So basically, I knew abit of the Marvel universe, but if someone could advise me some comics from heroes that are in MVC 3, I would be really pleased. Comics HAVE TO be recent - from the 90’s to now.

Read All-Star Superman like Tizoc said. You’ll like him after that. You can watch the animated movie based on it for the cliff notes, which is really good but the comic is better. Then never read another Superman comic again. Semi-joking but there sure are a lot of bad Superman comics out there… Kingdom Come and The Nail are pretty good for not directly being Superman stories I guess.
Udon’s Taskmaster series has never been collected so you will have to hunt down the individual issues. He recently had a new series that was collected in a TPB that should’ve been out by now, but it’s insanely late. I guess check Amazon in a few months.
Tizoc got most of the Wolverine stuff already. You might want to check out Elektra and Wolverine by Greg Rucka also, just because of the Japanese vibe MvC3 has to it being made by Capcom and stuff. It’s a prose book, mostly words and very few illustrations. But the few illustrations are drop dead gorgeous. They are done by Yoshitaka Amano best known probably for Vampire Hunter D and Final Fantasy but he was also the main character designer of Gatchaman, Casshern, Hurricane Polymar, and Tekkaman IE a lot of stuff that wound up in TvC. So it’s like you’re reading MvC3 meets TvC if you check it out (kinda, sorta, not really… ).
There’s a character in it that predates X-23 and is very similar without spoiling much. The live action Elektra movie is based on this story, but BOY did they mess it up… :wasted: - The Hand (same ones from that MvC3 background) gets mentioned and hey, one of Felicia’s alts is based on Elektra’s color scheme so there’s some MvC3 fan reasons to check it out. 
Note that it was created in such a way that the words don’t always match the illustrations. That was done on purpose for an amazing reading experience - this is really hard to explain without you reading it for yourself.

I can’t tell you why it is both a great Sentinel story and a great Magneto story without spoiling everything but definitely read New X-Men by Grant Morrison. The Omnibus was selling for reasonable prices at Amazon before, now I’m seeing it for $600 WTF? Probably cashing in on the suckers that go see X-Men First Class and want to buy something… Get in volumes if you can’t find a reasonable price for the omnibus.
Follow that up with Astonishing X-Men, the one where Wolverine got the outfit he wears in MvC3. IE Capcom likes it.

Oh and Thor got his MvC3 outfit from the JMS series so that’s another MUST READ for fans of the game. The live action movie used a lot from this comic, but JMS wrote the movie too lol! He even appears in the movie, the first mortal who tries to lift the Mjolnir in the flick. 
There’s a lot of good Doom stories but I like the one where he fights Spider-Man because I haven’t mentioned Spider-Man yet except for my ‘Friendly Neighborhood’ reference. :looney: Doom’s not the main focus, but he kicks butt! And you get Doom without the four guys Capcom left out of MvC3 man later for them. :badboy:

Storm’s a hard one since most of her best stories are in one X-Men comic or another. She’s not really in the Astonishing and New X-Men trades I mentioned though. I really liked her in the OG Inferno series though so you may want to look into that one I suppose. To be really spoiler free, she helps take down some big demon that I won’t name for now to not give things away. I guess maybe you can look at the series as “What would Storm do in a Devil May Cry game?” Eh I dunno… :clown:

