Personally, I liked the issue. I mean, big  for making it in black and white (but then again, that’s probably cost issues. I mean, maybe 150 people in the world have heard of Rival Schools and like 55 of those people actually play it.), but not bad.
One suggestion though: Please, PLEASE don’t have the characters directly mention game terms like “Burning Vigor” or “Team-up move”. That sounded all kinds of retarded. It’s like when Nightwolf said “Use your Animality” in the second Mortal Kombat movie.
Inputting the motion for Batsu’s Zenkai Kiai Dan (Super Guts Bullet) when he did it was a nice touch.
Also, can we please have Rey give the characters pupils in their eyes? The rest of the art is good, but pupilless eyes are all kinds of freaky.
Overall though, good read. I’ll be picking up issue 2, which will probably center on Gedo’s intro (and then issue 3, which will probably be Gorin and 4 would be either Pacific or Justice Gakuen, am I right?)
Also, before you bash UDON’s handling of Rival Schools, go read what Dreamwave wanted to do to Rival Schools and Darkstalkers (like making Morrigan a witch…)
Waitaminute, you lost me. I can understand that you don’t feel for the comic, but comparing it to actual manga is like comparing to apples and oranges
The manga Trigun especially can sometimes make your eyes hurt(in a bad way) trying to make out all of action in a fight scene.
The fight scenes in SF,DS, and RS(being the longest) are very well illustrated and detailed in what the games potray. The story might be boring without them anyway. In manga, We get the collection of fight scenes in one dense book here, while the guys on the eastern world gets 14pgs weekly which drags a fight on making u not even care for it after reading it for 3 months later and the same characters are still fighting(DBZ).
As for RS being BW is kind of a low blow. This was old news anyway(more than three months old) everyone knew by now that it was going to be black & white. Most indie comics are like that anyway because one thing:
If you want you’re comic in color, it’ll cost ya extra $$$ per page at the printers
So if you read manga anyway, why does it bother you so much that its in black & white?
I really enjoyed this. The art was definately a step up from the back up story’s, but at the same time it felt really restrained compared to Rey’s other books (Sharknife, Peng!). I don’t really mind though, in fact I think it might actually help the book overall. I loved Sharknife, but a lot of people complained about being unable to follow the first few fights scenes, I don’t think that’ll be an issue with this.
The price surprised me though. I thought it was supposed to be $3, and that the decision to print it in B&W was made to help keep the cost down due to it being a double sized book. Will it always be $5 or was that a one off deal for the first issue?
The book is set at 4.95 retail. Reason is very simple and straight forward - orders of RS is only at 1/3 of SF. We cannot do the book unless the price is higher. And we make the book a 48 pager instead of the shorter regular color book.
Fight scenes not as detail as Dragon Ball? Well, we do not have the luxury of a 2 issue span 400 page fight.
Why is Shonen Jump 5 bucks with 200 plus page and we cannot do it with Rival Schools? Coz everything in Shonen Jump are reprints of stuff already printed and made back all the money in Japan already. Jump is used as a promo tool to give people a sampling of what VIZ has to offer in manga volumes. They are not original contents made.
For those who likes what we have done on RS 1, myself, Rey and crew did work very hard to capture the right feel for the book. Thanks for your support.
No offence but You may have noticed the comic is called Street Fighter not Street tea party And these comics are based on Fighting games not RPGs. Besides most Kung Fu films follow a similar premise and even the comics you mentioned.
just saying is all.
Looking forward to Rival Schools hitting shelves down under. I’m a big fan of Rey’s underground Graff art style.
Anyway, regardless of it being in black and white, I thought it looked pretty damn good. Well done! $5 isn’t a great deal, but yeah it is more than most books. BUT, the way I see it, considering Udon don’t keep to a monthly deadline much, $5 every…say 5-8 weeks is alright.
One thing I must say:
I loved the inclusion of that Narutard. It was hilarious! That really made me laugh. I also found it more funny due to the fake Konoha Leaf symbol on the forehead protector/hitai-ate. Just found that funny.
The b/w art doesn’t look bad or anything to me. I liked the move motion thing Rey has going on. I thought storywise it could have set up the whole direction a bit better instead of going for a fight immediately.
For a first issue I think its important to set up who the characters are and what their roles will be in the series. We get a the idea that there are kidnappings, but I think sicne this is what the plot will be wrapped around, some more details on it and why the characters care are important.
