Rufus Q&A Thread: Post ALL your questions here!

For the combo cr.lk, st. hp XX GT, I cant seem to link the cr.lk to st.hp. I have a much easier time linking st.lk to st.hp after a divekick.

cr. LK doesn’t link into st. HP. It’s +3 on hit, so you’re best option is to chain into cr. LP and continue the combo from there.

Okay, thanks a lot!

Rufus’s choices after starting with a c.LK just aren’t that great. Unless you have meter for EX GT you won’t get anything good of it.

hey does anyone know how to punish vega flips (PPP… KKK)? i’ve been going to training mode and i set the cpu to mash flips i cant punish them at all D: ! lol help?..

The best thing to remember against Oni is that he can’t fadc his srk on block, so even with meter you can keep the pressure on. If they’re really new to Oni and don’t know then just make sure you punish them hard enough so they don’t forget

Can’t think of much else that would help in this match, if you struggle to block his slash move then just jump as soon as you see one coming and you can use st.lk -> st.mp on him which is handy.

Yeah his flip can be frustrating, if I encounter a Vega that abuses it then I just try and keep the pressure on with divekicks or galactic tornados and back them to the corner.

Roll works pretty well against vega backflips

Vega’s backflips are kinda bad because you can always recover from whatever you did and still have time to punish it with at least a sweep, which gives you the advantage again. The worst he could do if he recovers is EX Scarlet Terror. There’s 10 frames of recovery on the fastest backflip and 8 frames on the slower one I think.

Anyone have any tips for the rose match-up? She’s so difficult to pressure. She beats me on the ground with her pokes and whenever I try to dive kick she can backdash to avoid it and be at an advantage. When I do get on her I have to worry about her reversals as well as her backdash. Is this match supposed to be in Rufus’ favour?

From the match-up thread:

*Here’s your friendly neighbour Dive-man, bringing you more Option Selects, this time vs Rose:

Throw, dash x2, divekick at the peak and OS Ultra 2, what happens if Rose…

  • Blocks: Nothing comes out, free mixup
  • Backdashes: divekick hits her
  • Forward dashes: divekick hits her
  • Regular Soul Throw: Divekick beats it
  • EX Soul spiral: Whiffs. Rufus goes to the other side and does U2 which catches her
  • EX Soul throw: Whiffs. Rufus goes to the other side and does U2 which catches her
  • All versions of Super: Whiffs, Rufus gets behind her but nothing comes out = Free combo
  • Illusion Spark (U1): Whiffs, Rufus gets behind her but nothing comes out = Free combo

Also U2 is very viable in this fight since it stops her zoning game to an extend.

How to know that you did it right?: If rose can EX soul throw you, you’re doing the divekick too late.*

Also…

The Gouken information in that thread is pretty thin. Anyone got any tips? Any decent Gouken is having his way with me.

Anyone? Ehhhhhhhhh?

I posted this a while ago in another thread, the only thing I’d change is that I use U1 now so that I can concentrate solely on getting in on Gouken.

Gouken:

[Match-up Ratio] 5 - 5 (mainly based on my experience as not many top players use Gouken)

[Preferred Ultra] U2 (especially since you can AA his demon flips with it in 2012)

[General Strategy] The best advice for this match-up is simply to be patient. The better Gouken players will zone you right from the start with fireballs and when they get a knockdown will go for safe demon flip pressure. If they don’t do this and stay full screen throwing fireballs then simply push them to the corner ala Guile. The best ways to get around fireball pressure are neutral jumps (forward jump only if your certain it won’t be a vertical fireball), fadc is ok but don’t overuse as Rufus’ forward dash sucks and GT from half screen is good, any further and you can be punished.

On wakeup Gouken has limited options but the ones of note are ex-tatsu which can beat unsafe jump-ins and his parry move which will counter any attack; but most Gouken’s overuse this so bait it out at the start and they should stop. In the 2012 update Gouken received a buff to his Super making it a 3f startup which is also something to be aware of.

As for Rufus’ wakeup Gouken can safe jump with demon flip into st.mp -> cr.hp or st.mp throw frame trap shenanigans so you’ll need to be on point with your throw techs. Also watch out for Gouken’s overhead which has better priority and comes out faster in AE 2012.

[Special Counters] ex gt beats his palm attack. If the Gouken player is directly overhead when he demon flips then st.hp is your best option.

[Punishes] U2 punishes fireballs and demon flip, cr.hp high fireballs.

[Extra Notes] Forward throw, dash twice into cross-up mk works on Gouken, also st.lk -> st.mp works.

Thanks a heap!

I’m having alot of trouble getting the ex messiah - fadc - ultra 1. I can only get it maybe 1 out of 5 times in practice mode. My problem is that the fadc leaves me with so little time to input the ultra. Most of the time the ex snake comes out instead as I have to mash it. I’ve tried doing the fadc inputs earlier to get more time but it isn’t working for me. I find that tapping forward forward then ultra is seriously tricky for me.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can definitely hit the :lk: follow-up and FADC pretty early and that should help. In fact, if you’re having trouble with the timing that’s probably the solution.

Yeah you can FADC almost instantly out of the high follow-up. Once your hands get used to the motion you’ll find you actually have lots of time to input the ultra.

Trying to understand the Sagat match a little more. I’ve heard the cross up dive kick on Sagat is punishable even on hit, so why isn’t Sanford doing anything? Also, why does he NEVER DP on wake-up when Wong is clearly jumping in? Is there something I’m missing?

[media=youtube]zDg_Z_EjkOA[/media]

Sagat’s uppercut is 5 frames which makes it very easy to safe jump. Also, even the highest blocked divekicks are safe from dp, let alone on hit. Again, due to the relatively long startup.

The 5 frame Tiger Uppercut makes sense, and I guess I’ll just work on my timing with that (which is what I should do yeah?). But in the match-up thread it says that the cross-up dive kick is not safe against Sagat, even on hit. Is that just misinformation?
