Cvital is probably the best sim on xbl he gets me sometimes too so don’t feel bad. Typically taking some damage to get in is preferable to staying away and getting drilled all day but if the sim relies on punishing you with st mp/hp a lot after fb trade you should crouch block and continue hitting him with a few fp fb’s from full screen to get him to jump/drill you which you can dp. After you dp him out of 1 or 2 jumps he should be playing more cautiously which allows you to tk bait into dp or another tk or walkup throw if your close enough.
Jrh is great but don’t use it unless you’re already close because it loses to st hp clean. Taking some chip isn’t a big deal, getting knocked down is.
Cammy gives me a hell of a time. It typically goes like this: Cammy has closed the distance and does her up close pokes (take your pick) into drills, all of which are blocked. Then she gets close again (typically by safe drilling again) and does similar block strings except this time they end with hooligans for huge damage and a free knockdown. I’m so terrified of that safe drill that I end up eating hooligans instead. Then I uppercut either slightly too early or slightly too late and get drilled to set up her pressure game once again. I occasionally guess correctly but missing an uppercut is far more risky than rewarding.
My online reaction time probably isn’t the best but with Fei, I can input a FK/CW when i feel a hooligan coming but then again I’m not as fearful of her drill because I have normal moves that can beat it or exchange with it.
My questions:
How is Sagat to approach this match IN GENERAL?
Additionally, do you have any tips on how to deal with her damned drill/hooligan mixups up close? I know Sagat probably should never allow her in but when she does get close/corner Sagat is the match over?
The drill is quite a pain–does Sagat have any normal moves that stuff her drill?
I watched Lyghts Out and Stiff Peter on youtube but sadly they were both taken down by the Cammy player. The old ST 'Gat vids don’t seem to apply here with Cammy’s new drill. Help please!
Sagat doesn’t really have any normals that can beat the Drill consistently IMO. I mean, I have seen his cr Strong and st Short beat or trade with it, but I don’t rely on them too much.
I prefer to play it safe and block the Drills, punish the unsafe ones with cr Forward, RH Tiger, and basically just watch out for Hooligans so I can punish with Uppercut or whatever normal, jb normal, etc. I will sometimes do psychic Jab Uppercut to hit some Drills before they start, but it’s a risky strategy. Also my Uppercuts have almost never been stuffed by a Drill (sounds like you’re doing it too early). Also his j Short is pretty good against the Drill as well as Hooligans.
But the best bet IMO is to frustrate the Cammy player by not doing anything against the Drills, and forcing them to walk up throw or use Hooligan (which they want to anyway) and then punishing that. If you’re not good at punishing Hooligans, I don’t recommend doing this.
Also, the best strategy obviously, is to keep Cammy as far away as possible by zoning her. If she’s consistently getting close, then maybe you need to improve your zoning game. But if she does get in, I don’t really have a tough time dealing with her Drill/Hooligan mixups. And this is from playing Robokop, Silver Rain, Keefe, etc who are very good at that mixup game.
I don’t really play either of these characters, but how about good old n. jump roundhouse? That would beat both hooligans and drills, and if you land on her drill you just might be able to dizzy by comboing into low MK, low tiger.
THIS. Also if she gets close throw 1 or 2 st lk’s to bait drill.
Kaosspider if you have the mindset that sagat can’t play as well from close range as he can from full screen then you’re cutting yourself off from his full potential. He doesn’t have the greatest normals outside of j hk (which IMO is tied with geif crrh and fei’s cr fp for best normal) but st lk, cr mk, and st hp are all decent enough to help you effectively rush that shit down.
Other then geif, hawk, honda, and boxer who no character should ever get close to anyways sagat can lock anyone down in the corner.
How come you never see any Sagat’s use J.MK, Cr.MK/St.MKxxSuper? Its only as practical as Hawks Super. : P
Better question =P.
I’ve only done it a handful of times and I don’t even know the motion lol.
Here is me playing against Ken, Cammy, Vega and M.Bison using Sagat. Fighting Vega is just no fun. I almost think it is easier with Sim and that is not saying much.

