Ryu General Discussion Thread: Frame Data, Strategies, Combos, etc

I drop a lof stuff too of course but those 2 stick.
Also Focus attack - Crumble , I do F+HP xx Shoryuken most of the time. Simple cos F+HP - cr.lp - cr.hp xx (ex) Hurricane get stuffed ALL the time , coz people are mashing dp ( or similar ) and often the manage to get one out if theres lag ,i so i totally dropped this combo too.

just a little question:

i have always played as ryu in the past street fighter games, he is my favourite.
but i come across good ryu players (the ones with the grey ryu face icon)
and i know i will never be able to use ryu like them.

i can’t use/get used to fadc and ultras.
i hate them, i cant use them at all.

should i try and find a new main character or can ryu be used without his ultra?

i used to like akuma a lot on previous games but he is just too weak now.
you cant get in a tussle with him at all anymore.

DP xx FADC, ultra (or very similar variation) is a very common input for SF4 so it’s worthwhile practicing until you can get it down. Otherwise if you really hate it then you might want to try a charge character.

Of course there are several ways to land Ryu’s ultra without FADC’ing into it, but obviously you’re better off if your execution isn’t holding you back.

cr.mp has a little more range than cr.fp.

when characters wake-up in this game, they have this weird thing where they push you out a little. try it, knock a guy down, walk as close as you can before they get-up, stand there and than walk towards them again. you’ll notice you get pushed out a little on their wake-up.

as for cross-ups, this isn’t traditional street fighter in that aspect. when you cross them up, you land too far behind them due to how jumps work in this game and the game doesn’t have enough knockback from hits to compensate for that, hence part of the reason for dp combos. play any other street fighter and cross-up, you see’ll the difference in how much the other guy is pulled into you when you cross them up. so to get the max number of hits, you want to land as deep as possible into them without crossing them up. though most times cross-ups are a lot better and safer.

Hey I need some help with bnb combos.

Example
c.lk, c.lp, c.mp, xx hado or c.lp, c.fp. xx tatsu

I connect all the string up until the last move input and either nothing comes out, or the moves comes out late and gets blocked.

Should I be using fierce punch for the special move?

Maybwe just need to do it a little faster? I think the last move on both of those are cancels. Nothing and you’re too fast, blocked and it’s too slow

What do you guys think of using this combo after a crossup ?

c.lk,c.lp,c.mp,c.hk

I think yes.

I’ve problems between c.mp and c.hk. I’t doesnt work always cos the timing is realy heavy.

Quick question that has probably been addressed already, but the search turned up no results…

Practicing my links today and I noticed something strange, when doing the following combo: f.Mp, c.Lp, c.MpxxEx.Tatsu
Dan(training dummy) would always seem to glitch out of the ex.Tatsu. The combo would go fine till then, but after a couple hits into the tatsu he just kinda falls out of it instead of being flung across the screen and I’m left spinning as the tatsu’s animation completes… Anyone know what’s up with this?

Better to just take the knockdown from Hk Tatsu I guess, but I’m still curious what’s causing it.

yeah, its safe on hit. not the best though. Peraonlly, I’d change it to c.lk, c.lp, c.lp… this is the combo I always start with. basically gives you a LOT of options, If its blocked you can cross-up again, f.mp will reach from the distance, you can throw, or, of course, if its hit, just finish with a c.mk FB (EX preferrably)

Much appreciated; I knew I remembered someone else talking about ex.tatsu glitching out, but I thought it was in this thread.

Still not sure why they won’t get hit again even after the combo drops, as Ryu is still kicking when it happens… I suppose it’s just some strange property of falling out of it.

Funny thing about this ( when playing online ) as that I usually get DP`d out of it when it drops.They never give up hope\mashing those online players :stuck_out_tongue:
Not saying this is all players , but more often than not , ill be hit out of it.

Annoying thing when it drops , might seem like a natural thing to patch in the future , or change in upcoming incarnations.

Ive found that if you knock someone down and do the overhead (f.mp) while there still knocked down then when they actually get up do a crouching attack it usually works

is it possible to do a light hurricane kick (or any level) into a shoryuken? I do this with Akuma and I’m wondering if it’s possible with Ryu. I’m not at home where I can try it :stuck_out_tongue:

Nope, that is a link that only Akuma has.

I do this rarely, but you are just asking for an ultra. sf4:no meaties remember?

Youre better of using that move in your footsie game really.
