Hey guys; I stopped playing in August because I’m trying to get my grown man on when it comes to how I spend my time and my finances. And to be honest, it wasn’t hard to quit because I was tired of the non stop dping on wakeup, the endless stream of shotos , Cammy, and Chun Li’s online and my 3 favorite SFV characters getting slaughtered by these tactics ( Rog, Laura, and kinda Urien–he wasn’t out then but I figured with him having no meterless reversal he’d have similar issues). I was always particularly irritated by Laura’s cg being 6 frames, Rog not having a low that led to big damage, and Mika being so much better than Laura. I decided to drop in on the forum and to check out youtube matches now that season 2 has arrived. Lol imagine how I felt once I started reading you guy’s posts and seeing the season 2 matches on Youtube. I’m legit thinking about buying all of my stuff back to get back into this game. A few questions though.

Also hate to rant but it’s kinda nice to have a SF where the shotos don’t just dominate. I’ve loved SF since WW came out but that’s something I got tired of a long time ago and I think it was starting to make the game a bit stale. They needed to mix things up. I’m glad they did.

Some peeps are saying she is top 3. Hardly. She still has a lot of the same problems as Season 1, but she has a lot more options once she is in close range. The global changes also benefit her, but not to the point here she WTF PWNs every match she is in.
Yeah, Cammy’s even I’d say. She can dominate you the entire match but one dumb uppercut means she’s almost dead. So while on paper she has a big advantage she can’t really make any mistakes because Laura can make her pay really hard for it. It’s a bit like Gief vs. Seth in SFIV.
That said, Season 2 didn’t really change Laura’s bad matchups. The shotos and Necalli are a bit less idiotic since they can’t force you away from your pressure game for free anymore (DP nerf), but the footsie characters (Chun, Karin) as well as Gief, Guile and most importantly Urien are pretty bad matchups still.

Can we talk about how st. MK is also a fantastic AA on top of everything else? Fireball > dash/command dash > st. MK catches back or forward jumps so many times it’s ridiculous. I like imagining the feeling of despair and loss in my opponent’s face after that I tagged every one of their jumps with it.
P.S. also I’m learning the joys of doing L Bolt on wake-up after grabs. The guaranteed combo on hit is delicious.
Is it? Haven’t tried it as an AA. I just got back from vacation (2 weeks in Vietnam) only to come back rusty and a bit out of it.
Can you use it to counter a cross-up? Or do you dash-back/forward only?
ST MK gets a lot of flak right now. Peeps are saying that it makes Laura too good as it is an extremely effective poke that easily translates into a counter hit which leads to (‘insert combo here’). Peeps are forgetting or don’t know that it is highly punishable. They want it to go back to S1. I think it is sticker shock on actually having to fight Laura in S2 frankly.
Punishable in what way? It’s pretty fast so whiff punishing is going to be difficult for some characters. And afaik it’s only -2 on block so while you can and should stick out something after blocking it she won’t get hit unless she does something dumb afterwards.
Definitely one of her best buffs of Season 2 though, that’s for sure. Haven’t used it as an AA either yet but I’ve barely played Laura recently. St. MP and HP Bolt cover most aerial options pretty well though.
I do find it useful as an anti air against gief. There’s a certain range where 5mp can whiff but 5mk covers it.
You can’t counter a cross-up normal, however if they cross you up with an empty jump to escape your setups you can easily tag them with st. MK even when they almost touched the ground.
tbh I think the startup buff for st. MK was unnecessary. Being able to loop it on CH is pretty ridiculous. I think it should be 6f while retaining the +3/-2, so that you can still combo on hit but you can’t just spam it forever and still get something out of it (though of course I will continue spamming it )
Or you have a smart opponent that learns you use it and capitalize on it. Trying to continue a block string afterwards is almost impossible unless you get the exact next frame with a jab. Even then you may trade if your opponent does the same. If you follow up with something else the counter hit will come.
Its good, but not perfect. I fear if they do the ‘minor balance patch’ rumor that has been floating around this move will be on the chopping block in some way.
I’ve played tons of people that can punish 5MK spamming and very consistently. Those that don’t are the same scrubs that couldn’t figure it out in season 1. It’s a very good button but I’d trade it in a heart beat for some of Urien’s, or Rashid’s, or…the list goes on. Can’t Laura have one decent poke that can occasionally win lol? Half the time it hits you’re out of range for 5LP (I will be honest though and say I’m not great at confirming in this instance) to connect anyway so your opponent can either block and be ready to punish a dash or jump, or be stupid and get frame trapped. Isn’t that the whole point of the game?

BTW it seems as though we are getting another balance patch coming. People are saying Laura needs a heavy nerf, I don’t see how Capcom can make that happen without throwing her in the dumpster yet again like S1. The things she got were the things that the majority of the cast have and now she’s actually a viable character. Other than maybe st.mk (and that’s a HUGE maybe), what the hell else could they do to her to warrant nerfs???

People are whining about her so much and its mostly because they didn’t have to learn the matchup until now. Really drives me nuts. When I ask them what specifically bothers them about laura, they either cant say anything or they complain about something laura ALREADY HAD in season 1. Or are just idiots. I see shit like “laura is +2 on block with her s.mk” and stuff stupider than that.
