Nova doesn’t really benefit from Log, so yeah. Spitfire
i mentioned log because i saw doom and assumed beam assist! spitfire is hands down the better assist but log has its uses!
Thanks for all the replies guys, I went ahead and tried out all which you guys suggested, in the end I chose to stick with nova/dormammu/doom.e
What assists should I be using with them? Also I saw how spencer-assist helps allot with otg and combo extension, is that type of extension possible with nova/dormammu/doom?
I suggest
Pulse / Dark Hole / Plasma Beam
it shouldn’t matter too much. Nova/Dorm does quite a number already
It covers a prime area of space, has high durability, and doesn’t scale combos much.
Everybody benefits from log trap. The problem is the character it’s bound to.
Log is ridiculous for Nova. Makes most of his abilities real easy to confirm from and with minimal scaling. It’s also excellent for extensions and resets. Very strong Nova assist.
Spitfire is ALSO good though, so it’s hard to say which is better overall. Log probably being better in a few matchups.
log trap also offers different avenues for tech such as lol tac and easier red lifeless double hypers!
Doesn’t the Pulse assist get affected by the “red health” issue though? I think Rush is a better choice, but yeah, the Nova assist shouldn’t matter too much.
I was thinking of using Nova/Dorm/Doom, but with Doom Rocks instead. Seeing Eita use them makes me want to consider it. Dorm/Rocks doesn’t sound like a popular choice, but I want to think of it as a poor man’s Jam Session and plus it helps Dorm defensively and get some space.
I think Nova/Molecular is really good, and if Eita’s success is any indicator you can make it your dedicated assist on a Nova team. That said I really have no idea how good it is for Dorm; on paper it’s okay but I’d have to see it to believe. Either way I recommend swapping out Dark Hole for Liberation if you’re going to use rocks because you have 0 consistent combo extension otherwise. Rocks are a little random so comboing after a ground bounce with them is weird. No-charge Liberation is a free Cent Rush M, Cent Rush H extension and he can get extra damage off of any other version of the assist. Also, Dark Hole’s only use for Nova (incoming setups) isn’t necessary when you have rocks.
As for the Pulse/Rush thing, it’s a matter of preference. There are probably really stupid incoming mixups/unblockables with Dorm using Cent Rush assist, but Pulse is probably better for neutral since it gives you extra durability right where you want it, good for a character like Dorm. Also there are very definitely nasty incoming setups with that assist as well. That it uses red life isn’t a big deal, though you do have to micromanage that aspect for combos and setups just like with Liberation assist.
Okay so this will be a work in progress as it has been on-and-off for over a year now, but let’s talk about Nova/Strange/Ammy one more time. My new year’s resolution is to lab the fuck out of this team until I can play it effectively. Tagging those interested in the team @Xr0s-up @HopefullyCynical @Robawtninja @Marvelo
Basically I’m looking at the team as a prospective counter pick for Nova/Doom/Ammy players. The team clearly has strengths against certain shells that Doom/Ammy doesn’t cut it against, namely zoning teams, and has more oppressively advantageous matchups vs Doom, Iron Man, etc. That said, Strange proves to be little more than a liability vs. Zero, Wolverine and most Vajra teams in my opinion, and also doesn’t offer an assist quite like Molecular Shield to help against rushdown characters (Eye requires a little more labbing out). I’ll make a list later of common shells and which team I would (prefer to) pick against them.
The main issue with the team of course, is damage, which is also a problem with Nova/Doom/Ammy but is mitigated by easy hard tag combos off of any standing unassisted hit, any air throw, plus metered setups for Doom combos off of corner ground throws and some back-to-the-corner combos (see midscreen Nova Force dhc to whiff Sphere Flame, dash up and combo). Thanks to Marvelo’s recent videos there are setups that give tags from Nova to Strange in similar situations but they are a bit more character-specific and many more require two bars to set up, plus others make use of Vajra.
What Cold Star offers combo-wise is of course the crumple into hard tag. Unlike with Doom, you need to have midscreen FOF down to get real midscreen extensions which, let’s face it, we’re Nova players who the fuck wants to put in more effort than necessary, right??? So I came up with this little extension that minimizes any midscreen FOF loops you might have to do:
(whatever standing combo) Cold Star, HRP H, dash forward and Javelin, tag to Strange, s.M(call Cent Rush assist) H Impact Palm, delayed L Teleport, etc.
The bolded sequence allows you to skip maybe 2 reps of midscreen FOF, so even at the most extreme distance (Nova’s back to the corner) you can get the opponent into easier FOF range with only one or two midscreen FOF reps. There may also be setups that use M teleport to cross the opponent up, but in general it seems like you lose more ground than you gain.
Your other options to kill are TAC, TAC reset, Cold Star oki, etc.
All that being said, let’s consider the implications of an even-lower-damage version of Nova/Doom/Ammy. Marv mentioned a while ago the “snap metagame” which honestly against most competently-constructed teams (IE any one with an anchor) is what you’re gonna want to go for. In that case, low damage isn’t as bad of a problem. All that’s necessary there is that you build a bar off of any combo, and Cold Star pretty much helps you do that no matter what. In this sense I think the team does its job pretty well.
So here are the common characters teams and shells in the game and who I’d run vs. them in theory:
Zero- Doom with PB or molecular depending on the assists
Morridoom- Strange
Wolverine- Doom with molecular
Mags/Doom/Phoenix- Strange
Dorm/Doom- Strange
Dante/Strider- Doom with either assist, depends on the player here imo
anchor Hawkeye- I think Strange…?
