He was honestly one of my go-to guys for reviews, I always liked to know what his opinion was on films.
Soooooooo, is Roper going to do the show by himself now or something?
At The Movies hasn’t been on for some time. They brought it back briefly with a cycle of guest reviewers and a regular segment with Ebert (narrated by somebody else, obviously), but it didn’t last. They’ve talked about bringing it back again in a different capacity, so we’ll see how that pans out.
The hell?! Cyborg(1989) is on Ebert’s all time list of hated movies!
Review:

^^ One of my favorite movies of all-time. For shame Mr. Ebert! No appreciation for a classic revenge tale set in comic-book style, 80’s post-apocalyptic action. One of the few movies that really got the post-apocalyptic world right also.
Not sure what you guys are going on about, but relying on any single person for quality information is just another form of ignorance to me. There have been soooo many times when critics trashed a certain game or movie, and i checked it out and loved it!
Critics are normal people like you and me. Although they might TRY to be objective, its all bullshit. They have their own level of appreciation for certain genres like anyone else. There will always be some things that they simply cannot appreciate no matter how well done it is.
Chaos Legion, Nightshade, and both Gungrave titles for the PS2 come to mind. If i listened to what critics said i’d have missed out on those GEMS in that console generation.
If anything, i’ll listen to what the overall majority has to say on the subject, and base the average on what to expect from that.
Yea the difference is no critic in the game industry has the insight, nor ability to break down and explain their position like Ebert did.
Of course don’t rely on one opinion (Or even rely on anyone elses opinion) but this idea that critics have nothing worthwhile to say is just as bad to me as people who rely on just one critic.
And again, it’s not about “relying” on anyone for an opinion. It’s never been about “relying” on anyone for an opinion. I’ve read plenty of Ebert reviews that I didn’t agree with but it was interesting to see what an experienced professional felt about something.
To everyone complaining about people “relying” on Ebert to give them an opinion about whether to watch a movie:
Step 1) Go back to page 1.
Step 2) Go to TS’ post.
Step 3) Play the video and get to the 20 second mark.
And please, don’t put film criticism and game criticism in the same sentence unless it is to indicate how they don’t belong in the same sentence together.
With that out the way, I’ll miss Ebert. He was the reason I went into journalism. That venture may not have gone anywhere, but regardless, he’s had a positive impact on me.

Yeah… how dare somebody express an opinion that differs from yours? Clearly this man is an imbecile who can’t be trusted to talk about movies.
Ebert had and still has a powerful influence in the way I write. Gonna miss 'em.

I only threw that out there as an general example of things not adored by most Trusted critics that were still awesome. Nothing more to it.

I know right? lolz.
^^ Actually that post was mostly sarcasm, just felt like mentioning it when i saw that Gem on ebert’s most hated list.
