OP post definitely needs to be updated.

Against Seth be wary of wall to wall jump overhead as he tries to cross you up.

Do a late HP Shoryu and it will trade and you will recover in time to use an ultra. If you don’t have the ultra. Use ex fireball. That should stop him from using that elbow for awhile.

If you don’t have meter or ultra just do a crouching HP. IIRC Sagat wins that trade by a bit.

jHK, cHP, LK Tatsu, Shinku Hadoken (490)

Anyone having consistantcy problems with this? I can’t figure out if sometimes my timing is too slow or the tatsu knocks the oppenent farther away on occasion preventing the Shinku from hitting. Can anyone verifiy this?

just as I feared then. I can’t punish Sagat for jumping in unless I burn metre. Seriously, this is ridiculous. Why the hell should Sagat get a free jump-in? As far as im aware, no other character in the game has a jump-in move that can’t be countered (ubnless its an EX special or something). Not only that, but it hits low, so you cant even use the c.mk counter… GREAT… Would just like to thank Capom at this point.

Yup, I feel your pain. I play a very, very good sagat frequently and he mixes that in once in awhile.

He can do it at the apex at his jump and if he sees it hit > combo. It’s a great air to air as well.

Don’t quote me on this but I think I saw some players at ideal distance walk almost under him and use a standing jab to sort of reset him and counter that.

wow the timing of this sagat elbow thing came up at the perfect time. I was just about to post the question myself. Lets try to figure this out guys, this is making me tilt like crazy.

I had some luck with c.fp in training, but i’m not 100% sure about it. SeemsSagat is basicallyjust a cheat. Might be able to j.mp it - probably will work, butI dont think it should be neccesary to jump to beat it, should be able to beat it fromthe ground. I know that no SRK works. If youre early, s.fk will, but that needs quick reflxes. It hits low, so low counter wont work.

Honestly, even tough it’s total bullshit, I think that quick reflexs is the only option. Obviously, he has a massive hitbox, so just chuck a s.fk or c.fp early.

btw; in all honesty, do you guys get the impression that Sagat players need less skill to win just because he’s so damn good?

Yes. I hate to say it because I don’t believe in the word cheap. But yes. I feel he has more advantage than most people. Why does one of the best zoners in the game also have one of the highest damage per normal/special/super/ultra and one of the highest stamina ratings? Doesn’t make sense. He SHOULD be more like Akuma in terms of health

but look at the guy, foo is buff as fuck! lol

now when i look at ST sagat looks like he took some damn roids from ST to sf4. hah:nono:

Oh man, Sagat definately roided it up. He was a skinny dude in ST and now look at him. Dude is huge

maybe that Ryu uppercut messed with his mind, put him off his food, cos during Alpha/zero (based before SF II, trivia fans, but made after) he’s pretty damn huge too… Then he went on the Dhalsim diet… But now he’s back and bigger than ever! Like Christian Bale going from the Machinist to Batman. Must’ve been a shedload of protein shakes… And the Russian training regime from Rocky III!

… Except Alpha/Zero is after the infanous metsu-SRK, so that’s that theory out of the window!

I understand that the nature of this game dictates that certain match ups will favor certain characters but I’m have a lot of trouble against a GOOD Fei Long.

My friend has a really-REALLY good Fei (only came across one or two better) that I play against constantly and he is giving me fits.

Fei Long just seems to neutralize all of Ryu’s strong points.

I usually start by trying to zone him a bit and gain a slight health advantage with fireballs. Once he gets in on me, especially in the corner I have to shift into a defense mode and try to punish or hurricane kick out of danger but I never win the damage war. If I get stuck in the corner I get constantly out poked/crossed up (which I can block most of the time) hop overhead kicked, or Tenshin/blah blah blah 3X Rekka before I can get away.

Most of my damage comes from c.MK FB, random poke string, the occasional punish, and AA SRKing/EX FB. He gets punished pretty badly with XXX Special or just Special in general but that isn’t exactly match specific, just a general thing.

I have no issues with CW and punishing it other than it really limits my ability to FB and zone. I hardly get caught with it. Although when you do… OUCH.

He has awesome AA. Flame Kick, neutral HK, s.HP, etc… His Flame Kick makes tick throwing, f.MP, and cross ups very hard. That thing has insane speed, invincibility, and priority. I can counter it with j.LK but not enough to ever give me an actual advantage damage wise.