Doom/Vergil- this one I’m a little iffy on. I feel confident in my Doom/Ammy incoming vs Vergil, and the matchup otherwise is 5/5 maybe better for Doom/Ammy if there’s a lot of meter on deck. But Strange wrecks Doom forcing the player to bring Vergil in or throw Doom away. Maybe in this case it depends on the point character.
Doom/Sentinel- Strange
After that it kinda boils down to weird characters you don’t see that often. VJoe I would take PB, Spider-Man, Task, Skrull, Trish, I would want Bolts, Felicia, X-23, Cap I might want Molecular, etc.
All this requires a lot of work left, and I’m gonna do my best to see how far I can take it. Hopefully everyone can put their best effort in and we can make this team happen!
I thought about using energy javelin for the pickup and then use a meaty rocket punch to get a raw tag
Unfortunately, it only connects with Rocket Punch M. Rocket Punch H is too slow. Unless someone has a better idea
Oh crap. I forgot to showcase this method does not work too well. I can’t link cr.L because Vergil is too low. Preferably, Rocket Punch H will be the one causing the wall bounce.
Yikes that looks pretty tight. The midscreen air throw is really unfortunate, if we can figure something consistent out it’d be pretty great…
Just improved the Cent Rush extension to cover almost the whole screen:
crumple, tag, s.MH (call Nova) Impact Palm S xx TK H Teleport, falling IP, jump MMH j.IP land IP S, FOF loops.
I only needed one midscreen rep from the absolute deepest part of the screen. From midscreen this is a full corner carry!
Of course if you’re feeling particularly lazy or the character’s hitbox is weird, you can just do a regular air combo land and team super. Strange/Nova, Strange/Ammy and of course the full 3-bar team hyper allow for a pickup.
This is a worthy New Year’s Resolution! I will be happy to help in anyway I can!
I too was trying some stuff with the M Rocket Punch wallbounce tags. I would do the H loops to bring them close, then call cold star and do energy javelin, and the cold star would hold them while the javelin connected. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get anything off the hard tag Maybe someone better at the game can do something with this?
I really want there to be a consistent hard tag option available to this team, Nova with bolts and cold star would make me really happy. I agree with your write up @discovigilante about snaps “negating” the damage problem of this team, but if someone starts Morrigan or Vergil, I want to know I can kill a problem character no problem.
You can likely develop a combo that builds close to a bar and near the end as long as you haven’t used your ground bounce you can maybe energy javelin (1st hit), immediate nova force, DHC to rings for the DOCTORDHCGLITCH combo.
I’m not too familiar with Cold Star extensions and I haven’t had a chance to lab since I’ve been so busy with work, but you can likely do something with a Grav Pulse H (the bounce off the pulse gives you the time necessary to hit the first part of the javelin).
IT MUST BE POSSIBLE SOMEHOW.
So I briefly thought I was on to something only to be terribly disappointed…
Off an air back throw with starting your opponent in the corner:
air dash down forward whiff H, Nova Slam (call Cold Star), s.MH xx Centurion Rush M, Nova Strike M tag to Strange (tag attack connects)
…and then the only thing that connects after that is c.L, nothing else will link and nothing after c.L will combo besides a snap Maybe this is the start of something though?
edit: that was with a Nova training dummy btw, tried this on Morrigan afterward and even after adjusting the starter I couldn’t even get Strange’s tag to connect, so that doesn’t bode well.
have you tried “…cold star, H, S, TK dp.M…” to try and alleviate some of the hsd?
Yeah, unfortunately it didn’t work either. Plus the TK timing is weird cause you have to delay it.
yeah i just tried testing it myself i didnt delay it though…still sucks because i couldnt even land the hard tag!
its neutral game already bops the way i play my team and as of right now im happy that it does poor damage!
still to back up what marvelo said there has to be some way!!!
Heh, thanks for the call out Disco. Nova/Strange/Ammy is like super theoretical team right now. The problem here is that damage output seems extra low. Your tag combo uses both assists super early on and leaves no extension for Strange. Then again the only decent extension for Strange is Nova in the corner with Eye (about 80k extra), don’t think you can extend with Ammy. IMO, one of the biggest strength to Marv’s recent discovery (because I play Team Nemo) is that you get to raw tag AND keep both assists for extensions for Strange which is amazingly efficient and you can’t really do it here.
The good thing is that Strange has strong high/lows with Cold Star via TK Flight. I can tell you that midscreen snapback with Nova Bolts is pretty dirty (ala in the corner HRP H, cr.M > Snapback into left/right with bolts) so that’s an option for you. I think you’re gonna have to burn X-factor in very specific spots to kill certain problem factors of opponent’s team to make this work.
Here’s an idea. What if you can somehow force them out of the corner and do team super with Strange/Ammy. Then it’s left/right city with teleports and OTG with graces. Also watch Moons for Nova/Ammy and Serp for Strange/Ammy.
Here’s several vids for you to get ideas going. I’m excited to see where this goes. I love me some Nova/Strange.
Similar to Marv’s setups which involves grab-raw tag but IMO it’s really finicky. Definitely needs more testing. From Kusoru, or maybe Nemo on Kusoru’s account.
Tenboss’s triple hyper with Nova/Bolts.
Remember what I said about forcing them out of the corner? Here’s a few with Strange from Infrit. First is solo, one with Nova assist.
Did some more testing today, couldn’t really get anything
Speaking of forcing them out of the corner though, I did discover that if you do h loops and bring them close to the ground, you can do centurian rush l or m and it would move Nova into the corner while cold star continued to combo. Not sure if there is anything that we can get off of that, but it’s something I guess.
