Power going out is a strict venue ordeal. there wasnt anything that they couldve have done or tested to see whether it would or not, things happen and it was getting fixed. and it only happened on a fri during team play, team play still ended up finishing on schedule as promised. during saturday and sunday the tourney power issues were resolved.

as far as the lateness, its hard to run anything smoothly if the participants werent always where they needed to be. roll call was called, people said here and some of them decided to go away as the brackets were being made. Lol you cant have a match if you opponent wasnt there right? IMO thats not something we could have controled, even though we had a megaphone and call system in place to find someone that was outside of ear shot. The Mvc3 singles tourney was ran as simplistic and lenient as possible. Shankar, the director, gave late entree’s time to get their proper registration slip, which took extra time and he didnt DQ anyone unless he absolutely needed too. In most majors ive been to (Evo) if your not there and no one knows who you are, you get a boot and handful of pocket lint.

This is outside of my norm, and you’re entitled to you’re opinion, but either you’re trolling or simply ignorant. Everyone involved in this event from the competitors to the sponsors put too much time and effort into Revelations not to address your comments. First and foremost the power issues occured only on Friday (in an isolated area) and were immediately addressed by staff. You say the main focus was on the sponsors, “hello” that was a major theme in this tournament, to focus on the sponsors. Who do you think brought you this pot, and will bring larger pots in the future? The whole idea was wrapped around two themes, a hype tourney and allowing gamers to make money doing what they love. Thats why we did it on E3 weekend to bring as much exposure to the scene, to you guys, as possible and prove to the sponsors that your worth investing in. If you would have read the posts and watched some of the videos you would have known that. The Level|Up Team has done a fantastic job and Shinkara the so called “dick” your mentioning runs one of the most successful brackets week after week at Wednesday Night Fights. It took over a year of planning and negotiating with sponsors and industry folk to provide the large amount of cash and prizes. When you post this on this thread your not only bashing, the sponsors and the players, but your bashing the community itself. If you wanna bash on someone bash on me… not my team, and the sponsors, and everyone involved.

Regardless of our difference in opinion, we are always looking to improve upon our events and the experience in which we provide you. If you have any other issues please contact me directly and I will take your concerns into consideration.

For everyone that enjoyed the tournament and especially to those of you that have grown with us from the beginning, glad you had a great time and we hope to see you again at So Cal Regionals 2 in November.

RE: dude with the microphone, I’m assuming you’re talking about Shankar? His style obviously seems to comes from the Philong Nguyen school of tournament direction and he’s much better for it. I wasn’t a part of mvc3, but I was there and I definitely recognized the work he was putting in to herd the cattle and get people to where they need to be on time. Sorry, but people are way too polite with this in most tournaments and staff like Shankar are exactly what is needed, IMO. Time to get shit done and done on time going forward. Gamers are irresponsible enough so it’s good to have the people on staff at least try to counter that with some discipline instead of bending to the player’s whim all of the time. Go visit an east coast tournament some time and see how things are run. Better yet, you should stay home if your feelings get hurt this easily. Nevermind the tournament staff at that point.

With regards to the other stuff, you can’t do too much about that other than what was already done by the staff. I would say 95% of large scale fighting game tournaments have issues of varying degrees and aren’t perfect, depending on the entrant’s point of view. I can’t say anything from your point of view since I didn’t enter any of the main tournaments, but I had very little issues with my time there.

Overall, the event was great for me between Friday and Saturday when I was there. Only things I didn’t like were food/drink was way too expensive on site and MK started way too late, apparently because they wanted stream time for that game. If the latter is true, then this is complete nonsense. Fuck a stream when it costs time from the actual execution of the tournament. Spectators either should have been here to see if they wanted to see it so bad, or find something else to do…like watch another stream. I hear there was another somewhat large tournament going on elsewhere at the same time with good MK players…

nah, i’ll let you have your opinion on the rest of your post, but dude was a dick. i’m glad i wasn’t part of marvel.

situation 1: team tournament, brackets running off of the internet which was constantly going down. he calls up 3 matches with 8 stations sitting there idle. continues to bitch at the 6 teams as to why they haven’t gotten balls deep into the brackets while he sat there for 15-20 minutes waiting for the brackets to come up online.

situation 2: playing tekken, there are two people getting called to ae that are sitting there playing each other in tourney. i walk kindly across the room, inform dude that these guys are playing tekken. he says, “okay”. walk back across the room to watch, 3 minutes later “if these guys (that i just told him about) aren’t here in 30 seconds, i’m going to disqualify them.”

