Saikyo-ryuu for Dummies: Dan Video Thread!

Well, I definately know now. This is the first time I’ve played anyone serious who uses Ultra 2 with Balrog, so it never crossed my mind. cr.HP was just a f-up on my part, not intentional.

It’s funny seeing these matches from the other side, because as far as I knew it was the same person all four matches. I was trying to figure out why the hell his playstyle kept changing so much, now I know.

I still praise to PKSkyler against Mike Ross…because nobody else make him cry silently. You can tell by his facial expression.

Should know that MK/HK Dankuu is -2 on block and grab Ultra are either 1 or 2 frame start-up :stuck_out_tongue:

AND KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! XD

You know what? Dan is so fucking legit. Good stuff, hWnd. I habeeb in you too.

Hopefully this means we get more converts, the dojo’s been kinda dusty lately.

Edit: Also, one thing I noticed. After a Focus Attack you dashed back. Do you do that intentionally or was it an accident. I’ve been trying to condition myself to refrain from dashing forward after a Level 1, since it’s unsafe, whereas a level 2 puts you at a frame advantage on block.

I’ve kind of broken it down into this, since I end up using Dan’s Focus Attack a lot.

Level 1: Connect, Dash Back everytime. If Counter-Hit Crumpled, cr.HK sets up a safe-jump and OS attempt.
Level 2: Connect, Dash Forward. On block, gives a frame advantage. Can try for a cl.Jab xx LK.Danku or a blockstring, Koryuken FADC, whatever. On hit, combo.

I still haven’t worked it into habit yet, though. But this seems to be the best way of looking at Focus Attack options.

great stuff

Thanks Krackatoa, just doing what I do. I got lucky this time and ended up on film with a win streak. Remember the 1st to 10 against Gouken in vanilla? That was heatbreaking. Win some, lose some, as I’m sure you know.

With regards to back dash after focus. Yeah, I’ve got into the habbit of back dash after focus most of the time. I don’t break it down by level, too much to process mid-match for me, so I basically go on feel based on screen position, life lead, meter, etc. If it lands and I back dash that’s more damage than I would have otherwise. If I get a crumple I can get in at least one bonus hit and Ultra 1 if I have it. Seems like a smart move.

Cheers.

It should totally be doable with practice, since you know the timing of your level 1 and level 2. Set a Dummy to Random Block and Random Counter-Hit in practice mode and just try it for a bit, switching between both levels. It’s really disorienting at first, but it definitely feels like something that’s learn-able.

Edit: Also…

“His Dan is legit.”

-Mike Ross-

Those were quite possibly the greatest Cross Counter I’ve seen yet. Good job dude - you’re my new hero!

:china:

I never do Lv1 Focus (purposely) so I mostly dash forward, I keep meaning to work them into my game but forget about them in combat :frowning:

So so sweet.

Shoutouts to hWnd for getting me interested in the School of Saikyo.

I looked to see if first, someone would have posted that video on SRK, and second… if the guy in the video posted on SRK. Thank you for putting your word in showing the world that Dan is in fact, The G.O.A.T.

That was a hilarious, hilarious video.

What’s “G.O.A.T.”?

Greatest of all time, so says the internet. Also shoutouts to UltraDavid for making James Chen none to pleased with Dan.

Shoutouts to UltraDavid for blowing up Chen.

Well I’ve played Dan against James’ Cammy in Super a lot, so I know how he plays. I like Dan’s footsies in that match and I like his defense, especially now that Cammy’s dive kicks are so much worse. So I didn’t press up on him all that much, just tried to take advantage of good opportunities and other than kinda play a patient zoning and defense game. I bet one round on antiair u1 (I thought he was gonna dive kick but he just did jump hk, so he landed in time to block), but I think other than that I had him in straight rounds.

Then I had to play against DJ Divine’s Juri and got blown up because I was still in defensive zoning mode, heh.

My first match was against Marn, and I actually think I did alright. I led each round until the end, but he won them because he got genei jin and landed it each round. But that was my first time playing against a good Yun, and now that I have I have several ideas for dealing with him better next time!

Looking forward to it. You’re in the frontlines with all the hands on with AE.

Personal request! Let’s see some cl.HK punish combos! If HK.Danku did get a damage nerf, cr.HP xx HK.Danku probably does less damage than cl.HK > HP.Koryuken, and far less than cl.HK > cr.MP xx HP.Koryuken. :o

About close hk cr mp xx hp dp, that only worked on the chars I tried (Blanka, Ryu, don’t remember who else) after focus crumple dash toward. So like with Blanka cpu I did empty jump to get close to cl hk cr mp xx dp, and mp linked (it always did in my testing) but dp whiffed, whereas the whole cl hk cr mp xx hp dp combo worked after I lv3 focus crumpled cpu Blanka. So this might be char/situation-dependent. But cl hk cr mp xx ex danku always worked.

Btw, in blockstrings cr lp/lk to cl hk works is a really good counterhit setup to blow up late crouch techs. Thing is, in high level play you only ever really see late crouch techs. That setup might lose to people mashing throw or low short, but none of my opponents do that.

Can’t you do it on grapple characters, mostly Zangief? If I’m wrong, I am able to do it on a Zangief

Yeah it would make sense if you could do it on wider characters, I’ll test that out next time I go.

In the meantime, here’s my match against James Chen:

I missed a couple big punish opportunities and mistimed an antiair u1, but otherwise I think I played alright. I know that James likes to random dp, so I didn’t want to press too hard. At the same time, I feel good about Dan’s midrange game against Cammy in general and good about his defense against AE Cammy, so I tried to keep my spacing and was fine with playing defensively when I needed to.
