Real Places in Background Stages

http://www3.emu-zone.org/host/emugif/index.htm this site has a lot of clean fighting game backgrounds. Just click on the game name in the list to the far rightside.

almost all the stages in cvs2 are based on real locations

Thats a fantastic site, I wonder how they overlay those gifs to recreate the backgrounds fully animated in a webpage? (see example below) How do U save them also, it doesn’t seem to let you save as web archive…

*hope this isn’t too obv, but its such an awsome place for those who may not seen it before.

The South Amrican stage in Sam Sho Tenka:

Is the awsome lost mountain city of Machu Picchu, last refuge of the Inca civilisation:

SNK’s Neo Geo Land was the setting for the Japan team’s KOF 95 stage:

Anyone have a better pic of the cafe?

Cammy’s stage in SFA3 is based on a real location - Mykonos, in Greece; though I’m not sure if both the windmills and the blue-domed buildings are in the same location as featured in Cammy’s stage. In SFZ3 (and SFZ2), during the battle screen, the game even displays the names of the stages - as opposed to the country only in SFA3. It may also be the same location used as inspiration for the Garou team’s stage in KOF '95:

Gen’s SFA3 stage is also based off a real locaction, Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong:

I can’t find pics, but Birdie (and Rose?) stages in Alpha 1 are from the Bruce Lee flick with Mr. Norris. I forget the name, but it comes complete with cats and all.

That would be the Colosseum, quite a few good fights happened there over the years!

This must be the most hyper-real experience a fighting game could offer, you could actualy be inside Neo Geo Land, playing kof95, fighting outside, the building your inside…!!
More pics here, but unfor the KOF stage shows the right hand side entrace, not clearly shown in the pics.

Cool to find that one out, have seen that depicted in a few other (non fighter)games too. And obv I love Gen’s HongKong Victoria harbour

Big Bear’s stage in Fatal Fury 2/Special:

Ayers Rock in Australia. I don’t know the town name but it’s about a 5-hour drive from Alice Springs.

suprised nobody mentioned terry’s stage in the old fatal fury with mt. rushmore

Dude…

That said, I’m a bit guilty of speculating on yun/yang’s stage. There aren’t many landmarks to go on except for the “HFC” sign and the travel agency sign in the back. Every sign there is sort of generic. Can anyone make an educated guess as to what the words on the green sign are other than the last two characters?

That’s also Mike’s stage in Street Fighter.

in the KOF picture, the brazil stage (sao paolo race track) might actually be where they race F1. the brazilian grand prix is in sao paolo so it might be the same thing.

Well, I have reason to believe Cammy’s stage in SSF2 is at Edinburgh Castle…

My mother’d gone over there and she’s the one that says it resembles that place.

I believe the area used can be seen in the picture here (look inbetween the two large buildings for what looks like a small bridge).

Now, this leads me to an interesting question:

If half of the New Challengers’ stages were real places, what about Dee Jay and T.Hawk?

Intruiging:

Tho this looks to be an architectural support feature (not actualy a bridge), it may well be the inspiration for the stage, as I dont beleive Cammy’s stage is based on a real bridge, any real bridge would have sides, especialy a castle bridge. I imagine its a combination of this real feature and Tolkenesque dramatic divices (all those mile high sideless bridges above the clouds), and ofcourse that ultimate Norse mythoogical cliche, the Aurora Borealis,
http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&sa=N&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=aurora%20borealis&spell=1&tab=wi
which is sometimes clearly visible in Scotland, I once saw it as far south as Norfolk.

I imagine Hawks may well be inspired by a sinle place, possibly a Spanish fort (Texans, help me out on my American history here…), tho DJ’s seems like a generic hotel terrace, after this tho, both are deff worthy of investigation.
Great find Tiberious.

Yes I’m certain of it now, after studying this photo:

http://www.dotphoto.com/GuestViewImage.asp?AID=0&IID=63928043

I’ve made a comparison with Cammy’s stage:

http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=edincomp9ji.jpg

Notice how the configuration of the battlements are almost identical, and even the angle when viewed from the real ground level.

Crayffish.

Sagat’s stages (both in old school SF and the Alpha series, that giant sleeping Buddha statue) is a real place in Thailand. I’ve actually been there, so I’ll upload a photo when I get home.

Dunno if it’s true or not, but I’ve heard that Ryu’s stage in old school SF is Hime Jijou (a massive ancient castle in Japan). I’ve also been there, so I’ll upload that photo too when I get home.

there’s the sleeping buddha

umm… is it just me, or is the banner of a kid being breast fed?

Blanka stages (both SF 2 and Zero 3) are located in Madeira River, a big river that goes through both Brazil and Bolivia:
