I thought this was about the former Bills quarterback for a second.
RIP Jim Kelly. I was actually watching Return of the Dragon last night (never actually seen a Bruce Lee movie before then) so looks like I’m gonna have to watch some more.
Shiiiiit, RIP one of the great american Athletes and martial arts heroes. I can gladly say he was one of the reasons I approached my grandfather to teach me Shotokan and my uncle to teach me Aikido at the age of 6. Jim Kelly and Bruce Lee are my heroes.
Out of respect for the man, I’ve put together a playlist of five of his movies, which I will watch once weekly (or biweekly, as will be necessary at some point) throughout the month.
someone posted up some of jim kelly’s point sparring from the 70’s. at the time this was considered unorthadox…alot of point sparrers back then def looked for more aggressive strength initated attacks. you can see jim played a speed game…which is condusive for longevitiy imo. but the fact is this is how point sparrers all fight now in the sport karate circuit. this has been normal since the late 90’s/2000’s…he was ahead of his time. Also it’s clear he understood the importance of flexibility combined with speed. Which is interesting since tkd hadnt hit the states at all yet, point fighting today is viewed these days as a off shoot of tkd point fighting…but this is way before tkd was a real thought in america. This is super interesting to me, to see just how good he was…now point fighting looked like a very refined version of what he was doing.
I was just watching Enter the Dragon. Man that dude was ahead of his time. I really am salty he has passed away. I will be sure to watch the Tattoo Connection some time this week.