Chris Redfield appears in the best Resident Evil comic available in the US, which isn’t even made by the US lol! It’s the Hong Kong comic based on Resident Evil Code Veronica. Yeah I know, when most of us think of Hong Kong comics those crazy HK SF comics come to mind where Ryu and Chun-Li are married, Master Bison is Chun-Li’s dad, Blanka’s her brother and Ken is an alien (oh I am not making this stuff up…) but they actually do pay attention to Resident Evil’s actual story and it’s extremely close to the game. Chris of course has a minor role as he did in Code Veronica, but there’s an excellent flashback scene that shows the end of RE1.
Unfortunately, this series is really hard to find and the prices are jacked up at some places. I found volume 4 up on Amazon.
You’ll have a much easier time with the DC / Wildstorm stuff. Nothing great, pretty forgetable but nothing horrible either. I’m a little fuzzy on if Wesker shows up in either this or the Code Veronica books, but he probably does. Hard to remember. Oh and note that all of this is before Resident Evil 5, IE before Chris started taking steroids… :wonder: Anyway pretty much all of the older DC RE stuff is collected in the Fire and Ice book.
There’s one story I liked that had to do with cactuses carrying a virus. I just dig it because that’s my own little fan fiction story that exists in my head of how MvC2 Amingo came to life. :looney:
DC / Wildstorm did put out a new-er Resident Evil comic to coincide with RE5. It’s a side story with new characters, so no Chris or Wesker. Capcom confirms on the back of the first page of the single issues that the story is NOT OFFICIAL. See Capcom is very territorial with Resident Evil, it’s their baby / cash cow. They don’t really care if you think SF, DS and Mega Man comics are official or not. I still don’t know how they let all of those horrible Hollywood RE movies get made though… but they make a lot of $$$. Eh I liked the last one because of 3D blood splatter at least. :chainsaw:

It’s a fun story and there’s some pretty violent images in there.
Not really a War Machine fan. My favorite James Rhodes story is probably Secret Wars, where he was wearing Iron Man’s suit! An oldie but a goodie. The cover for the MvC3 comic that came with the pre-order of the game is a mock up of the original Secret Wars cover, so there’s that. Anyway lots of Galactus, Doom and X-Men. This Marvel’s first big intercompany-wide crossover (their response to DC’s original Infinite Crisis) and it paved the way for all of the other crossovers. NEVER read Secret Wars II though.

Capcom made the Harvey Birdman game for the PSP and Wii and Harvey Birdman is connected to the Super Friends versions of the characters, at least in a joking way. So yeah at least Super Friends Joker is vaguely connected to Capcom… :looney:
The greatest Joker story is Killing Joke by Alan Moore. For reasons I can’t get into without spoiling.

For Cable I’d stick to the more recent stuff. Messiah Complex, Messiah War and Second Coming. Note that Cable is one of the players in these major story arcs but aside from the Cable / Deadpool series already mentioned I think this is some of the best Cable material out there. The trade for Second Coming isn’t out yet so you may have to wait until at least June or so.

Spider-Man… From an MvC3 standpoint it’s a little tricky because he hasn’t been the guy in the game that’s working for the Daily Bugle for quite some time. Chris Baker confirmed he’s married in MvC3, but there’s not much ingame evidence of this in the game except for one line he says in the game about him being late and MJ’s going to kill him. He’s no longer married to MJ in the comics (long stupid story/retcon…) so for now, I’m going to stretch a little bit back in time, but still sticking to stuff that came out after 2000 so not too far back.
If you have nothing against prose books (all words and no pictures) Jim Butcher’s The Darkest Hours is one of the best Spider-Man stories I’ve ever read, hell one of the best BOOKS I’ve ever read. Spidey’s still married to MJ here, but teaching and not working for the Daily Bugle. It’s still a great read.
The above story does flow out of JMS’ (writer of the Thor comic and movie, all of the good Real Ghostbusters cartoon episodes and Babylon 5) ASM run but it’s not necessary for you to read his run first because it’s self explanatory. Still one of the greatest runs on ASM ever, even if it was plagued by a lot of editorial scrutiny. There’s five books in his ultimate collection. Here’s the first -
Just me I liked Peter David’s run on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man a lot more, but he was much more free to do whatever he wanted to do unlike JMS. I’m heavily biased because PAD’s my favorite writer though heh! Here’s the first volume, there’s 4 in total.
A fun one if you want a crossover MvC3 type of story is Spider-Man / Red Sonja. It’s one of the last romantic stories dealing with Spider-Man’s marriage before it goes bye bye. Covers by the late Mike Turner too (RIP). The TPB even features the original Spider-Man / Red Sonja crossover story from a Marvel Team-Up issue, back when Marvel had the Red Sonja license.