Against Vega:
You are letting him get away with far too many fake walldives. Fierce High tiger that shit.
If he does a normal fake low tiger it or maybe tiger knee but unsure if knee will beat the walldive.
Use j.mp not j.fp.
Do not use Tiger upper on wakeup against walldive. Does Not Work.
Do not try to Zone Claw. You are not O.Sagat and even O.Sagat has a hard time doing that.
For god’s sake do not punish blocked flipkick with a throw. Do some real damage.
Get a knockdown and then get on him. St.lk is really good against him and especially in the corner.
Tiger knee mixups are also good because the risk reward is really in your favor.
And even if you get punished for it the damage is negligible.
Ahhh, thanks bro. I’ll have to try that because as you could see I didnt know how to approach the fight.
Yeah, the Vega match is no fun for me either. Those safe poke of his is annoying.
Here are some more videos of me. I would like to think I’m getting better but I dont know. So frustrating.

I dont know how to approach. Jump in from Blanka seems to nullify just about everything. Very small window to hit cleanly against him.

Yo poison we should play 2gether…
Zoolander im callin you out man…
And i need help with sagat vs supernyc’s e.honda
@Sweet Poison in regards to ur blanka match up i watched your video…throw some more low tigers and count how many tigers u throw b4 the blanka will jump at you…if u can scare him with your uppercuts to his melon start throwing some feints (low tiger, crouching jab, w8 to c what blanka does react…)
Definitely man. I’ll be on more. And Honda in general is tough. Between sumo splash, hhs and ochio I dont know what to do.
My toughest characters to face are: Vega, M.Bison, Blanka, Dhalsim, Balrog, E. Honda.
charge characters are a bitch…don’t know why
Sorry been busy with dat MVC3! From the last page SB here’s some tips:
The key with sagat is to consistently guess right the problem is winning coinflips a dozen times requires yomi you develop on the inside over time nobody can teach you that. Vs ken you have faster fb’s use them more don’t be scared of his j rh the reason he tagged you with it so much is your doing the 2 rh fb’s 1 fp fb pattern too much, mix it up delay the timings slightly. Vs cammy use cr rh less and cr mk more it’s better for footsies and I noticed you almost never use stlk or st mk pressure after you get anyone in corner. Vs dic stand your ground push him int othe corner with st lk.
I’ll watch and comment on your vis on this page tomorrow.
Some great advice from Sirlin vs sim:
"I use tiger knee about 50 times per round. Against Cole, he made me tone it down to like 20 times per round. Your natural resting state should be tiger kneeing, mixing in the occasional “something other than tiger knee, such as stand there or block.” Heh. This is a slight exaggeration, but strikes at the truth! You basically force him to play super defensively because if he play any other way, your random tiger knees will some how hit him, then you get to be completely in on him. Any hit from tiger knee means you can do several more in a row before he gets up, timing it so you barely get on the other side of him as he gets up. Threaten with meaty whatever into dizzy combo or meaty whatever into throw. Or, after hitting with tiger knee, do a few more then jump crossup with medium kick. Sagat’s crossup with that move (same as New Sagat’s in ST) is really damn wonky and hard to block. Honestly, Dhalsim should be terrified of you. He can barely stick anything out, he is forced into turtle mode, and you will surely have super to threaten him with due to your repeated tiger knees.
Stand strong is incredibly good vs Dhalsim. He can’t crouch it and you can kind of pin him down with it by making him block it repeatedly. Simple stuff like making them afraid after blocked stand strong (mix up with stand strong again, sweep, or walk up throw (yes really)) is effective."

This was brutal for me. Any tips or pointers would be nice.
You neglected Sagat’s entire footsie game, you backed yourself into the corner every game, and you did quite a few random uppercuts.
You really need to develop a strong ground game. st.lk, cr.mk and sweep are very useful in this matchup, and in general.
Here are some things you should try:
Walk into poke range, cr.mk into RH tiger, or sweep.
Walk into poke range, st.lk, immediately low tiger. or walk back a bit after st.lk and do a low tiger, or wait for a jump in to uppercut or sweep.
walk in cr.mk a little out of poke range to bait a jump in, uppercut it.
walk into poke range, walk back out, and punish a sweep or dp whiff. or if they do nothing low tiger or wait for the jumpin.
These are just a very small amount of examples (and not even all his useful normals), but it’s something you should think about when you play sagat. There’s a lot more to it than low tiger spam until they jump in. Even if you like turtling you can’t just rely in specials, you have to learn all of Sagat’s normals.
And against Honda, J.Hk is really good, along with neutral jump. Hop right over his headbutts and it’s a free punish. or nj.hk his headbutts. Being able to deal with headbutt makes the matchup much easier.
REMEMBER, the stronger your ground game gets, the more your opponent will be forced to jump.
