Ryu General Discussion Thread: Frame Data, Strategies, Combos, etc

this is a really basic and probably stupid question for most but when reading strategies for Ryu i always see the dragon punch and i dont know what move it is. is it named differently in the moves list and its just common slang or what? and how do you do it?

Shoryuken. It’s what it’s been called for the longest time among fans here. Or shoryu for short.

AHH!!! i knew it. thank you sir for the hasty response. just found out the tournament im in tomorrow is not full roster so i lost my boy Fei Long, gotta learn real quick some Ryu stuffff

Any good combo videos?

this guy is pretty sick!

Done on a standard 360 pad ffs… The combos that incorporate dashes take the piss…

I second the emotion

:wow::wow::clapdos:

i think its still possible to do a super and cancel into an ultra as well. I know i’ve done it - did he think If doing that?

For those having trouble doing Ryu’s shoryuken > FADC > Ultra combo:

i learned a slight shortcut when i was doing abel’s foward kick > dash trial. when you do ryu’s shoryuken, your joystick should be in the diagonal down + foward corner. you can then tap mp + mk and then move your joystick to neutral then tap foward once instead of twice to dash cancel then finally the ultra motion. when i first started doing this combo i was tapping foward twice and was dashing twice. after doing abel’s trial i realized why.

so in summary, here’s the original command in the first post: Shoryuken, mp+mk, hold mp+mk, forward, forward, release mp+mk, Ultra

and here’s the slight shortcut: Shoryuken, tap mp+mk, (neutral + forward), Ultra

hopefully this makes sense. to practice this you can put your stick in the diagonal down + foward corner, hard punch (for a crouching fierce), tap mp + mk, (neutral + foward). your ryu should do a crouching fierce then cancel to ex focus attack then dash.

my money is on this guy for the gamestop sf4 tournament haha.

these character trials are no joke. i gave up on ryu’s hard trial 2. the timing is tough for the foward + hp link to crouching hp. and then on top of that to cancel into srk and then super… fuck that. :annoy::annoy::annoy:

I was messing around in training mode earlier and found out that if timed late, Ryu’s (and probably Ken’s) j. lk DOES NOT cross-up in the corner.

I want to know what other players use for jump ins. I used j.rh like ST but it never seems to work if I trade hits with another player. I’ve been testing it out but seems like if i jump in with it and another player is also jumping in also such as sagat using his j.rh, Ryu always looses. I think j.fierce works a lot better that j.rh.

Also I’ve been having this problem too. In ST i used to land this little combo cr.jab cr.jab cr.forwardxx fierce hadouken but in SF4 while I’m doing cr.jabs i sometimes get tiger uppercutted or shoryuken out of it:looney::arazz:
From my experience this game is not like ST at all lol. Guess gotta practice up some more :wgrin:

jump ins: jHK for frontside stuff or jMK and even jLK for crossups
srks have the utmost priority in sf4 so unless its deep as fuck you’re gonna lose or trade (i.e:lose)
clp clp cmkXXHP hadouken combos so if your getting hit out of it your not comboing it?
uhhh

if you cant get it to combo
clk clp cmk xx hp hadou works and imo is easier to combo

Well when i was doing the combo I was pretty sure it was hitting but it seems like sagat doesn’t feel it at all then uppercuts me :sad:

Idk maybe its cause I’m really bad at the ryu vs sagat matchup. I ve been having problems all day with it.

But yea cool I ll try c.lk instead

Hi,

Wasn’t sure about the term FADC so did a search…

Anybody else in the same boat, it means Focus Attack Dash Cancel…

Demonstration vid with description:

subcribed.

most of my ryu strats/combos are too simplistic, wanna see what he looks like in good hands.

Couple of other good combos i thought i should add…

(Jump) High Kick, High Punch, High Shoryuken.

(Jump) High Kick, Cr.Low Punch, Cr.Low Punch, Cr.Mid Punch, Cr.Mid Kick, Hadouken ( Regular or EX)

(Jump) High Kick, Cr.Low Punch, Cr.Low Kick, Cr.Mid Kick, Cr.High Kick, Hadouken ( Regular Or Ex)

(Jump) High Kick, Cr.Low Punch, Cr.Mid Punch, Cr.Mid Punch, Cr.Mid Kick, Hadouken ( Regular Or EX) 2nd option Hurricane Kick Low, then follow up with another combo.

Have Fun.

combo 3 works? are you sure

theyre pretty simple combos people have been using but idk if 3 works

See the youtube-vid I just posted here earlier, this guy has all Ryu’s combos down.

Since I’ve had extensive practice with Ryu since September because my school was fortunate enough to have an SF4 arcade machine, I’d like to include some of these combos after Focus Attack crumple. This is in the case that you don’t have ultra/super. I’ll only include the ones you should do for maximum damage because the more hits you do, the more it scales and damage scales A LOT in this game.

Easy:
FA crumple -> dash forward -> st.fp -> shoryu/hurricane kick

Intermediate:
FA crumple -> dash forward -> forward+fp -> shoryu

Advance:
FA crumple -> dash forward -> forward+fp -> cr.lp -> cr.fp -> shoryu/hurricane kick
FA crumple -> dash forward -> forward+fp -> cr.mp -> cr.fp -> shoryu/hurrican kick (this seems to be character specific)
FA crumple -> dash forward -> forward+fp -> st.mk -> shoryu/hurricane kick

I guess I can go into match-ups a little. I’ll just include the ones Ryu has trouble against.

Sagat vs Ryu: Hard match-up for Ryu or anyone for that matter. Just have to get in on him and don’t get caught in the fire ball war because Sagat WILL win that.
**
Boxer vs Ryu**: again, hard match-up because Boxer’s cr.jabs have insane priority and his pokes are longer than Ryu’s just enough to punish if you whiff. Boxer’s j.hk have a weird hit box to it too and sometimes trades/stuffs everything you throw out unless you throw out early cr.hp or shoryu. Ryu’s cr.mp can beat most of Boxer’s pokes.

**Zangief vs Ryu **: st.rh and cr.mk are your main pokes against him. If gief jumps in, do shoryu or st.rh. BE AWARE OF THE RANGE OF HIS EX GREEN HAND It is punishable on block. Don’t throw fireballs blindly from mid-screen.

Blanka vs Ryu: this match-up is all about patience, but could probably go for rush down at the beginning. When blanka has ex meter, it’s almost impossible to cross him up or throw fireballs. Just have to wait for blanka to make a mistake. Cr.mp will beat a lot of his pokes.

I’ll probably record some Ryu stuff over the weekend and my friend will record some Boxer, and I’m too sleepy to continue writing. Hope this helps some people get started.

Btw, EX fireball juggles after dp. =P

hehe, really? I found it easy. :looney:

These trials are pretty fun and showed me some combos i didn’t attempt to try before because the machine at my school was .75 cents a pop grrr…oh well.
