Just had the most complimentary set of messages I’ve received in any fighter. SF community really is the warmest.
I dunno what the hell this Harlem Shake business is about, but that poor laundry machine.
PS4 games price range: $0.99 to $60.00.
Making PS4 games effectively cheaper than PS3 or 360 games.
Also, Dan:

PS4 will support 4K resolution video and photos. . .however games not likely.

Hey man,

The logic holds.

SNES games sold for around 70 bucks a piece.

PS1 and other platforms around that time cut that down to 45 per game.

PS2/Dreamcast upped it to 50.

PS3/360 upped it again to 60.

If Sony sticks to their guns, this will be the first time in our lifetimes that a next-gen console does not arbitrarily up the price of it’s games.

Arguably, if Sony were to follow the pricing trend, PS4 games would fall between 65-70 dollars.

Also, consider that current gen games are still selling at 60 new. If this maintains through next-gen launch, PS4 games would be offering more content (considering that initially many games will be made for PS3 and PS4) at the same price point.

where’s the logic? there’s basic statistics here and market analysis and you’re eschewing both in favor of holy cow sony. stats are important because it’s easy for people to spot relatives and even easier to declare trends even when it’s incredibly dumb if you took a second to think of it (rule of 3s). even in your example, your cited trend is snapped right out of the gate. PS1 established the $50 price point due to the use of CDs and the finding of a standard price more acceptable to finding the mass-market compared to SNES, and was part of sony’s initial fight to enter the market (they didn’t just undercut everyone else out of sheer goodness). that stood until 3rd party publishers colluded to raise it at the current gen and the market was ready and willing to accept it. like with blu-ray, they can push their luck and raising msrp but I think 65-70 is too much of a barrier for a mass market number and may drop overall profits. your perceived value for each dollar means nothing here.

.99 to 60 makes nothing effectively cheaper unless you can guarantee variable pricing like steam. this is a range that sounds friendly to the consumer without providing a meaningful median. as dan said on wed. regarding your excitement over sony letting publishers decide on the blocking of used sales, this is again disingenuously telling the consumer what it wants to hear while passing the buck to publishers and subverting reality.

I used the SNES example as a marker for what could be considered as the ‘peak’ pricing for mainstream games.

Also, I did not insinuate that with the PS1 Sony just decided to undercut everyone just to be nice. Yes, technological innovations combined with entering a new market led to the price drop.

Now if you were to actually pay attention to Sony’s pricing structure as of the last 6 months, you could see that they are trying to guarantee variable pricing and establish game tiers. There are many ‘mobile’ games you can download for the Vita, as well as a 5 dollar discount on major downloadable games that you can by in stores for the full 40 dollars. This is also without considering the implementation of Playstation Plus which also adjusts game prices.

Sony has been working towards a strong variable pricing scheme and a broad digital marketplace, I’m not saying that it’s fully fleshed out yet, but I think it will become clearer the closer we get to PS4 launch.

As to the used game issue, it is unclear exactly what they’re doing. The rumor regarding letting publishers decide was based on a patent filed in Japan for some kind of RFID technology. Nothing has been officially declared. Other rumors suggest they may implement an online pass system for used games. . .so cost of used game + 10 dollar activation or something.

And yes I agree that not going over 60 dollars is strategic because consumers would not be receptive to that pricing, however the point stands: We will not be paying more for games than we are now.

Things I learned from jourdal today:
1. Far too many people are playing Azrael at the moment, and far too many of them are comboing into his astral.
2. A fast Noel is terrifying.
3. Hazama’s 6b continues to be the best move in the game.

I’ll host games tonight - can put on anything but I’ve only played Cross lately.
You got those rose colored spectacles wasim lol.
Sony did comment on used games. They will be playable in all forms. They have made a prettu strong stance on backwards compatible games tho. Its not supported in retail or digital. The new architecture is extremely hard to run a backwards game on it (go cell processor). What will lately happen is sony will leave it to devs to reproduce an entire ps4 version of game. Shame sony. Shame.
Dont think I see this variable game market u talk about. They are behind the curve in this. Xbox was using this modrl once they made xbox arcade relevant. I do not expect any ps4 game to not be 60 bucks for a good amount of time. Mobile games being cheaper isnt a step forward. Thats just how it is now. And im calling it now. Whatever is thr flagship ps4 game. I bet its marked at 65.
what happened to the talk of streaming ps3 games? i was planning to stream sf4 while playing online while streaming the footage over ps4.

are mobile games really cheaper anyway? $40 is a pretty high going-rate to base lower prices off of in the mobile space.

The 40 dollar mark I mentioned is for retail Vita games, not like actual mobile type games, those dont hit 40.
as to backwards compatibility, its no surprise that that cant be a thing anymore. In all honesty how long can we reasonably expect that to happen?
Look I have no illusions about Sony’s positioning/pricing/marketing despite what you guys think. You guys are just looking at this wrong.
We can all agree that one of Sony’s biggest problems is their traditional inability to adapt to consumer culture/demand. They seem to always be one step behind of competitors due to a lack of focus.
With the PS4 it seems as if Sony is making steps towards a more reasonable console than what the PS3 was. Ditched the cell processor. Contracted AMD for a unified CPU/GPU architecture. Incorporating more social features. Increasing the amount of RAM. Some support for 4K resolution. Understanding that ppl have friends.
These are all positive steps.
You guys are coming at this with the wrong metrics. You’re analyzing Sony as if it were a market leader this generation, when in fact it was a kind of failure.
Everything they’ve shown so far are positive steps coming from a losing position.
Yeah they got some problems still, but the PS4 looks like a positive step forward generally.
Best of luck to all Rochesterians who are attending WB. Stay cool in pools and then make some racket … in the brackets.
