days. I really need to find in my area people that play SSF4(the arcades suck in North Cali). The Psn has been down so its been almost a whole month since I played as well.

Thank god i have one more week before my spring semester is over :D.

In advance thanks for your advise Ixion_90. Everything you have said has been helpful. :open_mouth:

I’m pleased that you appreciated my tips.

Imo you don’t friends: Go online! Hahah… just kidding… well, of course friends are not useless but there are disadvantages when the friend has predictable patterns. But online only play with people with good connection or you’ll learn nothing…

The PSN thing sucks extremely bad, I’m starting to get crazy here. Tomorrow is like the fourth friday I won’t be able to Dan the PSN if Sony doesn’t miraculously revive it. My abstinence is really severe now. I may die. =|

You guys could always buy a 360 and another copy of the game to get your fix. Seems wise to me if there’s no arcade in range!

With PSN being down, i decided to buy an easycap to record some matches. I only just realized i barely have any of my Dan saved, but I do have these to share.

First one is Dan related, the next two are just for fun

Also if anyone would wanna give me tips on improving easycaps quality id be grateful, still messing around with the settings and all

Actually Sony will always earn part of my respect for making the most awesome controller ever. Microsoft earns NOTHING of it for doing the exact opposite.