situation 3: a friend who has been dealing with dude’s shit for friday and a good part of saturday decides to take the high road and sit 5 feet away from the announcer table to he doesn’t have to deal with his bullshit. he gets his name called as dude is yelling on the bullhorn. he goes “i’m right here!” and raises his hand just as his name is called. dude responds with “why the fuck are you here? you should be over there playing your game!”

it was a pretty poorly run tournament, and i’ve gotten some apologies from the staff. shit happens, so i understand that. but treating people like idiots when they are coming out to your event is pretty unprofessional, and cold hearted. maybe people don’t remember how and why old school tournaments were fun… it was because there was enough heart in how the tournament was run and the experience was great because of it. i know there are tons of mindless drones nowadays, but treat people with some respect and you’ll see that people are much more responsive to that than getting cussed out and brow beaten everytime they direct a word in your direction.

For the power, completely understandable as I stated it was a venue issue. For future events the capacity of power must be tested to make sure electrical limits are not being taxed. The issue was resolved on saturday and sunday but this should set a precedent on tournament preparations.

As for lateness, I feel this is an issue with most tournaments, but at revelations I felt as if a 2 and a half hour wait for singles to start was a bit much. I’m interested in seeing how you feel this issue should be tackled. At this point saying that it’s just a problem and not trying to resolve it for future events would not be the most proactive action to take.

As for sponsor focus, I don’t mind them having some sort of spotlight. All the companies involved with revelations were legit and great companies that support the fighting game company. There is something to be said about the flow of the tournament vs ads and such. This part is purely an opinon: I feel there was an oversaturation of product placement which in some sense deterred from the tournament. Take it as you will, I feel a better balance could have been struck.

As for Shinkara he did gather people for the tourney. My suggestion was to maintain a professional attitude while doing so. Making sure that you as a tournament organizer remain neutral when dealing with issues of any entrees is critical. As for the actual organization of matches I felt that people could have constantly been on deck for upcoming games making sure that all consoles were being used in a timely fashion.

In response to agilepoet’s quote about attacking the community, FAR FROM IT. My comment was in response to the tournament and how it was ran. The community is great, and commenting on a tournament having issues is not an attack against the entire community. I would personally like to thank you however for being open to improving your events and taking suggestions, I can say that this is a great step into consistently improving the tournament experience which can always be helped due to it’s large scope.

Finally in response to bernie, your answer is what I expected to hear. His style may be all his own, but when dealing with this many players that have waited over 2 hours to play isn’t the recommended path to take. I can see your take on it being all for fun and this is just how it is. But at 2 1/2 hours into a lot of the players weren’t in the mood to hear what he said. I don’t take away from what he did, and I realize how big the event was, but at the same time if you can’t build on the situation and come up with construtive criticism I suggest you revaulate what you want out of a tournament.

Overall I want to thank you guys for the responses. I phrased my response a little to negatively, but would like to say that I would like nothing more than to see the next event be more successful.

ReveLAtions was definitely a success. I really liked how there were 2 stages, one for Level Up and the other for Offcast.

My only complaints were the venue and hotel accommodations. Obviously these are outside the control of Level Up and Tournament Legacy, but I gotta air it out. First, the catering and food prices at the Proud Bird were just awful. I don’t mind eating poor quality food, but the price simply isn’t worth it. Also, under cooked chicken - FUCK THAT. Second, access to free water needs to be available, especially if the venue won’t allow for outside food and drink. During the entire event, I had to pay for 3 dollar bottles of water and drink free NOS energy drink. The NOS girls are banging, but not so much the drink.

Regarding the hotel, we kept getting accosted by the security about noise complaints. It was really unfortunate that the hotel block wasn’t fully populated by ReveLAtion tournament attendees. We couldn’t even keep a crack open in the door because of the noise of mashing arcade sticks, nor could we even speak at a normal tone late at night.

Hopefully, Tournament Legacy can address some of the issues next time; assuming they can.

The tourney was fun, but I hope they improve the way they run their tournaments in the future.

Here is my feedback.

The NOS sponsorship was really cool, energy drinks, youth, and video games go together really well. I don’t think NOS knows their target audience that well though. The money spent on the cute girls and the nice cars would probably be better spent hosting a gaming station, or even a hand sanitizing station, something that has heavy traffic so the spectators and those waiting in line can refresh themselves with the drinks.

