Id like to know what is to ‘get outplayed’ for you, any example, a video of a Ryu beeing outplayed in any recent tourney, coz I think my concept of getting outplayed is different from yours and I want to know what you are talking about to reply properly.
if only sako, mago & daigo used charge characters. i hate these charge turtle bitches, they need to get their teeth bashed out by the nerfbat. or somebody dressed as guile needs to bash onos teeth out with a bat to make a point.
Hey MC187, are you joking?
Daigo has been known to use Guile, A lot of people said Guile was top tier when Super came out because of him…
On the subject of Ryu’s difficulty to use…I am going to agree with the guy who said that his combos weren’t too hard overall, It’s just that his mixup game is certainly not the best. In upper-competitive play, he tends to get left behind.
You could FADC into ultra till your hands shatter of arthritis…but that wouldn’t do any good If you can’t get that first hit in.

I don’t think Ryu being high tier has anything to do with Daigo, even in vanilla. Right now Honda is considered the best character in SSF4 and we don’t see too many top players using him or doing good with Honda. Ryu is just a solid character, Air beat Justin Wong with his Ryu and there are other successful Ryu players like Alex Valle, Fuudo…
But yeah they fucked up his DP, MP DP for AA is strict timing compared to Ken’s or Sagat’s uppercut.

this video sums of RYU players after and before Daigo
I think his mp dp is good. Just time it late and your set. Do it like that and its just as effective as his hp dp in vanilla.
What you obviously don’t understand is that to master Ryu, you pretty much have to master every aspect of the game.
Ryu isn’t a character like Dhalsim that you can own people simply by having good reactions or Guile where you basically just have to zone well. He’s not Balrog or Chun where you can just press buttons and auto-footsie you opponent to death. There are characters that you only have to master one or two different skill sets to play them effectively. With Ryu you have to master all of it just to compete.
Some characters you can get by just with good execution or match up knowledge. With Ryu you have to have impeccable zoning skills, footsies, match up knowledge, reactions, knowledge of option selects, executuion (YES! Execution. I know you all love to claim Ryu has “easy combos”, but why is it that 50% of the BnB’s Daigo uses, I don’t see any other Ryu’s consistently utilizing? Valle for example is a great player, but I don’t see him executing the same shit Daigo does.). To be a competitive level Ryu, you have to have the complete package of skills.
The reason Daigo wins is because he is the complete package of fighting game skills. You’ll notice that any other Ryu that has almost all aspects of the game mastered, but if they have any weak point at all , that’s enough to ensure that they don’t win tournaments. You can have godlike execution like poongko, but still get blown up cuz you lack in other areas.
I don’t even main Ryu. It just sickens me how over rated he is in the mind of scrubs and people who truly believe in online play.
You can’t bring up Valle when talking about execution. He admits himself that he doesn’t practice that part of the game enough. Haven’t you heard of the “Valle Special?” Srk, fadc, ex dp. He’s an amazing player, but this isn’t his strength or anything. I think he’s been doing better lately, though.
What makes Daigo’s combos impressive isn’t necessarily their difficulty. It’s that he knows every character specific combo Ryu has, and he uses them whenever possible. This is why you see him do things you don’t see often. It’s not because the combo is hard, but memorizing what characters these combos work on, and being able to use them in the matchups is difficult. Most Ryu players stick to the combos that work on the entire cast.
Something like cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mk, super is not character specific. f+hp, cr.HP, SRK, fadc, U1 is not character specific. f+hp, cr.mp, cr.hp, tatsu works on enough characters that I wouldn’t call it character specific. OS-ing a tatsu or DP on a safe jump is not character specific. Besides f+hp, cr.mp, cr.mp, cr.mk, hk tatsu Ryu doesn’t really have a catalog of character specific combos.
What do 95% of Ryu’s do after a forward+fierce? Either a HP SRK or a dropped combo. I’m not saying Ryu has particularly difficult execution. He has his fair share of easier and more difficult things like every other character. He’s not some kind of exception to the rule where everything he has is “piss easy” like everyone likes to think he is.
People act like Ryu has Balrog level footsies and super-mega-monster-godlike-damage. Everybody acts like he has easy execution that a one-handed blind retard could mess up, yet I see Ryu players drop combos like a muhfucka everyday. People act like his fireball is somehow earth-shatteringly overpowered. Didn’t like 80% of the cast that didn’t already have one get an U2 that was specifically made to go through fireballs?