He can out rush, out poke, his AA makes cross ups/jump ins/wake up very hard.

One of my biggest issues with this match up is that I have no way to really finish him. Especially if my back is against the wall (which is usually the case) and he is out of sweep/poke range. I can’t jump in/cross up. I can’t FB because of EX CW. I usually try to just back jump and HK or try to bait out the EX CW and j.HK punish into whatever. Rekka is so damn fast that and Fei has such awesome tick kill options that it isn’t an easy position to be in.

I can win, but never consistently and it feels like an uphill climb the whole time. I can beat him with other characters with way more consistency. ESPECIALLY Blanka because he rapes Fei but it is such a hollow victory. I’m sort of stuck in a rut when it comes to Ryu.

I’ve checked out the Dojo and YouTube but most of the videos end with a battered Ryu on the ground at the end.

It also doesn’t help that Fei isn’t exactly Mr. Popular so most of the advice in this thread only works against average-good Fei Longs which I don’t have trouble with online. My execution could be a little better but he beats much better Ryu players in Championship Mode the majority of the time.

Has anyone else consistently faced an excellent Fei on multiple occasions and can offer some tips/strats? Is this just a bad match up for us and I should leave it at that?

Main Fei Long. The only tip I can give you is that basically your friend figured out your playstyle which pretty much means you’ve become extremely predictable. Hence, the reason why your friend is keeping you in the corner.
TIP:
Purposely lose a couple of matches (think you’re doing that anyways) but instead of focusing on trying to win. Concentrate more on what he’s doing and what his follow ups are. Develop an answer to that.

i think the trick is to make fei earn every inch of property with fireball > backdash when necessary… also this will allow you to bait chickenwings, try to duck or neutral jump them, if the cw hits you then it’s 0 frame punish. This makes it very important that CW doesnt touch you (Even on block).

Otherwise it’s footies and ability to ultra.

P.S. Don’t jump towards fei, ever. lol

Like I said before, c.FP will trade in Sagats favor. Maybe if you have great reflexes and do it really early, you’ll hit him out of it.

But most good Sagats tend to do it really early since they know j. MP is active until you hit the floor. Meaning they could do it as soon as they jump and come all the way down and if they see it hit > combo.

and yes, Sagat is overpowered/top tier. It’s be design also. Capcom knows what it was doing. Also, yes it takes less skill to win with Sagat. But you still have to have a nice zoning game either that or a nice rushdown game and Ryu players have to just work a little harder to beat him.

Which is true in all fighting games there will always be a top tier and tiers.

J. MP of Sagat can be beat by HP shoryu. If you are losing than u need to take a step forward and do it as the jump-in has ridiculos priority at max range. Really i’m not scared of his j. MP cuz rarely do i make it an intelligent choice for the sagat to jump at the range j. MP > j. FK. J. FK also has more vertical range meaning it has a better opportunity to catch me when i fireball.

If he’s jumping with it you just have to make sure it’s anything but pixel perfect max range and you shouldn’t even trade. At no range if you time the shoryuken correctly will u flat out lose, but if max ranged i agree the window is small. You pretty much have to do it pixels before it hits your face.

So … i’m getting back after probably a 2 month hiatus from the game. Played a few hours yesterday and have a lot more problems with balrog than when i left. Really the problem is cr. FK I can’t find a way to shut it down as anything but an EX fireball just outside of cr. FK range gets me headbutted on reaction fireball wise. Try to trickhim into letting go of charges but that only gets me so far, making me play the poking game. He just turtles up after he gets a lead and counterpokes me with cr. fk … played like 10 matches and won a few by playing the best spacing game i could, but cr. FK just made it so easy for him to win the spacing game as for some reason 95% of the time he does it and i do a faster move we trade >.>

A tip for beating sagat’s j.mp is don’t SRK immediatley, wait until it’s almost on top of you before you SRK. You want to hit him with the first hit frame of SRK (which is invincible), otherwise you’re very likely to trade (and do less damage).

This applies against everyone, but against Sagat his j.mp is so weird shaped you have to consciously tell yourself to do it

Is anti-air FA a viable choice for his elbow? Since its still active all the way down you’d be able to dash before his next attack?

It would absorb the elbow, but a lot of folks have a habit of doing SRK after hearing the ‘tshhk’ of a focus attack absorbing a jumpin, which would deal the damage of both the jumpin and TU (ouch!). I wouldn’t rely on it, but it might work occasionally.
