Remember when you ACTUALLY had to unlock characters and stages?

I remember that shit. Fuck it. Game Shark/Game saves/Cheat codes made it easier. Unlocking new costumes, sure. why not. New stages? sure. why not.

Fuck DLC though. Stuff like MK9’s Komplete Edition is rad. It should have been released like that in the beginning.

Today I played a KOF XIII tournament where the guys not only managed to not buy the dlc characters, but also they didn’t even played the arcade mode for 20 minutes to unlock billy kane and saiki

So yeah, unlocking characters fucking sucks

unlocking stuff is only fun when your not playing people, at least to me it is. When I play vs. another player and we don’t have all the characters unlocked, it can get kinda tedious.

I do like unlocking things, but unlocking characters is not one of them. If I have to unlock a character, at least make it easy to do.

Yeah, I remember mindlessly trudging through single player SF4 just to play as Gouken. That was a lot of fun, javio. Much more fun than I had in the following 300+ hours of actually playing the game I bought as the character I liked.

So much work to unlock a character that was too broken for tournament play.

God I felt sad for Soul Calibur last Friday, the setup didn’t have Algoll unlocked so two guys tried to get him through Legendary Souls for two hours to no avail, then some guy had to play through Single player and try to beat him. Holy god fuck Edge Master in that mode.

I just got a PS3 and was considering getting a copy of Vanilla SF4 just to have on hand just in case, and because i dont like the game enough to want to spend much money on it. But reading your post has caused me to rethink my decision and potentially save myself $7. So thank you. xD

You still have to unlock them. It’s just that it now costs 20$.

I vividly recall having to stay up from noon till 6AM the next morning unlocking character, downloading dlc, and migrating user accounts for a pile of consoles for a vanilla marvel tournament. No one played jill or shuma, but I still had to end up buying two DLC packs out of my own pocket so that we’d have enough.

Then I had to unlock mu-12 on all of them for blazeblue. And buy four platinums because she had just come out and most of the consoles didn’t have her.

Fuck unlocking so hard.

I unlocked all of SF4 in about 4 hours… Not hard to do… Just sayin.

I love unlocking stuff in games in general. Fighting games not exempt.

The simple solution would to have like a tourny mode or something, since its the only group bitching about it, that unlocks everything without being able to save/get achivements/trophies ect. Since those pop-ups and stops to save are annoying. But thats just my common sense thinking. Not like it takes long to unlock stuff in fighters anyway but I understand the annoyance for multiple set ups when time is a factor.

Marvel 2 took forever and a year to unlock everything… Or at least, that’s what the week felt like.

As a kid? It was somewhat fun, getting over a hump to get that character you wanted to play.

Now? Fuck…that…shit. Damn near kept Seth locked in SF4 after finding out I had to beat Arcade Mode with everyone. Make all the cosmetic stuff unlockable, characters? Hell no.

So much to see and do in 1 player on this little beauty. Good fukken times. I can’t even believe they make you pay extra now for characters locked to the disc, shit just seems so sneaky and wrong, plus of course it means the pre-owned market is gonna be soon knocked out the box, so good luck ever enjoying these games if you’re in a lower socio-economic bracket.

image is broke.

Eff unlocking. Eff it with a broomstick. You want a mode to unlock characters? Fine, have fun. Just don’t have that mode have anything to do with “Versus”, because while you’re home mashing buttons between bouts of slap boxing the one-eyed champ, the rest of us are trying to, you know, get better at the competitive aspect of the competitive game we bought. It’s difficult to do that when you gotta pull some WoW shit and grind through some 40 hours of stupid just so you can actually use the character you’ve wanted to play since the game was announced.

Persona 4 Arena does things mostly well here. Story Mode only gives you four characters to start, and you have to unlock the rest to see their story. Good. Great. Wonderful. And doesn’t interfere at all with letting the rest of us not suck.

If developers want to have unlockable characters, then have a “Tournament” mode where everything is unlocked or a quick-unlock code that just unlocks the characters for that session. I understand that people have fun going through and unlocking things, so let them unlock stages, costumes, colors, music, artwork, whatever, instead of giving us the mentally handisnapped unlock system that was in Soul Calibur V. I’m sorry, but a tournament-legal character shouldn’t be unlockable by what is a glorified grind for a RANDOM LOOT DROP. Oh, don’t think I’m gonna forget about you either, KOF 13. What, beating the game isn’t good enough? Perfecting an opponent isn’t good enough? I need to NOT DO THE SHIT YOU TELL ME TO DO ON THE SCREEN? Where does that make sense? Oh hey, SF4, don’t think I forgot about you. Nice job hyping up console-exclusive characters and then forcing a dumb-ass grind to get them so that tournaments run within the first few days of release have no way of playing the complete game. And then there’s MVC3. What, was the unlock system an afterthought? I bet you had everything unlocked until some moron at Eighting remembered that they make nothing but shitty anime games that have 4,821 unlockable versions of the same character. “Well, we have to piss off the consumer SOMEhow.” Thanks for that. I loved delaying our weekly tournament by an hour because you felt like making unsharable save files. That goes for each of you that did the same thing. Unsharable save files? WHY? Is there a fucking FRIEND CODE attached? NO. Get your fucking ass back to making weeaboo tripe for the Wii. Us men have shit to do.

There is nothing good about that RAM cart.

Nothing.

There sure was in the late '90s, unless you had the board and a nice cab, which… you probably didn’t. All the Saturn Cap stuff had wonderful presentation in the menus, and plenty of added content for home player, but crucially, with the extra RAM, the animation was way more smoother than anything the PS1 architecture could handle.
Turtles on SNES had Ratman and Karai to unlock, but unfortunately, I don’t think you could save them!?

There was Eighting other game TvC. Having to complete arcade mode with 3 capcom and Tatsunoko characters to unlock Zero and Joe. Completing it again with another 3 capcom and Tasunoko to unlock Frank West and Tekkaman Blade. I had to complete arcade with all the unlockable characters to get Yatterman #2. In BB:CS I had to complete story mode with all characters and true end to unlock Mu. Gotta make the unlockable process as avoiding a humanly possible
