Listening to Smogen is the cheapest option moneywise, they use some online match thing instead of the actual games and if you insist on actually playing the actual fucking games you can just bust out your GBA copy of Ruby to get a similar experience to their boring ass forced meta rather than buying the new games.

Protip on Smogen rulings, does it kill the same boring ass mon’s they’ve been playing since Ruby? If yes banned.

Does it have counters? No because they are unplayable because the things they counter are banned.

Fuck Smogen.

Who said anything about feeling attacked or offended? By now, you should know that I don’t care anywhere near enough about what anyone thinks about anything to feel this thing you call “offense.”

Backs out of thread

Sigh.

goes to Google “Smogen”

Nah. If you want to take Pokémon seriously the first thing you should do is learn the mechanics like EV’s and IV’s.

That page links to a great deal of mechanical info:

Spoiler

And that is a guide Saitsu wrote ages ago.

After that you’ll want to think about your team and how you want to play. More on that later.

Also don’t play singles. Start with doubles. It may appear more intimidating to start with due to more variables and synergy, but you’ll thank me later.

@Bious

Thank you, for that.

I welcome whatever else you, and others, might impart.

Look, do what you want, but I’m telling you right now all the childlike fun and nostalgia you feel towards Pokemon is going to be slowly drained out of you once you go down this rabbit hole.

You’ll start obsessively micro managing every single minutia of even the random mons you use to beat the game, fretting over having the right Natures, Characteristics and IVs/EVs. For a time, it will become less of a game, and more like a job… Then THEY will start trying to tell you how you should play and what you can and cannot use.

You’ll begin to look down your nose at the six-year-old who just trains his starter, the first thing he caught on Route 1, and whatever legendary, and you’ll mock anyone who doesn’t battle on your non-official simulator bullshit that should have been C&D’d over a decade ago. You’ll toss shade at the people who enjoy 2v2s or Battle Royales and talk endless shit about why GameFreak doesn’t cater to overly broken singles 6v6 “metagame”. Running endless calculations over what can 2HKO what when Steath Rock is up and what percentage of damage you can do to your “check” or “counter” on a switch in if you’re at +2 while Paralyzed.

Then one day, you’ll wake up, realize you’ve spend hundreds of hours obsessing over bits of code, and for what purpose? To argue with some clown called Mood4food who doesn’t even know what half the moves in the actual game do, because he only uses about 40 of them spread out across a mere 50 or so of the 800+ Pokemon that exist, in a shitty fan-made metagame so full of made up house rules and “throws are cheap”-style clauses, you think you accidently walked into a Smash thread on accident.

So yeah, think very carefully on if this is something you REALLY want to be a part of, because in my eyes, the shit ain’t really worth it. But, I’m too damn stubborn to let these fuckers spread their cancerous mindset without opposition.

Maybe I’ve spent too much time staring into the abyss… But the battle is never over… GET OFF MY LAWN!

You’ll get this guy who cant teach you how to battle but will or you can join the nice guys

Woooooo

Or how about instead of having both your dumbass sides talk about how Singles and Smogon is evil and you should avoid them, along with how people who are shitting on Competitive Pokes are jerks who just hate losing…how about you just let the guy do what he wants without being colored by both of your dumbass biases?

The man asked for information. I gave him that information along with the side-effects of gaining that knowledge.

Point out anywhere that I was incorrect.

I told him im a nice guy and if he wants to play competitively to not listen to po, am i wrong in my statement

As I have said before…while their mentality is horrid (like SJWs) their site to use for reference would benefit you. Use it to see what works and what can work for you specifically. Like me, I do use certains setups but will adjust based on my style and what works for me. Will it turn out well? sometimes yes sometimes no, but you have to just learn by trial and error.

Again USE AS A REFERENCE AND FORM YOUR OWN OPINIONS AND STYLE.

Just dont use poison jab on gliscor or i will end infernoman

Sure!

After you learn the mechanics, you basically need to think about your team and what you want to run. This is where stats, typing, moveset, and favoritism come into play.

HP: How much HP a Pokemon has.
Attack: How much physical damage a pokemon does. This symbol (

) means that the move inflicts physical damage and uses the attack stat (some exceptions apply.)
Defense: The higher this is, the less physical damage a pokemon takes.
Special Attack: How much special damage a pokemon does. This symbol (

) means that the move inflicts special damage and uses the special attack stat (some exceptions apply.
Special Defense: The higher this is, the less special damage a pokemon takes.
Speed: Determines who moves first.

Let’s use everyone’s favorite (overhyped) Gen 1 Pokemon Charizard as an example.

Spoiler

http://pm1.narvii.com/5722/7ae0d685b2c2e6d5f622087fb47d5aee71e11266_hq.jpg

As you can see, Charizard’s highest stats are its Special Attack and its speed, meaning it is best used for firing off special attacks at the foe.
Now Charizard’s typing is Fire/Flying, which is extremely important. Not only does typing determine what a pokemon is weak to, it also powers up moves of the same type as the Pokemon (this is called STAB, or Same Type Attack Bonus. More info here:http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Same-type_attack_bonus.) Charizard is best used to fire off powerful Fire and Flying Special attacks.