Oh and if you just go by the alt costumes Spider-Man has in MvC3 then this becomes much easier. Read Civil War for his Spider-Armor suit. Awesome story besides. And if you read this you’ll understand what Captain America means in MvC3 when he beats up Iron Man and says “That’s for Civil War!”

Back in Black!
The last alt suit he has is from the much newer Big Time arc. Here he’s way beyond married and he’s not working for the Bugle anymore, but it’s still a fun read and a good jumping on point for the newer incarnation of Spidey.

Of course if you just want to say TO HELL WITH ALL OF THESE CONFUSING ASS CHANGES lol check out Ultimate Spider-Man by Bendis, which is a reboot of the series and treats things like as if Spider-Man got his powers today and not in 1960 whatever. Only thing is that both the new cartoon and the new movies are going to based on Ultimate Spidey, but it seems that both will still be very different from the source material. Anyway MvC3 doesn’t seem anti-Ultimate-verse or anything given that -

Just to add, any Superman books written by Geoff Johns or Greg Rucka are worth checking out too. Those are the only other writers I know of who wrote some good Supes stories.

Mind you this isn’t a very easy book to get into due to the writing style. Furthermore, the art isn’t very good in some places. However this series of books are among the best X-Men stories ever written, so if u can see past the art, and get used to the writing style, you’ll really enjoy it.

Just to add this book serves as a ‘sequel’ to Morrison’s X-Men, BUT it’s easy to get into that you can read this first before Morrison’s.
I wouldn’t recommend reading Warren Ellis’ Astonishing as it’s just…not as Astonishing as Whedon’s =/

1- Start from the beginning by reading the first stories by Stan Lee, but these stories may seem outdated in terms of style but it’d help in seeing how the character starts out.
2- Read JMS’ run on the book, which is IMO, one of the best Spidey stories written.
3- Ultimate Spiderman is not set in the main continuity, but is non the less another great Spiderman book. It’s a take on a teenage Spiderman (note that he started out as a teenager when the character was first created) in a modern day setting (well it started in 2000, but you get the idea).
I wouldn’t call it a reboot though @3@, but it does take place in it’s own continuity (the Ultimate universe)
If you want to start with 1, get the Essentials books-

I’ve met a lot of guys that work for Marvel and DC though, and a lot of the time I catch them in comic book stores in New York city buying comics on Wednesday (the day new comics are put on shelves) like the rest of us. Marvel guys like Joe Quesada (but he’s in LA now on the entertainment side of things), Bendis, Fraction and DiDio of DC you can usually catch in stores buying stuff.
A lot of these guys are really nice in person. I always say something nice to them, even if I don’t agree with every decision they make. Still pound for pound I think comics are better right now then they’ve ever been. You just have to take the bad with the good sometimes.
Plenty of Marvel and DC writers and artists don’t work in New York anymore thanks to the technology where they can scan, E-Mail, PDF and fax a lot of work in. Some of them don’t even live in the United States. So yeah conventions are still the best way to meet a lot of people. Lol you can follow a lot of these guys on Twitter too.
To be semi on topic, Frank Tieri, who wrote the dialogs and endings for MvC 3 is one of the funniest people you will ever meet. Every other word that comes out of his mouth is a curse! He pitches story ideas to Marvel by saying, “This shit is gonna kick so much fucking ass!” I’m not kidding!
As someone who shares a distaste for more cookie-cutter heroes like Superman, I recommend reading Red Son. It’s basically ‘What If Kal-EL landed in Soviet Russia?’

I just wanted to vouch for the X-Force series comics which i recently read. After getting a subscription on marvel.com’s site, I’ve been reading a lot lately and X-Force: Angels & Demons is by far the best I’ve read. Makes me wish Michael Choi would draw more Marvel comics.