**Blazblue/Guilty Gear/Blazblue/Tekken **- I’m happy they had their own section with their own projector, their community is small but I’m very happy the Revelations organizers supported them.

**The Hitbox station **was really cool and probably received more attention than any other booth.

The Proud Bird’s catering service was really great, the tacos were as good as ever!

Now for a few things I have gripes about.

**Roll call **- What was the deal with this? Its understandable to see who is there and who is not, but there are better and more efficient ways to do things.I’d love to see Keits help out as I recall he ran UFGT like a boss, and from what I hear it was one of the most well organized, large-scale tournaments ever!

Why not post the brackets the night before so everyone can see who they are playing, then divide the brackets into different times so players show up for their match at their bracket’s specific time.

The MVC3 tournament - At least two of the stations were missing characters, and I’m not talking DLC Jill Valentine / Shuma, I mean unlockable characters like Akuma, Taskmaster, and Sentinel. If that weren’t the worst of it, one of the Xboxes had an unpatched version of the game, So some infinites were available, and Sentinel had a ton of HP. I saw people winning with sentinel with that setup before it was discovered to be unpatched and its sad that some people may have lost due to the tournament organizer’s negligence.

The Hori Station - They were selling JLF sticks for $15 and only brought a few. I was near that station a lot and saw a lot of disheartened customers who would have loved to buy one if they had advertised it better or brought more. (But thanks for being there in the first place!)

Pokemon/Call of Duty/other non-FG - Do they really need to be there? There was a power outage, I don’t really mind them being there, nor did I even really notice them but I do know there was a problem with over use of power and I hope they did not contribute to the problem. I can tolerate them being there, but not if it effects the rest of the FG tournament players.

It is solely the players’ responsibility to recognize this, and report it. Unfortunately with everything going on with running the brackets and organizing the tournament, it’s not easy for staff or organizers to notice these things at all times. I did mention to everyone at the beginning that if there are any issues at all stop the match immediately and report them… so yeah, can’t really do much now.

Just wanted to thank the entire ReveLAtions staff and participants for making my first major an amazing experience. I’m a player from the Midwest and came to Cali on vacation and it was awesome to make it out here. Got to see all the top names in person instead of the internet for the first time! What a trip

Hello, I’m the asshole MvC3 tourney dir. Shinkara :'D

Ive read all the comments and responses regarding my handling of the tourney. First off, I’d like to apologize to the players that were offended with my comments. It was never my intentions to hurt your feelings or create a bad atmosphere for your tournament experience. Seriously… sorry guys! :’/

Just to be fair tho… I did make a statement at the beginning of the tournament saying to PLEASE not take the stuff I say to the heart and don’t mean any of it. Somebody on here said Im from the school of JetPhi… and they are right to some extent. I’m actually from the school of Jason Wilson, Big Eric, JetPhi, Henry Cen and so many other great East Coast organizers. I have been running tourneys since the late 90’s. I have seen just about every single possible scenario that could take place. I have learned a few things in my days and I have taken a little bit from all the TO’s Ive learned from. I have seen players do whatever they want at a tourney from leaving the venue and not saying anything, to asking the dir. for easier brackets or switches mid way thru the tourneys. All of that is completely NON EXEPTABLE!! I don’t take shit from nobody! specially top players or irresponsible “scrub” players. Ask around, at WNF we (Monique my right hand woman & I) will put you on blast if you aren’t following rules. I’ve yelled at Combofiend, Claykey D and others for maybe forgetting to report their wins or even justin and floe for asking me to re-arreange the brackets so they don’t have to play each other till later… or random joes for disappearing. I feel that some players just need tough love to get things going. A perfect example would be Ricky Ortiz. I put him on blast for not reporting his first win and not knowing his next match was up because he failed to do so. From that point on Ricky went out of his way every single time to report his wins and be pro active with his next match.

It is unfortunate tho that sometimes responsible players get caught up in the middle. I would like to personally apologize to the Tekken related guy that waited by the table and I snapped at him. My sincere apologies, there was about a 90 min period where things were beyond chaotic since we had over 140 people MvC3 tourney and AE ran a little late on Sat. We also had to re create the bracket (offline) since the internet was acting up with so many people on the wi-fi and I needed to make sure we stayed on schedule. Set backs like late entries and people that were playing MM on the side while tourney had started didn’t help.

