I’ll be honest, I only ever really found the original games scary when I was trying to fight off a zombie in a confined area and was having trouble moving or aiming. Other than that, there were moments that I’d call “creepy”, which RE4 did a good job of replicating with the new system. But in terms of actually being scary? I don’t think you could make the games scary without that exact type of gameplay unless they started resorting to a ton of shock value “jump out of nowhere” tactics that don’t really work.
Although, despite my arguing in favor of the concept of evolving the series, I do have to say that 5 became pretty ridiculous, and clearly lacked direction. Hence why after the first few chapters, they gave up on trying to be scary at all (I think the axe enemy and the chainsaw enemy were intended to be scary?) and just went for pure action. The multiple angle shot of Chris/Sheva jumping through the door just in time had me laughing so hard just because of how cheesy and over-the-top it was.
curious to see what they are doing with ashley/cole macgrath storyline. leon’s story already seems good to me
p.s. re 4>5. and i think the reason the older resident evil games spooked me out so much was when i played 3 for the first time as an 11/12 y/o, beign scared shitless when u think nemesis is gone after u go to next room and then you are proven very wrong
I mean if niggas wanted to be legitimately spooked go play silent 2/3. They are muchhhhhhhhh more survival horror than any resident evil. The scare factor from those are largely psychological which is much easier to establish scares. RE always was spliced with action. And I recall Nemesis chasing me with a fucking bazooka lmao, real zombie behavior there. 4/5 were piff, 4 is one of the greatest games ever so I guess thats why people were let down.
I’m so ready for this. I love suplexing “zombies” with Leon and punching everything known to man with Chris’s bulging biceps. Put them both together and Capcom might as well be holding me up at gunpoint as far as I’m concerned.
And as much of a hard-on I have for Albert Wesker, that nigga needs to stay dead. I know you’re godlike but lava and missiles? You got human flesh man.
The Garrador was pretty neat in RE4, at least he had a reason to have a weapon. I want to see more mutations this time around, do something with hunters.
Yes it did add to the tension in some ways but It is a common misconception and a gross generalization to say that the controls were the only reason the original games were scary.
Atmosphere, pacing, soundtrack, resource management, confinement, overwhelming isolation, uncertainty, confusion, ink ribbons etc…the list goes on and on. These features are not exclusive to the original games. RE4 did many of these things very well and it shows. RE5 did none of those things well.
This argument has been done to death though so i’m not about to break it down any further.
My point is that Resident Evil 6 needs to stay as far from RE5 as possible. RE4 is a great template for survival horror. They just need to discard/retool the few things in that game that compromised the horror. Particularly the chapter system/save system and the plethora of ammo. Resident Evil 6 has got me super hyped though. Especially it being released the same year of it being announced. Can’t wait!
I’m very disappointed that Leon didn’t make an impeachment joke when he shot the president
So when the hell does this take place?
“About ten years after RE2” seems to set it just after RE5
He was too busy huffing an puffing like a little bitch. Dude knew he was gonna get fired for shooting the president. How do you even get another job after being the guy who shot the president?
if they REALLY want to give players tons of ammo and an easy save system, include a “casual” difficulty mode you can select at the start of the game that gives you all that, so game reviewers and little kids can still have their simplistic fun, while leaving the actual game designed to be tense and challenging.
Been awhile since I’ve been hyped for a RE game. Glad to not only see Leon in but Chris in the same game. That’s pretty godlike. I’m guessing since Leon is in, hopefully Ada will make a appearance. She’s always been my favorite female character in the series.
wesker better be alive. i’d much rather have them bend over backwards to explain his survival then have a future of sequels with random villains and umbrella offshoots that happen across the virus.
I’m surprised anyone gives a damn about Wesker after they turned him into a cartoon character in number 5. Yes “Seven minutes…” was pretty badass, but really Complete. Global. Masturbation. Was stupid as was getting his head blown off by a rocket launcher as he cried out his former lover’s name CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS.
