the pc version would get pirated and distributed on the nets on day 1
I think it won’t happen.
Then they need better drm.
what they need is to make online multiplayer use steam and not GFW and release it a few months after console version.
Doesn’t exist.
Er, yeah it does, the goal most companies set out for PC DRM is 1-2 weeks, day one crack means the company has utterly failed.
And that never happens.
Nude mods. Nude mods everywhere.
Arkham Asylum did pretty good with it’s dummy torrent flooding. Wasted a lot of bandwidth and they stopped most of the Day One piracy, forcing those people who REALLY wanted to pirate the game to risk a second 10GB download.
Capcom should do a Steam/D2D release, with delayed disc retail or retail download vouchers. That way, you avoid retail copies getting ripped before release day. While we’d all love lax copy protection, we know that’d never happen. This way has a better chance of reducing that initial glut of piracy.
Also, DLC characters available over Steam would clean up. Just look at that fucking railroad simulator that gets new DLC every ten minutes. They’re always on the frontpage now. It’s never been easier to get market spotlight on that service.
EDIT: Imagine Capcom doing the same thing. Messing with the frame data and make most attacks cause no hitstun or very little damage. Having characters with their total health reduced by 90%. Give Tron Bonne a mustache…
Tons of motivators to get people to shell out for the real deal, it’d be pretty lulzy if Capcom got creative with a dummy release. Make enough changes and it’d take hackers a loooooong while to fix the frame data (Compared to how long it takes to crack open traditional protection), since they might not be able to just rip it all from the 360 release…
That means people would have to wait for a direct Steam rip, a crack AND for word to get out that X number of torrents out there are bogus. That could be days of substantially reduced piracy, maybe even a week.
IDK what you were looking at but on private trackers there were legit versions day one. It’s also braindead easy to know if it works when there’s usually a hundred+ comments from people that have tried it on every major torrent. The dead ones also die off when it’s an obvious fake.
Yeah instead of day 1 rips we’d have day 1.5 rips (which is better than the day -2 release SFIV had I guess).
DLC can also be pirated.
It does not take a week to crack a game. You’d have a legit version by the end of day one. The one legit version would be the most seeded/downloaded version of all of them, which is what people usually go after anyway.
Cool but I personaly wouldn’t care. I prefer fighters on console.
I’m not saying no piracy. I’m saying reduced piracy. I still think a Steam release would clean house. Quality Steam releases are seeing more sales than the alternatives. People want to buy shit over that service.
Checks SFIV’s status as most most pirated pc fighter.
Yeah, I’m not seeing this happening.
Well, considering the only competition is BlazBlue: CT, which had even less advertisement than SFIV and an even smaller presence in retail and online markets AND came out after Continuum Shift’s console release (wtf?), coupled with SFIV’s complete lack of functional copy protection… It’s not really a legit argument.
The only other PC fighters are like Tekken 4 and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload
This isn’t going to happen no matter what logic or DRM is used.
The game will be pirated and Capcom doesn’t want that. (EVEN if it sells well)
The game can’t be only on Steam because Capcom doesn’t want to alienate customers. (They want everybody to be able to have it)
Any new DRM will be broken. Even if it’s “hard” to crack the first day, it WILL be cracked. (Just fact)
Not to mention the fact that there isn’t a big enough market for fighting games on the PC for them to go through the trouble. (There honestly isn’t)
If they’ve explicitly stated that Super Street Fighter IV wasn’t coming due to these issues, then what makes you think Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is coming?
Just keeping it real.
For real I love my PC and stood by it as much as I could but really we are gonna be shafted when it comes to releases. After the announcement of the first Crysis II beta being released on Xbox that was the last nail in the coffin. I can has abandonment?
They don’t want to alienate customers so they don’t release it on PC at all? Wouldn’t some mild alienation be preferable to complete abandonment?
Kinda funny, huh?
In the end they just want to make sure of 2 things:
[]EVERYONE who wants it pays for it.
[]They don’t want to force a certain service (Steam) to ensure that.
As it stands there is no way to do both as cracks will pop up for any sort of DRM which means at least one person will pirate it. Which is a big no-no according to Capcom (ridiculous).
Then they shouldn’t be releasing it on the 360, it go tpirated on it to, was one of the most pirated games at that. The PC excuse is just that, an excuse. And seriously, who the fuck are they gonna alienate if they release on Steam?
Just think about it from a business perspective.
How much potential money did they lose from the pirates? If even just 75% were to buy the game, how much more money would they have?
Now compare that to the 360. How much potential money did they lose compared to the PC? In all honesty nothing. They’ve gotten so much money from alternate costume sales and the ACTUAL selling of the game that it makes it worth it.
If they’re going to put money into a PC version, then it might as well be worth the gains, no? At this point, there’s nothing worth it (business-wise) about porting to the PC.
As for Steam, I personally know a lot of PC gamers who do NOT like Steam and have a frustrating experience when forced to used it. If allowed, they’d prefer not to deal with it. (Personally I don’t think that it’s a significant amount of people, but they’re out there).
Also just because the game is on Steam, does not mean it won’t get pirated. I personally knew that you could pirate Modern Warfare 2 (which required Steam) and crack and bypass the need for Steam. Of course you lose online play, but that’s kind of understood when you pirate a game. I’m sure the same would be done for Super Street Fighter IV (which again Capcom wants to avoid).
