i think its good to have both rushdown and keep away elements in your team to be more versatile. Sometimes you just cant rush in against people who know how to evade or defend. Also if you are good at keep away you can time out x-factors then they will be SOL when its over. when i play keep away i try to make it look like im capable of rushing down so you dont look too submissive. for example, 2 disruptors then a tri jump, if they block the tri jump attack back up again disruptor.
I’m at both ends of the spectrum. Hulk is my point on my rushdown team and Rider is my point on my keepaway.
The thing about playing keepaway, at least to me, is you gotta frustrate your opponent. Take Hawkeye & Arthur for instance. They don’t just stand there and fire weapons at you (at least the smart ones don’t.) They’re always on the move, mostly in the air, making sure to cut off all routes that you can use to get to them. The point is to chip, but there’s also an alternate. If you do manage to get close, 9/10 you’'re mashing any & every button to start a combo. Meaning you’re not thinking about blocking their incoming attack (ie: Hawkeye’s slide), giving them a free combo to take off more health, and gain more distance to rinse & repeat. Patience is key, and lack of it can lead to your whole strategy getting blown up along with your team.
Can’t believe this is even a topic in the game we’re in. AKA: Ultimate Marvel Rush down 3, where keep away is not rewarded in the slightest.
On top of that there are few good characters truly capable of keep away. Projectile game yes, but being able to consistently keep away aggressive players intent on getting in? Nope.
Arthur & Hawkeye are about it. With Arthur being less than useless for a great variety of reasons(where do i begin?), and Hawkeye cracking like a cheap dollar store cup once he is cornered.
Deadpool has an excellent keepaway game as well. Tons of tricks to run away. Keepaway works, but it’s significantly less strong after UMVC3 due to Haggar’s assist being nerfed, and it wasn’t particularly strong in the first place, just hard knockdown off Haggar was outrageous.
