Rufus Strategy/Combo Thread (because you can't poke forever...)

Old news for everyone probably but I couldn’t find it mentioned at the front page, and i don’t think it’s practical during a game. But I noticed you can cancel EX.Mess after HP

I found it fun to do DK > S.LK > S.LK > S.HP > EX.Mess FADC Ultra in training just cause you can :slight_smile:

Got a quick question:

It’s something I’ve always wondered about, what situations for what AA? Specifically s.HP vs c.MP, I almost always use s.HP, but I’m assuming there’s some situations where c.MP is better. Is it just a case of reactions? (i.e you react slightly late, so rather than trade with s.HP you sit your ass down and c.MP) Or is there a better more concrete reason to do it? (does c.MP beat ambiguous crossups?)

Anti air situations:

R= Rufus
O= Opp

st.HP or st.MK (to a degree) If opp is jumping at you from far away (that is not right avobe you) , for example:

EX Snake Strike If opp is jumping at you and is high above you, example: (cr.mp also works here)

cr.MP If opp is jumping at you and is above you but not by much, like:

Opp is trying to cross you up while you are not on wake-up or with little blockstun, like

  • Here EX snake strike works but only if you are fast enough to react, sometimes I just prefer to use jumping neutral HP because it hits from both sides*

So thats basically what I use, against cross-ups when Im knocked down I just block or backdash because the angle is weird and its not sure youll hit the opp. So i you really want to escape a crossup attempt, try EX messiahas a reversal, it wont hit the opp but it will get you out of there (BE CAREFULL, characters with supers/ultras/Pokes/specials that have long reach can punish this, like Ryu with super/ultra, or Gen Mantis super or mantis ultra and a lot more). Regular lp SS works fine against cross-ups when your opp has a high jump arc like fuerte or chun-li. Against C.Vipers flamekick cross.ups just focus and backdash or cr.mp (it beats flamekick, always)

Another note about s.hp is it beats out dictator’s s.hk from the right range (far). You can do c.mp if you’re a little closer. I’ve seen some rufus players get scraped by dictator’s hk.

Am I the only one that thinks Rufus vs Blanka is 6-4 in Blanka’s favour?

My usual get in your face style with Rufus seems to be completely punishable by Blankas array of Electricity/Upballs/Ultra etc…

Am I missing something here?

A person who plays Blanka point out to me that only Blank’s EX reversal options on wakeup have invul startup. Normal electricity, normall upball, they all have non-invul startup. So you can meaty him with dive kicks as long as you don’t think he’s going to EX the reversal. (Or before he can EX reversal)

Obviously don’t meaty when he has super/ultra up as those will beat you. Be wary of crossing him up as well, since SF4’s auto correct will flip his super/ultra the right way and still hit you.

Get good at punishing all horizontal balls with c.FP. For vert balls, FA then punish.

Punish all electricities with EX Tornado. If you don’t have EX tornado I’d honestly just back off and reset. c.MK is supposed to beat electricity, but EX tornado is by far the safest and easiest way to beat it.

If Blanka is hopping around and crossing you up, either roll out from under him after he jumps over, or if you have a good angle you can EX snake strike him.

I dunno why, but c.MP is not a reliable AA against him at all. s.FP and close s.MP sometimes work but I wouldn’t risk the tradeoff of eating a combo versus 1 hit from you.

Apart from that it’s just knowing his tricks and not eating his random ultra/super.

All good - don’t forget that, besides FA’ing, dashing, then throwing Blanka as he lands out of a rainbow ball, you can block it and jump hk to EX snake strike or ultra.

It kinda evens out once you know some combos and punish options… Rufus can punish Blanka pretty danged harshly for mistakes, moreso than Blanka can without Ultra. Once you know how to punish, it becomes an even matchup again, though you have to be on your toes all the time.

Mind you, a bit of online lag turns the match in Blanka’s favor, because it becomes harder (or impossible) to punish stuff like vertical balls… And the slower pace means that it’s also easier for Blanka to punish YOU.

All the lag in the world won’t stop you from punishing a blocked Blanka ultra with J.HK-Ultra, though.

does the cl.mp > hp GT really connect? i cant seem to make it hit or is it character specific? i use pc

Why is it difficult for me to do this??? So difficult i’ve never done it.

I don’t see how it’s more difficult than any other cancel. Just go into training mode and practice, practice, practice.

Otherwise, be more specific with your problem, if it’s like you posted in the other thread, you need to hold forward after executing QCF in order to connect with Galactic Tornado.

I got it, the holding forward after executing qcf was the key.

Theres something you need to have in your mind against zangief: DONT GET CLOSE

dont try to pressure, dont rushdown. Just poke and runaway, anti air him, if he hits you with normal green hand, thats a free throw for you, the same if you block the EX one. The main problem with Rufus players (including myself) is that they are so used to rushdown, that they forgot zangief can own them for free if they do that. So, just play safe, build meter (youre gonna need it) and always runaway

i havent seen rufus players do this so i thought i would post it. basically towards the end of a round. if you have 3 meters andyou like try to reversal messhiah and its blocked fadc it then right after the dash tri jump. this works so much its not funny. so uhh just thought i would post it.oh and sorry if its been posted already

when it says dive kick blocked then a follow up, can i do that stuff if i connect, like the

sure, you can even mix it up and go for another dive kick, throw, overhead kick or just block if you feel theyll DP you

are there 2 in 1’s for rufus. like ryus cmk - hado. also idk if im just blind but where are the bnb’s. what moves can i do, or even repeat to get consistent pressure besides the dive kick mixups
