LK> s.HP is 100% interruptable on block. s.HP has a 6 frame start up and LK is only +3 on block.
This is generally a GOOD thing, since it means that the mix up that Justin used has its own in-built mind game- if they try to pre-emptively tech a throw after the s.LK or try to jump after blocking the s.LK, they will get hit and comboed.
The only problem is that anyone with an invincible reversal who mashes it while blocking s.LK WILL blow through your s.HP or throw attempt. This again, isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since there’s a good chance they’ll mess up and get comboed AND even if they did blow through, the damage taken is fairly low. So the risk reward is still in your favour. With Ryu, the worst case scenario is that he blows through with a DP> FADC ultra, which isn’t too bad. So against Ryu, its a risk worth taking, at least some of the time.
The only time when trying to mix up with s.LK> throw and s.LK> s.HP> Tornado is clearly a bad idea is when you’re up against a Sagat with Ultra and 2 meters stored. Getting hit by Tiger uppercut> FADC> f+HK> Ultra just does waaaay too much damage to make the risk worth taking (versus the reward of connecting with a s.HP> Tornado).
I believe this is why Kindevu normally does s.HP> Tornado off his dive kicks against Sagat players. (If you watch all his recent matches, he very rarely does s.LK>s.HP> Tornado). The window to mash out a DP is much smaller if you just do dive kick> s.HP> Tornado versus if you do dive kick> s.LK> s.HP> Tornado.
very great comment, i just realized that while watching all of Kindevu’s matches.
as for the fragrance palm issue, its just like Yun’s in third strike= meaning hits both sides, wide hitbox, and instant knockback.
however it won’t come out fast enough on wakeup if a shoto were to cross up, unless that opponent messes up his timing, and even if fragrance palm DID come out while the opponent was crossing up im pretty sure it’d whiff seeing as how rufus takes a wide step forward [like Yun in 3s]
cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lp > EX Galactic Tornado. I land it about 2% of the time. It combos (sick damage), but I just cannot grasp the timing or what I’m doing differently the times I actually land it and the times that it doesnt all combo.
It is still effective because people let the game block for them sometimes and get sucked in, or they try to punish and get sucked in… I also get people try to mash something inbetween the suction and when Roofie throws that devastating palm into their face. It would just be nice if i could land it consistently and not have to pray that my opponent is getting greedy or lazy.
Anyone have any tips on getting this timing down? Any idea what im doing wrong?
Maybe I’ll post a video later.
Oh, and to those talking about FacePalm (what i like to call it). I use it on a cornered opponent at max distance, nobody ever suspects it. It is especially effective for me when the opponent is getting up from being grounded. They either jump or try to do something to psych you out that’ll let them get outta there and it stuffs most of that. So far the worst thing thats happened is that I threw it out there late and a ryu jumped in and kicked me in the face, then comboed into shoryuken. It was my error. Otherwise the worst thing was that they blocked, i wept and then baited a jump in so i could snakestrike > ultra.
SF4 is different from lets say 3S where you can chain cr.lk x3 and super (with ken) here you can also chain them but the last hit should be linked (that is, wait for cr.lp to fully recover, then cr.lp xx EX tornado)
I’d also like to make mention of this new Rufus tactic that seems to be taking over in Japan.
Against Sagats, it looks like a lot of Rufus’ go for dive kick into target combo a lot (even without Ultra). I can only assume it’s because linking s.lk to HP against Sagat is risky and because target combo cannot be interrupted with SRK.
In this sense, if Sagat attempts to SRK after a s.lk he should get hit by the second part, right? From there, Rufus can follow into another dive kick or other mix-ups.
Another good thing about using dive kick to target combo, perhaps, is that s.lk to HP link will now be safer if they are expecting the target combo.
Have you guys noticed the trend and what do you think about it?
Yeah, I was just about to post about it in the videos thread and its an absolute mystery to me why it works.

Viewers note: This isn’t some scrub tournament. Its the 3rd/4th placing match in a tournament where the finalists are Daigo AND Mago.
No. This is the part I don’t understand.
There is NO reason for a Sagat not to spam Tiger uppercut if you think the opponent is spamming target combo.
Target combo is punishable on block with Tiger Uppercut.
If the Rufus tries to do more than stand light kicks, he can be uppercutted between them.
If you spam SRK after the s.lk and the opponent continues with the target combo, you will be stuck in blockstun, and will automatically block the s.HK… after which you can SRK to punish it.
What’s more confusing is that Kirisuto only does this against Sagat. Against Ryu, he does tornado combos (and he even does s.LKX2> s.HP> Tornado against Daigo in the same tournament… mad props). So he’s definately not some scrub player who lucked out by spamming target combo. He knows what he’s doing…
I’m just mystified. Either the Japanese know something the rest of the world doesn’t know, or Japanese Sagats are just too proud (translation= stupid) to spam Tiger uppercut on block.
Its the same thing when Japanese Sagats don’t punish Kindevu after blocking a roundhouse Messiah Kick… I don’t understand what’s up with that either.
I am even more confused because I am pretty sure he can tag in a dive kick to connect after the target combo ( I think this stands sagat up and doesnt allow the knock down).
-_-
That LK>MP>HP toranado is character specific.
You can do it to some characters only while they are crouching and some characters at all times.
Ok, so Im still not getting this f*cking combo down. I decided to record (do they still call it that?) a video. Its a little long and the quality is not great but the editing capabilities of the iPhone are very limited, and thats all i got to work with.

There are a bunch of other random things in the video too (actually most of the video became me dicking around) but you’ll see what im doing and you can hear me press the buttons, so you’ll hear the timing too. Sometimes you’ll hear me press jab jab jab jab EX but the EX wont come out. I am assuming that that is because im pressing EX too soon (which would have made it a cancel in the 3s days), I do that a bunch of times. Am I too quick? too slow? i dont get it.
If you mash Tiger Uppercut after blocking the first hit of any Messiah Kick, you will beat HK and MK follow ups in their start up (i.e., you’ll out prioritise the HK follow up).
The only option Rufus has that can beat, trade with a Sagat who mashes uppercut after blocking a Messiah Kick is to do a delayed LK follow up. But that doesn’t explain why Japanese Sagats almost never go for it, since it should at worst be a 50/50 mix up.
First off I don’t even know why you would really want to do this combo. Looking at frame data it looks like c. lp is a 1-frame link, which is what you have to do, link, not cancel (sometimes known as chain) the button presses, aka press too fast, e.g. ~0:36 on that video I think (not sure if you were just doing an angry attempt or something, but most of the input attempts I heard didn’t sound slow/measured enough).
Are you trying to get an analog of something like Dictator’s c.lk x3 xx lk scissors? You may have more success with st. lk x2/3, then cr.lp or far lp xx EX GT.
