Ryu General Discussion Thread: Frame Data, Strategies, Combos, etc

The prima guide says you can’t do 2n1 in a chain combo (and I’ve read this somewhere else) and c.lk, c.lp is a chain not a link. So that’s why I’m confused. It seems like a cancel when I do it, but the frame data and the guide say it’s not.

This was written on another thread.

Once again, thx for the explanation Sargoth.

Last night I pulled off Ryu’s jab dp -> Ultra for the first time outside of training mode (same skill player match).

Felt sooooooooo good.

Now I need to do it like 1000000 times more in training mode…ugh…

Sorry to suck and to not read the whole thread, but could someone tell me what all the abbreviations mean? Stuff like Fierce dp… I can guess what c.mk is I think (Crouch Medium Kick?). The ones that really confuse me are SADC (focus cancel…?) and xx… if someone could tell me or show me a list where they all are I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

GREAT guide for Ryu.

SADC (saving attack dash cancel), same as FADC - an FA is called an SA in japan, i think.

xx is a canceled normal into special or cancelled special into super

Check the sf4 wiki for all the naming conventions

I have a question regarding Ryu’s J.HK…If perform far enough (where the tip of his toe hit the opponent), is it punishable? I realize when I try to AA with SRK or c.HP, it doesn’t hit him and his toe would smack my Ryu in the face.

I also wonder, Does Ken’s J.HK have priority over Ryu’s J.HK?..(Or should I ask this question to Ken’s forum…?)

Thanks!

I believe in the cases where you try to anti-air and you either trade or take the hit, you started the AA too late.

Which is why sometimes its better to go for the safe uppercut that you know will trade…keeps you on the ground so you have the advantage.

hi guys, i haven’t been catching up to the thread so i’ll just post random crap i thought was strange/new/interesting. i’ll post some more up later when i can.

  1. i don’t know why, but if you do c.strong, c.fierce, ex hurricane kick in the very corner, the ex hurricane kick “uncombos”. if the opponent is mashing, they can actually reversal DP you into the corner. just do two strongs instead if you only have 25% meter, but hurricane kick does more damage than any other EX option. (if you srk FADC and no ultra, just ex hurricane if you can)

  2. this combo works on el fuerte so it’ll probably work on most fatties:

c.strong, c.fierce, fireball fadc c.strong, c.fierce, ex hurricane -> ultra. out of all the 75% (or even 100%) meter combos, i think this does the most damage.

on shotos, you have to skip the second c.strong and go for c.fierce right away

  1. FA counts as 2 hits on your combo meter to calculate pro-rating and combo damage. i don’t know why. however, f+hp counts as 1 hit. in most cases where you are going to end a stun combo into ultra, do a jumpin combo rather than an FA combo because it’ll do more damage.

  2. ALL and EACH hits of the ultra is affected by the prorating so you want the least # on the combo meter for maximum damage

  3. i dont know if this was posted or not after poongkko match vids, but you can fierce super after any hit short hurricane kick

  4. if you DP before zangief’s ultra animation, it’ll DP it clean. just remember to FADC cause i always forget.

wheeee. oh yeah there are some cool stuff with the ultra too. wheeee!

  1. is a great tip. Better stop doing those FA crumbles combos when I stun my opp.

Thx

I’ve decided to change my style up a bit to make up for my lack of technical skill. I’ve realized that comboing into Strong is so much easier for certain combos it makes an excellent substitute in clutch moments.

For example: Instead of Dashing Fierce, C.Jab, C.Fierce, Roundhouse Hurricane Kick I can do…

Dashing Fierce, S.Strong, Roundhouse Hurricane Kick or Fierce Shoryuken (if opponent is crouching) It also looks cool because a close Standing Strong looks virtually identical to the Dashing Fierce, so it’s like 3 gut punches.

I’ve gotten quite ticked when I get a free opening to a huge combo and I mess up because I mistime a 2 frame link, costing me a lot of damage. So by reducing my damage output slightly I can still ensure I do decent damage to my opponent.

Shotos Jab-Strong link is probably the easiest (non-Jab-Short) link in the game, it’s almost like a cancel.

But now my other problem is timing the Dashing Fierce after a Level.3 Focus Attack, I always seem to mess up on that. -_-*

i recently had a problem with the FA > f+hp move

what i learned that worked is, as soon as the FA hits, hit the stick 2x to dash…but hold the stick in the direction youre going after the dash, and then simply HP.

anyone have any tips for pulling off the shoryu > fadc > ultra from the 1p side? i can do it all day from the right side, its pretty much impossible the other way…

where are you messing up? is it the fadc or the ultra? if it’s the ultra, due to how the wrist is formed, most people do not make complete quarter circles from 1p side.

try emphasizing the motion; even do db, d, df, f x 2 for the ultra. should come out more consistently, and TAKE YOUR TIME. you actually have a lot of time to do the motion so don’t hurry it too much.

its the ultra motion i have trouble w/ . everytime i do it, an EX shory comes out…sometimes i can pull off the ultra, but itll miss.

That is awesome to know…

Classic problem. The cause is usually due to pressing PPP too early. As in just relax a bit. Or doing it too early after the dash , motions might overlap etc
I remember from ST , doing 3 quarter circles would almost never give you a super , and almost always a dp instead.

Bottom line , relax it a bit more. Start off by doing it REALLY late , so late that you miss , then gradually do it faster until your comfortable with it. In training mode :stuck_out_tongue:

i was messing around in training mode, and i found that you can control the speed of shinku hado just as you would do with his regular hados. jab shinku is crawling speed whereas fierce is like a bullet speed!

what should i do if im actually srk+fadc+ultra to fast and the ultra flies out before opponent even starts to fall lol -_-

back dash instead ofdashing forward

sorry uwoner but you’re talking shit lol, if you dashback it wont hit anymore. + the other thing you posted is common sense.

@ yakisoba

try to take it chilly I had the same problem, I just started to FADC, Dash - wait a bit you have time - ultra. That was on pad now im learning a stick and im doing horrible on 1p side x_x

umm. why dont you try before you call me out? i have the same prob and that’s how i got ultra to land… back dashing does work :stuck_out_tongue:
