Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena

P4A does reduce meter gain after using a move that consumes SP/tension/super/whatever, but I wonder if it has something similar to the tension pulse in GG where backwards movement temporarily reduces meter gain, and offensive things/IB increases meter gain.

If I were at an arcade, I think the ABCD curve layout would be way more comfortable to use.

I wish that the game had some option to make the characters talk a little less. When there are all these long-ish voice clips that constantly get cut off part way through due to other actions being performed, or when the characters even have entire phrases that they say on block that gets repeatedly triggered in succession during a block string, and on top of that the announcers/commentators talking, the whole thing can sometimes sounds like a mess. Maybe I really just wish that the game designers wrote shorter things for them to say.

wait, which 1 more cancel is the one that resets the damage scaling?

The one that uses your Burst.
I’m not sure if it totally resets the damage scaling, partially resets it, or just applies a counter proration.

That Naoto brings back the Fatal KO system in a fashion is fun.

Ton of A-Cho P4A video up today. If no one else links it by the time I’m done with my alerts, I’ll do it myself.

Is there a video of what meters do what? I’d love to see one.

Also, fuck the buttons. Having to hit three buttons in an uncomfortable manner is bollocks. Maybe I’ll just do a Guilty Gear curve.

They’re pretty cut and dry. Health bar is obvious, Burst bar seems self explanatory (its just a matter of understanding bursts, which is in the control explanation), SP meter for the most part is easy until Awakening (gain 50 meter and increase maximum possible meter by 50). The Persona meter is the one that will leave people confused at first.

Here’s the A-Cho videos.

I don’t get what people are complaining about with regards to the button layout. ABC is a fairly common kara throw input in every game with A+B throws; not even somewhat awkward. Hell, Potemkin has to FRC with P+X+X in order to negative edge potemkin buster in GG, and that’s a MUCH more awkward motion since you have to hit three buttons at once and only let go of one of them immediately. ACD is slightly less common, but certainly not rare.

The only thing I find odd is the return to GG1-style “A+B = Dust”; A+B doesn’t really need four functions. Then again, having a button which did nothing except sweep / AoA would be just as strange control-wise.

It could just be me, but I really wish they made the round victory counter more obvious. As it is right now, it’s two incredibly hard to see diamonds right above the health bar, and that’s really obnoxious to try and keep track of when watching match videos, especially if you’re like me and like skipping around. That’s about my only complaint about the UI though. Other than that, it’s incredibly easy to see all the important meters.

i have my theory that it was a request from atlus in order to keep all the buttons needed on the face of the pad, remember that this game is got an arcade release first becasue ASW pushed for it, originally was planned to be only a console release, from what i have been told
lucky for us, we can assing the A+B to other button to mimic a 5 buttons layout
or if you are like me, a button for burst and a button for RC aswell

Yeah, and unless you stay until the end of the victory animation you don’t see if you got a Perfect or not. Sad times…

I have no idea what the persona meter does. Can you only call out your persona a limited amount of times? And why does Burst fill up so slow?

I’m really considering using the KOF/SNK layout

Well, Since A and B are the same type of attack it’ll be like playing FHD or WHP on a original Neo Geo cab.
I would recommend,

Basically the Persona Meter is the health meter for the Persona. If the Persona gets clipped while its out, you lose one block of that meter. The Persona does not regain health. If all 4 blocks are taken out, you are put in what’s known as Persona Break. While in Persona Break, you can’t use any attacks that require the Persona (check each character to see how much it affects them) and you cannot Burst. While in PB, your Persona Meter recharges, once it’s back to full, you are out of Persona Break and your Persona has full health again. That’s the gist of it.

As for why the Burst builds so slow, I’m guessing it’s due to how versatile Bursting is in this game. You got your normal get out of jail free card, and then you have your Gold Burst. If you burst in Neutral and you hit your opponent you gain full SP meter and your Burst meter only goes down to 33% instead of 0%. Then there’s the One More Burst which you can use in your combos to extend them.

Now, watching a bit of the first A-Cho vid, it seems Naoto has trouble with Aegis, just a random thought.

And Oscar, I didn’t know you were picking up P4A.

Persona meter is like the lifebar. If your Persona gets hit, it loses one.

Basically, when your character or persona gets hit while the persona is out, you lose one primer (card). If you run out of cards, you get persona broken. While persona broken, you can’t do anything that requires the C or D buttons (including Burst) until your Persona gauge refills, which takes about 10 seconds.

Burst recharge is also purely time-based, unlike GG bursts which charge faster while you are getting hit or low on life. It takes about 60 seconds to refill fully. Gold bursts only use 75% of the burst meter though, so they take more like 45 seconds to recharge.

edit: I got beaten by a couple people, but there’s some stuff that’s wrong up there (like gold bursts only using 66% meter; it’s 75%, and also the lack of mention that you lose persona primers if your character gets hit while the persona is on the screen too)

The game is out in Japan right now. Cant you play this game here using a Japanese account for the PS3? There’s no real difference between the World and Japanese versions of the game. This whole region locking thing doesn’t really make much sense.

I designed my controller around this game. (Even though the Persona 3 art says otherwise.)

Through 40 minutes of the first A-Cho vid, right now there’s a freaking clinic in Kanji play. People have to not leave him alive with full Awakened SP meter…you’re just asking for death.

And on the point of Negative Penalty, it happened once…to Aegis against Naoto. That round…Aegis (who got NP’d) got a perfect (at least I think…it’s hard to tell without waiting until the win animation is done…).

Yo, fuck Shadow Labrys!!
That character is scrubby as fuck, holy shit!!

Everyone gonna be bitching at Mitsuru cause people are like “OMG TOP TIER!! WHY AM I SUCH A BITCH!!” when people don’t know why she’s top tier. While these motha fuckers bitch about S tier, they’re gonna be getting raped by day 1 Shadow Labrys mashing buttons all fuckin’ day and getting away with everything.

FUCK THAT CHARACTER AND HER BULLSHIT!! SDKFJSD;LFJSA;FJKJFJSDLFJS