Mow we look at Charizard’s moves.
http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/006.shtml

The strongest Fire Move Charizard can learn is Flare Blitz, but that is a physical move. Looking at the special moves, Charizard can learn Fire Blast, but Fire Blast has only 85 Accuracy, meaning it will miss 15% of the time. Now misses can cost you a match, so generally you usually want to favor 100% accuracy moves; yes, they are often less powerful, but don’t miss (there are exceptions, as sometimes the risk of missing is worth the greater power. Plus Fire Blast really isn’t as bad as some other moves I can name…) Flamethrower is both strong and reliable, so we teach our Zard that. Next we teach our zard Air Slash; though it is low in power and has a small miss chance it’s Charizard’s only flying special STAB. Now next we teach Zardy coverage moves.

Coverage moves are basically non-STAB moves we teach mons so they won’t be screwed when going against a mon who resists their STAB(s). Looking at the list, we see Zard can Learn Dragon Pulse, which goes well with him since Dragons resist fire but are weak to Dragon moves. Finally we teach him Focus Blast to nail anything that resists all of those moves. Since we want our Zard to be a nuke we set his EV’s in Sp. Attack to max to ensure he hits as hard as possible, and we also max his speed to allow him to outspeed the opponent. We dump the remaining into whatever defensive stat we want (usually HP, but sometimes you should place it elsewhere), make sure his nature is beneficial to him ( He needs more help in the speed department, so we give him a Timid nature to help make sure he is usually going first), slap an item on him, and voila! One Charizard ready to battle!

Now we need to get some buddies to help Zardy fight. Looking at Zard’s typing, it is weak to a variety of moves, the most dangerous being Rock and Water.

Zard: "Gee, I need a friend to help me with these Rock and Water attacks!"
Venusaur: " I got you fam :bee: "

Not only can Venusaur tank those nasty Rock and Water (and electric!) attacks heading for Charizard, it has an advantage over Pokemon of the same types!

Zard: "That’s cool, but we need some more support as well. Like if we run into a Pokemon with a high Special Defense."
Hitmochan: “I got ya back.”

Hitmochan hits pokemon with weak defenses hard, has a bunch of moves to cover a variety of situations, and can even clear hazards (more on those later).

Zard: "Kay, but what about-"
Clefable: "Cleric here."
Zard: “…”

Clefable can learn a bunch of moves (healing, status afflicting, hazard, buffing) to assist just about any team and is also a good attacker with its fairy moves and extremely wide movepool.

Zard: "How about a tank?"
Skarmory: "You call?"
Zard: “Wait you’re not a Gen 1-”

Skarmory has an excellent defensive typing and defense stat, meaning it can tank a lot of physical blows. It can also assist the team by laying hazards and harassing opponents with status moves like Toxic. It also covers Clefable well as it resists both of its weaknesses.

Zard: "Sigh, what’s next."
Breloom: "I’m only here cause of favoritism."
Zard: “But I’m the favorit-”

And finally, Breloom is here cause it can use its spore move to put slower pokemon that could counter one of your mons to sleep (and as we say, a sleeping mon is a dead mon.) It also has a strong priority (meaning it goes first) move that is great for picking off weakened opponents. Also favoritism.

And now we have a team! after we make sure their stats and movepools are correct, we can go out and battle!

Annnd that’s it for now, if you want I can explain what usually goes on in a match, rules that most people follow, items, playstyles, and Megas later.

don’t make this about me. At least Posion jab can do something…unlike sweet scent suggested by another player…

I never suggested… You know what? Fuck it. I’ll see you on Dec 18, when they try to ban one of the Tapus or something else equally silly.

Well since Smogon was mentioned. Anybody feel like Double Team and minimize should be allowed? I mean it’s not like the old days where there was barely any checks to it. Although there was good ol haze. But now there are more never miss moves that are also beefed up. The ability unaware and No Guard. And the meta has gotten so fast and hard hitting that you are really taking a risk trying to stack double teams. Because one good hit is all it takes to make those turns wasted.

No because the never miss moves are useless because evade tanking is banned.

#thinklikesmogen

Depends on if you like rng. I’ll expand a little bit.

The problem with evasion isnt that it’s inherintly broken but more so it’s an rng mess. There are moves that beat it and you can simply bully your way through it. It’s more so that it can get out of control fast and the moves that reliably beat it are spread pretty thin and/or are fairly weak. When playing against double team/minimize users the game can get to the point it’s not about skill and more about good RNG. It’s up to you to determine if this is what you want or not. Even when allowed the moves won’t dominate and will probably rarely be used but it’s a RNG nightmare.

Same is said for OHKO moves
