Man up.
You know, video game tournaments (especially Evo, for that matter) are one of the few events where tournament rules and regulations are volatile and can change on a whim. It’s also one of the few tournaments that accept people entering the tournament minutes before it starts. Granted, it would be explosive to have a 1000 man tourney, but if the venue cannot meet the needs, then it would be disastrous. Honestly, with the limited time and resources you have, it would be beneficial to cap it at 512, but since Evo is right around the corner, it would be a dick move to change it so close to the event, especially if people made plans and got days off work to go and participate.
1 match, best 3 out of 5 rounds double elimination up until the quarter finals, where it goes best 2/3, and then grand finals is best 3/5. 4 out 7 matches is just too much, imo, even though it has been an Evo standard. Just ensure that you get more TVs, PS3s, game copies, and man power so the process can run faster.
Does Evo still hold region conference finals? I didnt hear anything this year about them, but I think it would be wise to reboot that idea later down the line.
First off, one game and single elimination should not be an option. Put yourself in these situations - What if your first match is against Valle, Watts, Ross, etc? That would be shitty if you get a bad draw and you’re out in one. You need to be able to prove yourself and fight your way through the losers. You deserve to give people that chance. Single game / Double elim is better but you can still eat a random Ultra for 60% and lose a match that you should have easily won. Anyone can get fooled once but if you are fooled twice, then you deserve to lose. It happens to everyone and I would hope that what I consider to be the best Street Fighter tournament in the “World?” would do such things to relieve doubt in letting the best players advance with a 2 out of 3 match
I love how everyone is saying “man up”. It sounds like an awesome experience having 24 hour SF but you guys are not looking at it realistically at all. I remember when I did EVO 2k5 for ST and there were about 300 people that entered. The time between when the tourney started for ST and my pool coming up was 10.5 hours! Can you imagine if the entries were at 1000? Most likely, you wouldn’t be playing for a whole day; and waiting for that whole time your pool gets called at 4:30AM…you are going to play like shit and regret going for this 24 hour deal.
Also, I know that people don’t like to talk about this but there are “marquee” players that get preferential treatment when it comes to these tournaments (i.e. allowing players to be late, almost absurdly late for their scheduled match while the opponent is waiting to prevent disqualifaction. I’ve seen delays over 90 minutes waiting for marquee players in almost every major tournament I’ve been to). I’m not bitching about this aspect and I’ve tried debating this before but it solved nothing so I’ve come to accept that and I don’t care anymore.
Anyway, what if your match is at 4AM and you are facing Justin Wong. They cannot find him or get in contact with him. They are not going to DQ him, so you must wait until they get in touch with him; and like I said before, I’ve seen delays of 90+ minutes due to this. So instead of pumping yourself up at 4AM to play, you are now waiting until 5:30AM to play, with your haggard ass. Sound like fun? I’d much rather wait 90 minutes in the PM, not AM.
My point, from all this rambling, is that all of these negative scenarios can be easily avoided if you just cap it at 512. With this, the only problem that arises from this is that some people will not be able to enter but it would be their own fault. Registration has been open for more than a month and there is still another 45 days to go. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to register early in get in this tournament. Only the people that are lazy and wait until the last minute to register will not be able to enter and that is all on them. You’ve had ample time to register, if you don’t make the 512 limit, it’s all on you, son
With the 512 limit, we won’t have to stay up 24 hours a day for 3 days to avoid missing our match, we won’t be randomed out by a single match and we won’t be pissed off when we get first round vs Daigo and get 1-outed. I cannot really think of a bad situation for limiting the players to 512. It’s perfect! LIMIT TO 512!
*P.S. - Very sorry for my ramblings. I’m in hour 7 of a 10 hour meeting at work and I needed to vent and kill time.
Deuces.
The pools in 2k5 were 5 man round robin pools, several games were run at the same time, and people were allowed to enter the tournament the day of the event. Now the pools are back to large double-elim ‘mini-tournaments’, all registration is done ahead of time to allow for better planning, and the games are run one at a time. This means less confusion for the players, more matches running at the same time, and a better idea of when you are going to play and less of a need to wait around all day
That’s great. Man, I’m not hating or anything, just throwing out my opinion. I really think that running a 24/7 tourney is going to be too harsh for the players and the staff. I was trying to give some probable scenarios with a 24/7 format to make the players take a step back and think about the downsides for a minute, instead of the fantasy of how badass playing high energy, high anxiety SF 'round the clock. Just sounds like a receipe for disaster.
I’ve considered the very real possibility that SF4 will have too many signups… if that happens there’s only one fair solution:
Option E – Cancel SF4 and run BlazBlue instead!
Seriously, why is this game not already at Evo?
New game, HD graphics - Check
Widely anticipated - Check
Console release is before Evo - Check
Not a sequel to an existing game - Check
Awesome gameplay expected from a competitive fighting game - CHECK
SRK Staff??
p.s. regarding the actual topic… I think most people will prefer option D / man up.
If there is a need, I’ll volunteer my time to help run pools like in 2006.
I’m down for a marathon as long as it’s random. No favoritism, Giving top tier players all the sweet times would just be unfair to the whole processes. How hype would it be to say we saw gootecks or Mike Ross, EdMA, Jwong,Daigo @ 5a.m. then say they go on to win the tourney after all that. That would be legendary.
This is a great idea. I suggested it in 2k7 after seeing a lot of different people running pools in very different ways (some very efficient and experienced, others chasing their tails). Good shit!
I haven’t posted in a while but this was the list of volunteers on this thread. SF4 is going to be tough but if there is enough help I believe that it can be pulled off very easily. If anyone else is reading this thread and would like to volunteer just send me a PM. Also if you want to volunteer you can also show up for the judge training. If you have no experience running tournies this could be some valuable experience.

go ahead and add me to the volunteer list.
they should put all 24 hours on dvd haha.
The current plan is to have all sfiv pools completed by midnight on Friday. This might change as more people sign up, but that is the current plan. There is no need for 24 straight hours of pool play.
^ I never seen 24 hour pools before. It would be interesting to see it if enough people register. :-}
So for people who can’t come like me, what are your plans for the stream. Is there really a possibility of seeing 60+ consecutive hours of pure SF4 secks? If you guys man up in Vegas then I’m sure a few of us 50,000+ people watching online will also man up and stay with the stream for the entire 3 day event :looney:
Man up is right! This is THE tournament this year. Take a look at the post time. EC been doing this
You forgot that west coast is coast of the beautiful people. Beautiful people need their beauty sleep! (You should know what I’m talking about if you watch the Devastation streams.)
lol…seriously…anybody who thinks they can come in 30 minutes late for a match should take a punch in the fuckin mouth for being late…
and then get DQd…
I think the only option is to man up…dont cap…dont single elim…staff needs to do their best in making a schedule…make sure top players get a good look to getting past the beginner stages(no offense to everyone else out there but thats just the way of the world)…
get outside help…get outside help…get outside help…
its obvious there is going to be human error…player delays… stick swapping…possible fights…
staff needs to be on their toes when these things do happen…
it wont run smoothly thats for sure…but…you live and learn…
My goodness you think they should consider a BYOSB(bring your own sleeping bag). Some guys may be dead tired but can’t just run back to there motel that’s like 15 minutes away. They could designate a area for the dead tired and maybe I guess you can sign in to take a nap and then be woken up when it’s your turn LOL.
So I have to know, now that there’s 1040 confirmed, what the gameplan on this is now.