I’m a Marvel 2 player from the NYC/New England area… Hype is in my blood! I have said it before and I’ll say it again… you West Coast marvel players are a bunch of fucking pussies!! What happened to the Mike Watson bread of players… it’s all SF hugs and shit… fuck all that soft shit!!

Most of the guys that I’m an “asshole” to are people that Ive met tru WNF and now understand my method of running the tourney. I can honestly say we are all good friends now and sometimes when I tell them “Hurry the fuck up and get to playin” they’ll reply back with “Im on my way there already bitch!” or something to that effect! :’) I will most likely ROFL and say good shit, I like that comeback. If you come to a WNF you will see that the system works almost perfectly, people already know their first match and report their win on the proper line or ask questions in the line next to it… but I have to admit that at ReveLAtions it didn’t work out so well due to the double amount of entries. It was just too many people at once reporting or asking questions. Jint (one of the guys that helped run the tourney) sugested in retrospect that next time we should have 2 brackets instead of one big one. I personally agree with that… there’s always room for improvement and I think you guys input is welcomed. Even if you say Im a dick and should never run a tourney again and let Keits do it or something… I truly respect those comments guys!

As a player I hate it when TOs just DQ you if you not right there or when shenanigans occurs in brackets (top player bias/easy brackets) and as a TO I hate when players abuse their power or the kindness of TOs. I know both sides, I balance it out and run strict tourneys!
I’ve come to notice my method works if all players are aware of the rules and respect and know how to follow them. For out of town players, it might be a little over whelming but if you pay close attention, and are actively trying to find out whats going on with your match things always work out!

Regardless of my method, the facts are these:
We finished MvC3 Teams on time!
Sat we ran a 140 people tourney to top 8 in about 4 to 5 hours, and still had time to showcase Skullgirls and KOF13 afterwards!
Sun was Flawless!

Overall ReveLAtions was a huge success in all aspects!

Yeah I think I witnessed this one, and it wasn’t exactly as you say. We were all cracking up watching it from our seats because it was obvious what Shankar was trying to tell the dude but the dude kept standing there with the deer in headlights expression raising his hand going “here”.

And to piggyback on Paper, my only complaint is that there were 20+ Call of Duty setups and two or three Marvel 3 setups on Saturday. We even had extra xbox’s to run more Marvel but they wouldn’t let us plug anything else in due to the power issue. And then AE ran so long and the stations weren’t cleared until the very end that most people had to go into the Marvel tournament completely cold.

Right hand woman here. I understand that when you’re waiting for a while and someone is yelling it can be frustrating and easy to interpret as ‘This guy is just a dick’ especially in the context of SoCal where strangers putting one another on blast is uncommon nowadays. Of course, anything either Shankar or I have to say about your frustration isn’t going to change your experience.

I will say this about tournament organizing and running - as it is with WNF, there are still people who forget to report their matches, or who just run up and yell their names and run off. Take the number of WNF entrants and multiply it, factor in the noise of the crowd and the matches up on screen, the different booths being run, people getting food, etc, and take into account that TOs can only do so much without the cooperation of players. It’s really easy to say ‘Oh so-and-so ran the tournament poorly’ and ‘We waited for hours’ but how much of that time can be cut in half if players report their matches after playing and stand by (this means be near us as we run the tournament) to see what match they will play next. I totally understand that people want to hang out with their friends, are playing in other tournaments, are watching the matches that are streamed on stage, but it’s important to remember that while you are still involved in a tournament, all those moments you step away are moments other players have to wait on you.

Some of you are excellent at reporting. You check in to see if you have time to eat, smoke, or hang around and that’s really appreciated. I don’t know the cases of all of you or especially the case of your friend, subt-L, but I do know that a handful of people forgetting to report their matches can slow it down for everyone.

Anyway, I appreciate all of you who worked hard - players and TOs & volunteers alike - who helped move the tournament along. With that many entrants and that much commotion it gets very stressful!

Great tournament guys and thanks to everyone for putting it together.

My only suggestion is that if a pool is running late, like MvC3 was, just put up a sign saying how long or when it will start. It was extremely hot around that streaming area and I would much rather wait in the lobby where it was cool and had chairs and tables. And everytime my friend would do a check in to see what was happening he basically got yelled at (according to him, he was just there for support) about having patience even though he is checking in at the times they told him to come back. A tiny sign around the stream station that states “Marvel singles is running late and will start at 7:00 PM” would have saved a headache for everyone.
