There are big differences in performance between keyboards. The keyboards you get with the average computer nowadays is total trash. The rubber domes under the buttons wear out, response time sucks, and ghosting and locking are terrible.
I have a Razer Tarantula I use, it is extremely responsive and allows 10 keys to be pressed at once, but from what I’ve read, I was lucky to get one that worked right. A lot of them are DOA when people buy them and the customer service sucks.
I’ve tried the really expensive Logitech keyboards that say they are for gaming but have found incredibly bad button limits. Like, not being able to press up arrow + right arrow + spacebar without there being locking. I don’t know how they get away with selling some of their keyboards for so much.
Someone else mentioned a “clackity-clack” IBM keyboard. Sounds like an M series with click keys. Those things will last forever. There are a lot of loyal fans of the M series still using keyboards now that they got with computers 20+ years ago. If I had some extra cash i’d offer $100 for a good IBM Model M. It’s the last keyboard you’d need to buy.
I have an IBM engineering keyboard that’s about 15 years old. It’s rubber dome so it’s not the best, but it allows up to 7 simultaneous buttons and the response time is fantastic. And it weighs about 5 pounds O.O
Typically. laptop keyboards are very good. There are almost always limits on button presses where you can press 5-7 buttons at once that are far apart but might have trouble with buttons that are close to each other. Logitech has put out some compact USB keyboards (usually marketted as PlayStation 2 USB keyboards or something like that) that are basically laptop keyboards that aren’t in a laptop and the ones I’ve used have been really great for fighters.
I agree with PersonaDark - on GGPO I play better (win percent is higher) on keyboard. Not because I can execute better on keyboard - I’m still a stick player - but because I am limited to “basic moves.” I have to calm down and think about how to win without doing some 90% CC (since I can’t even activate on keyboard with 3P/3K mappings). With stick I’m always trying to reversal DP, block on reaction, do difficult combos, reaction anti air with supers, etc. All of this just isn’t safe compared to blocking when getting up, or doing normal anti airs that depend on range.
It’s the old school mentality. See how SaBre practically explained it…thats really what it is.
Many find it hard to believe. I personally dont hold it against you if you use a keyboard IF AND ONLY IF:
-You DO attempt to show up to tournaments without the keyboard.
-You dont go spitting off arrogant holier-than-thou-my-shit-dont-stink BS about how you can beat such and such player/read their minds if you are an armchair assassin… STFU! :annoy: :annoy: No respect earned staying at home jacking off!.
Once again if you actually travel to play tournaments it dont matter what you do at home.
But if you sit at home and play and then come off as an arrogant asshole then thats when there’s problems. We think you use Macros to get that shit off…no respect earned and if you wont show up to a tournament to prove otherwise you just confirmed our thoughts.
Meaning otherwise we really dont have a problem with you guys as a whole…its a few bad apples that spoil it and paint a negative stereotype for the rest of the bunch.
I’ll give you this, you can play a wide variety of games at a level a bit higher than beginner, but you aren’t good at any one game, not even NGBC. It is possible to compare your skill level to other players without actually fighting them…it’s rather easy, many people here do it all the time too, including you.
You don’t have to enter tournaments.
Explain why this is bad. Last time you tried to do this, you got shot down by a bunch of other people in the Online vs. Offline thread. Once again…there are many people on kaillera that would have easily taken any of those tournaments you were at recently, without a doubt. You don’t even know who these players are…don’t know anything about the online scene, but continue to talk about it. I on the other hand, know both scenes.
My macros must be malfunctioning since I happen to mess up my combos from time to time. You’ve never even played kaillera before, you don’t even KNOW what kind of macro options Mame allows in the first place. Why the hell do you continue to speak without knowledge? Get that shit out of here.
Keyboard isn’t even that hard…and recently I borrowed a stick from my friend, and it didn’t take long at all to relearn all of my kof combos on stick (I don’t play kof at arcades but I do play GG and other things). Keyboard is very similar to a pad…the directional buttons on a pad are analogous to hitting keys on a keyboard…they are just buttons after all. Now comparing keyboard to stick is different, of course…
And lastly I’d like to add that your comments were irrelevant to the topic, and you will probably make this topic stray from what it should be about.
i just wanna see a good player use a keyboard in person, to debunk the myth. like i can see how a pad can work well for fighters. but man, a keyboard? just sounds blasphemous! =) all these years i hear kb stories but never have i seen one rocking a side tourney at any major or anything of that nature to show that all those online fools i played a long time ago, can pull off some high end combos on a kb.
its just one of those things i have to see in person. a video isnt gonna show me this. mad props to anyone that will rock their kb at some side events at evo and do well. cuz watching a shitty player on kb, aint helping my myth =) but either way, it would be interesting to see!
mind you, these are from a long time ago and I did them for someone, so it’s definitely not my entire list of combos…autofire is used for the Yuri combo and the beginning of Andy’s combo…especially the Yuri one since it has 3-4 one frame links and it’s just stupid to try to do it otherwise. All other one-frame link combos there I did with no auto.
And if anyone doesn’t know…kim3.avi contains a bugged combo that is rather hard to do. The kula combos on Joe are also bugged (note the counterhits in the middle of the combo).
if they invented sticks and arcades have levers instead of keyboard there should be a reason
i were a kb player myself but the very first time i got a pc without a suitable stick
but now i find really dumb to play with anything different from sanwa
that combo is old, really old especially when you follow some japanese/taiwan/chinese discussions
also is pretty easy to execute i did it even the very first time i tried
For a long time I had no console so all that was available to me was emulators (this was like 1999). I learned to play all these games on keyboard prior to getting a stick. I still used keyboard when not on the ps2 because of input lag using my converter. That usb tool they posted in tech talk really helped alot in solving that though.
When I was on ggpo I used keyboard only. Never used customs cause my keyboard doesnt like more than 3 inputs at a time.
honestly, i could see it being a little on the side of peer pressure. probably some players who are good with keyboards don’t want to drag it out because they’re afraid that they’ll be looked down upon / ridiculed because they’re using a keyboard. so, they bring sticks (or to a lesser extent, pads) instead.