I’m just sick of hearing about how easy and powerful Ryu is. I’ve got news for you. If you honestly think that, you fucking suck at this game. Seriously, do any of you even think Ryu is top 5 in this game? Are you the same people that think Blanka is overpowered?
Quoted for truth.
I completely agree. Aside from maybe c.HP x HP SRK from a further distance, Ryu doesn’t really have any other important character specific combos other than f+HP > c.MP > c.MP > c.MK x HK Tatsu.
Hell, Ryu’s not even guaranteed top ten at this point. Honda, Guile, Boxer, Chun, Abel, Dictator, Sagat, Rufus, Gouki, Sim and Rose are all as good as Ryu or better IMO, and there are others that are close, like Ken and Cammy.
People just stay salty cause Ryu is popular.
You’re right. I don’t see anyone else using c.lp, c.lp, c.mk xx super. Not a great combo, tho. That comes down to Daigo’s awareness again, seeing that even though the super is scaled, it’s the only finisher that will end the round.
Can only speak for myself on sps, c.hp xx hp srk xx fadc, ultra. The link adds about 40 dmg, if i remember right, and a ton of stun. The link adds no damage if it’s off a lvl 2 focus. If they hadn’t changed Ryu’s dp and ultra like they did, you’d see this a lot more, but after the nerfs, the risk/reward isn’t what it used to be.
I guess character specific is subjective now, huh? It doesn’t work on several characters. I wasn’t just speaking about that combo, either. I’ve also seen him use c.lp, c.lp, c.hp xx hp srk, which doesn’t work on everyone.
I didn’t even say he’s got a “catalog” of these combos. Aside from some quirks with c.lp, c.lp, c.lp, c.lp/s.lp, c.hk, I think they’ve all been named. All I said was, when it comes to combos, these are all you see daigo do that other Ryu’s don’t use. He’s just got a very good knowledge of what works vs. who, and how much damage these combos will net him. Not many people can tell when sps, c.hp xx srk, fadc, ultra will get the KO, but a combo without the link will not.
Aside from the trolls, I think what people mean when they say ryu has easy execution is that he is easier than most of the cast, which you can’t really argue with. His moveset just seems to gel better than a lot of characters. Like how he can link any button after a c.lp. He’s only got a few difficult links and aside from the one situation I mentioned, the risk/reward is good on them is good. It’s not like 1f jabs or a 1f bnb(pretty sure it’s people that play this type of character that do most of the trolling about ryu’s combos). I don’t think he’s great or anything and I’m not trolling. Ryu’s combos just seem easier to learn than other characters I’ve tried to pick up. The other shotos seem the same way. None of them have a bnb like Guile or Vega, and I think that’s what people are getting at.
daank, you serious?
ryu’s links are very tough when compared to the rest of the cast.
cr.LP, cr.HK = 1 frame
cr.LP, cr.MK = 1 frame
SPS, cr.HP = 1 frame
SPS, cr.MP = 1 frame
cr.MP, cr.MK = 1 frame
cr.MP, cr.HK = 1 frame
cr.MP, cr.MP = 2 frame
cr.LP, cr.HP = 2 frame
cr.LP, cr.MP = 2 frame
all of these links are part of ryu’s bnbs. you need these links to win against good players.
guile has tougher links? his only tough link is cr.LP, cr.MP = 1 frame. You dont need it whatsoever to win. with guile, executing combos is not what will make or break a match. with ryu if you dont land your links you will lose against good players.
i dont use vega much, but i guess you are talking about the difficulty in linking jabs?
if you look over the cast, i dont know how ryu wouldnt land top 5 in execution difficulty.
if daigo stops using ryu, i think most people will desert ryu.
For sure…
…
Not all 1 frame links are hard to execute, it depends on the rhythm, for example Ryu’s jab to sweep is an easy 1 frame link combo, Ryu’s SPS, cr.HP is tough though since the timing is weird.
No wonder i can’t execute so many of those combos.
i mean i think ryu is hard to master, but hardest character to use in the cast? i guess ya’ll never heard of cody, viper, etc, etc.
Guile has some tough combos like Back HK into c.mp into FlashKick, that shit is pretty hard to do constantly and you don’t see many Guile players doing that very often.
funniest thing i’ve read in a while
