I don’t think anyone is siding with the attacker, but finding out the guy goaded his attacker verbatim puts way more of the incident on him than was previously evident certainly has at least I rescinding what little sympathy I was willing to give him. There’s nothing to say this wouldn’t have happened anyway of course, but literally asking for it is just an idiotic, macho-bullshit move that nearly got him killed. I don’t like blaming the victim unless they do something stupid enough to deserve their injury and that certainly seems to merit as such.
(Of course, this is provided that this is what actually happened and it wasn’t actually a drug deal like angelpalm pointed out.)

I quite clearly meant “asking for it” in the sense of actively, directly goading someone into attacking you–the guy literally asked the person if he was going to stab him in a challenging way. I’m fine with self-defense, but I don’t see where making your attacker more likely to attack you in the first place falls into that; there’s part of the problem with “Stand Your Ground” after all, but that’s an entirely different subject matter.
That may just be me though.
As for the two posts you quoted, if that’s in response to what I said with regards to no one actually siding with the attacker, SNAAAAKE’s post doesn’t have any relevance to that whatsoever. As for jimmy1200’s post, it’s talking about how the victim should have known better given his apparent history with the guy and with the Tenderloin in general, which shows he wasn’t some random tourist who just wandered into a bad neighborhood. Again, that’s different from siding with the attacker since it’s just pointing out how the victim seems to have bad judgment, at least in this case, rather than absolving the attacker of attempted murder and the need to be arrested.