I’ve been reading comic books since the 90s and that was my favorite ERA because of the apocalypse saga, wolverine saga, x-men saga, superman, batman, captain america, etc. The 90s was the best comic era for me compare to today now. since i read and own many comic books in COLOR, i expect to read my comic books in COLOR. Manga is a different story cause i didnt get into it until 2001, but i gotten used to the black and white color that manga produces. Comic books cause more than manga’s today with shorter pages too, so if your paying a price tag of $3.50 for a 20pg comic book, it better be in color atleast. Mangas a different story cause of the fact that each manga series always come out with over 50pgs. So paying $10 is not a bad deal at all compare to comic books now. besides, mangas are funnier too and more badass.
damn, you got me alright, but marvel comics fight scene back in the 90s wasnt bad compare to today. nowdays, we dont even get to see a good wolverine vs. spider-man fight anymore.
most of you guys here act like Rival School #1 was perfectly made and perfectly introduce. the story didnt grab my attention because the whole issue just show batsu fighting hayato. Was that suppose to leave an impression on me to buy the next issue? no it didnt, because once again, they went straight into a fight scene and ignore the storyline. when the onslaught saga came out, i was always excited about the next issue because i didnt know what onslaught was going to do or who he was going to fight next. its like that exciting feeling you get when your NFL team keeps advancing in the playoffs and they keep getting closer and closer to the superbowl.
introduction of a character is important, but the way how rival school characters were introduce was freakin horrible. you just dont show up, beat the crap out of someone, and say “welcome to taiyo high school” or go like, “wow he strong, i must be careful of him cause he will own me in the near future”. the reason why i like alot of Naruto charactes is because their so well told and it gives their character life. never in an anime have i like almost all of naruto’s character. for crying out loud, i just want a darn good storyline for god sake.
though i will give Udon credit for not having so many advertistment in the Rival School #1 and that it was 40pgs long.
batsu is hayato’s favourite student .
because hayato likes people who are energetic , active and high in confident .
so i haven’t read yet , what’s the reason for hayato fighting with batsu ?? training and teaching?? batsu lates for school ? (hayato always wait at the gate before school starts) or basicly hayato wants batsu to show him what batsu got ?
visit snowstorm’s RSnetwork , for relevence at the profile page . and also go to the event page for interesting stuff ( try not to visit the forum… )
Being a MASSIVE RS fan I was kinda dissapointed with this.
I love Rival Schools, ever since the PSX game was released, the characters the story and especially Kyosuke.
I bought the Capcom Summer Special 2004 with the preview Rival Schools chapter in it and was amazed, Natsu vs Hideo in all colour and beautiful artwork. I just simply couldn’t wait for the first comic.
We were told on the official site it was slated for January 06, after waiting so long after that my pre-ordered comic finally comes to me.
The artwork seems nothing like that of the preview (originally done by Omar Dogan now done by Rey) with tiny eyes, no colour and don’t even get me started on that horrible full page drawing of Kyosuke, his face just looks…wrong.
I will still be buying this just to see how Udon do the story and if they stay faithful to the games, but for now my RS doujinshi will stay on the top of my reading shelf.
But there were some great things in the comic, I really loved the fact that they actually used launchers and air combo’s in matches and what I think was a “Tardy counter” though not actually said in the comic.
Edge and Akira looked very cool though, I am looking forward to how they introduce Gorin Kokou and Pacific High and whether they’ll be putting in Seijyun Jogakun and characters like Kurow or doing a second series for the Justice gakuen game. And if supporting characters like Kiri and Mari Nanase will make an appearance.
The lack of advertisements was also great, generally I am pleased that RS is just getting more recognition, overall I guess it was a good job done.
thedude.com: Hayato is whacking his weaker students and Batsu says “looks like he’s encouraging us to challenge him!” Batsu then throws a punch at Hayato.
my god that was lame …
conversation and lines between a enthusiatic burning spirited teen and a hot blooded teacher should be like this .
batsu walks in to hayato’s direction and yelled stoutedly , " hey that’s interesting . YO ! Teach’ , i suggest you give im’ a break . now my turn, so bring it ! osu !! "
hayato focused and looked at batsu’s eyes that filled with enthusiasm and furious spirit .
hayato : " excellent , you’re the kind of youth i’ve been expecting in the new 1st year batch , this is not gonna be easy . i’ll start and advance crash course for ya , so how but you just SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT TOUGH BOY !~ IKUZE !
batsu : " heh ! more likely to be simple and straight forward than being easy for this, but i never say easy …especially math and science >_>;;; "
if hayato beats batsu : " do you ever heard quote from a…british boxer ? " you are strong , but your skills are unpolished " , anyway . your fighting skills seems to be a joke , but i’m impressed with ya’ attitude , you made me motivated . FROM NOW ON ! you will start training with me ! we’re gonna start wax on and was off just like Mista-miyagi !! ABAYO ! …batsu-kun "
batsu : " eeeh …that’s weird , miyagi-san ?? is he that school cleaner i saw earlier ?? "
another dumb fact :
batsu DO PLAY fighting game , but he is too over-exaggerative and excited whenever he do a super combo . example if he does a strong-fierce-FB-SA3(ken) , he’ll go : " IKE !!! ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA !!! OSU !! " ^^;;;.
but edge is the best fighting gamer despite he uses the low tier Alex in 3rd strike .
I felt kinda the same, just doesnt seem right. Like you i am also looking forward to see how this pans out, but i really don’t want it to be just character meets character, fight pursues, wash, rinse and repeat.
