Compare the hardest songs in IIDX and Pop’n. I don’t know what they are exactly, but say let’s take Cowboy EX and MENDES [a].

MENDES:
MENDES just starts going and doesn’t stop.
And the learning curve in Pop’n is much easier just because of the difficulty system. The difference between an 11 and a 12 in IIDX is much larger than a 36 to a 37 in Pop’n. I can clear most 11s in IIDX, but clearing a 12 seems almost impossible, whereas in Pop’n there are 38s I can clear while I still fail on Saint Seiya all the time (35).
Do you guys play with one hand or two for IIDX?
For some songs I can use one, others I will have to use two.
I remember watching LISU back in the day.
djhbrd, I’m not so sure you have the credentials to talk about what game or song is harder/hardest if you’re failing 39s and 12s in pop’n and IIDX, respectively. Judging by passes, Toy Contemporary EX is the hardest pop’n Music song with 1 US player having passed it (Kaze). Following that is Cowboy EX, Niente EX, then Classic 8 EX. For IIDX, there are several songs IIDX players consider to be in the top rung of hard songs, including Scorpion Fire [a], FAKE TIME [a], quell [a], and various others. MENDES [a] is not one of them, but it is close. Without black anothers, IIDX SP is easier than pop’n. I’ve cleared every song on IIDX that isn’t a black another, and only have 3 black anothers left to clear. For pop’n, I have Niente EX, Cowboy EX, and Toy Contemporary EX left to clear for pop’n 16 and lower. I’m close to Niente, getting close to Cowboy, and not really that good at Toy Contemporary. That’s pretty mcuh how the IIDX black anothers are going, so I’d consider IIDX SP just as difficult as pop’n to simply CLEAR all the songs.
For full combo, IIDX SP is harder, for AAA vs. Perfect/100k (meaning they’re equally good), pop’n is FAR harder.
If you include DP, IIDX is the hardest game in the bemani series. Personally I also think Guitar Freaks is harder than pop’n Music and if you’ve played it extensively you’ll understand why.
Anyways, I guess this is kind of a weird post and I’ll probably get flamed because people think I’m a liar or a braggart or a loser or something. BEFORE THAT HAPPENS I’d like to stay on topic and say I’ve played pop’n Music for five years or so now and it’s easily my favorite bemani game. IIDX just isn’t diverse enough for me musically, but it is fun to play.
LISU is known for his one-handed style. Almost all players use both hands, and honestly I think LISU is using both as well for some songs now. Most songs that he’s famous for beating single-handedly (har har) were back in the day and a little easier. I mean really, compare V[a] to any current 12.
I probably don’t, I’m just going off of observation. If you’re closer to the Bemani community (I’ve kind of fallen out, I very rarely even visit Bemanistyle any more) you probably know more about the current state of the game than me.
Just to let you know I’m not trying to be mean either, I think you just have your ideas a little misplaced since you’re not quite up to passing most 12s in IIDX yet. Your pop’n song was right on the mark though! If you played AC you’d know about Toy Contemporary, that’s all. The thing about MENDES is it’s sort of a stepping stone from stuff like GOLDEN CROSS and AA and fairly difficult 12* anothers like those to that top set of songs. MENDES isn’t hard for me to pass most of the time, I may fail 1 in 10 times. But the other songs harder than it, I usually fail 50% of the time or so.
A lot of players will probably cite Nageki no Ki or quell as the hardest IIDX another chart to pass.
As for LISU, last time anybody saw him he was about to give up. He couldn’t pass Scorpion Fire [a] or Mei [a] one-handed and it didn’t look like he was anywhere near close. Right now I think the best one-handed player is TAIRYU, who has far surpassed LISU in both scoring and passing.
