Look guys business is business. His usual people (assuming they paid 5 bucks) generated 2990 to our measly 740 (which would only decrease each consecutive month). So Will can either be “honorable” and let some SRK people play (and basically throwing away a G, which is A BIG DEAL FOR A SMALL BUSINESS these days.), or chalk it up as a failed experiment and piss off 3-6 people who aren’t exactly ideal clients (i.e. SRK people who aren’t paying for time on the computers as well).
I totally respect Will’s position. If he allows people to play casuals there in the future, I would support those as well.
@LuLu Smacks: I think most of us totally get the business thing, we really do, the problem is that the tournament was seemingly introduced as a gift to the Fighting Game Community, and not so much as a business plan.
No one was ever told they had an attendance quota they had to reach. I don’t think anyone knew they’d have to match attendance with everyone that goes to his shop and plays online games in there daily.
Most of us understand the business aspect of this situation, and how the shop is losing money by doing this if the SRK community doesn’t come out a certain amount of times… but to then just say none of us are in because we aren’t dedicated enough? o_o
Isn’t going to multiple locations and playing against many different people the pure definition of ‘helping the competitive game scene grow’?
Just wanted to say this is the best LAN center on the face of the planet. It was clean, organized, and the staff was amazing and does a great job working for the people. And best of all, there are no kids masturbating under the desks. I’ll be coming here on a regular basis.
Edit: Oops. meant to post this in the Dreamlab thread.
I love how you used a name generator for your surprisingly huge customer base for SRK at your LAN center but I guess those fake people pay the bills too.
You failed to deliver and follow the rules which you set from the beginning
I would still argue about the principle of the rule if the pot was $5.
Because you did this… you will no longer have any customer base originating from SRK and will continue to have “scrubs” as you call them fill your stuffy, non ventilated, non air conditioned LAN center. What kind of LAN center has bad ventilation and No A/C?
You should have made it clear how you wanted the turn out to be… not just say… “hey guys $1k up for grabs but you gotta go to WNF fights okay!?”
Last minute changes is a big NO-NO
You should have taken my compromise with top 16 SRK and top 16 PC Arena Scrubs in your 32 Man Tourney… you could even lower the pot to $500. Everyone would’ve been happy with this… because that was the most fair option considering your RULES. Better Yet, let us send ONE of our guys into the tournament at least.
But because you chose not to… you have a) lost all credibility; b) fail to keep up the integrity of your business; c) lost respect and have changed how people view you; d) failed twice to make PC Arena a place for SRK casual sessions… only reason you got another chance was because of Alex Valle.
Robb, Easier to Run, and Wakasashe made a strong point that we DO NOT lack dedication… maybe dedication to your LAN Center… but not dedication to the game… you need to be more specific next time buddy and you need to be specific on what you wanted turn outs to look like. (like saying you want to reward your loyal customers)
Learn to run things better, plan ahead, and don’t get ahead of yourself offering a $1K pot EACH month… that’s just a bad financial move… on top that, you had a SHITTY SYSTEM to being with.
This is just a bunch of BS. I have more things to say but it wouldn’t be appropriate because I hate it when people don’t keep their word… but I guess you don’t know what that’s like… I hope a lot of your hardware rebates don’t come in the mail… maybe you’ll know what it feels like then… “zomg I sent in my UPC Code and my receipt… its been 2 months… no rebate? They LIED to me!” Oh man… don’t you hate liars? I do. Mostly business owners that are liars.
Wow I didnt know this place started to gather sf4 players again, but now I see I realized this too late. This will be the perfect place for me to play offline since AI is always too crowded and their ssf4 setup is garbage. I agree 100% what lulu_smacks said. The last thing a player wants is to see another “possible” competitive arcade scene to be closed just because the owner gave away $1000 for free and couldnt afford rent/bills.
I would love to meet competitive ssf4 players between mondays and thursdays, and this would be a possible place to do that.
I don’t think anyone wants to see Will go out of business, that’s just malicious and wrong. The problem is that something was promised and wasn’t delivered because unspoken expectations were not met, which is pretty unfair. We’re not trying to close him down, but we’re trying to make him live up to his word despite it being a bad business decision on his part. We’re also being told we’re not dedicated to this game or community, based off of not spending 8 days a month in a single location. Robb said it best:
Rather it feels as if failing to make the competitive scene grow at this one single location was grounds for going back on what was once said before. I know a lot of us drive out to Tustin, Santa Ana, Fullerton, L.A, and other places in a month… playing with new people, at new locations, trying to keep venues open at ALL of these locations. That’s helping the community, that’s keeping our scene active and successful. I’m sure people have personal preferences on where to go (WNF started me into the fighting scene, so I try to support that every single week as a small thanks for getting me involved with this community, and for the friends I’ve made through it), but I see both new and familiar places everywhere I go… that’s what it’s about.
In all fairness those names aren’t all fake. I assure you quite a few of them are the names of local customers and close friends of Will. What I can’t assure you is that those people (especially those with visits in the double digits) are showing up to play SSF4.
My theory–Instead of telling everyone to fuck off because his plan didn’t pan out how he thought it would Will instead went for a list that would keep the SRK crowd from earning spots in the event. The last minute rule change was also a nice touch.
Good theory… I like it Andrew Strife Likes Your Post
Will, you have a chance to make things right, take my compromise… you can even lower the pot to $500. I’m sure there was enough attendance from the SRK crowd to make up $450+ which is almost all of the pot. This would be the most fair… and most competitive event.
If not, its YOUR ass, not ours. If you only want to cater to your WOW, HoN, and whatever else they’re playing customer base then go ahead although you were “trying to reach out” to the SRK community, you failed to do so… We don’t want any part of that.
That makes me wonder… did a tournament even go on yesterday? I seriously doubt it did, and if for some reason it happened… I would have loved to watch.
Will makes himself very clear, and though no one in the srk community was eligible to enter, the locals must to have had their tounament as per his word. So congrats to someone out there who won $1000! Again, I would like to see that 32-man roster list and the results of that tourney.
Just read this thread and had no idea this was going on! The most important thing is a mans word. I see a lot of rules and guidelines not followed and that is disappointing. Not a good look!
Nobody from SRK made enough points (highest points is 6-7?)
PC Arena locals made top 32 (none of which attend WNF)
You must play in WNF to be eligible for the 1k tourney. (Contradicting Rule)
SRK community lacks dedication - Will
Why would the SRK community go to another location that does nothing for you. - Will (incentive arguement)
This is obviously a severe lack of communication on both ends and unnecessary fighting words.
Will’s intentions are not to make anybody feel like they are lack luster in dedication. He just wants people to play in a centralized location for quality play. He’s old school like I am and just wants to see the scene grow in a hard core competitive state.
I understand how the community side works about expanding to other venues, this is always healthy, but the level of competition struggles because you have to start a new with each one. Vice versa for having high quality players in one area, but less venues and less growth.
The point system should definitely be revised since there are contradictions in the rules which still leaves players with confusion. The locals do bring in the business, but they should also try to level up their game with us on off days, since they allegedly cannot make it during WNF.
If Will revises the system, will SRK give it another shot as long as its black and white this time?
There’s no need for exchanging fighting words, and by no means am I excusing what Will said/did about the recent events. I’m well aware by reading the last few pages everybody is upset.
This community shouldn’t be about kicking people when they’re down. If I remember correctly, everybody had nothing but GGs and positive things to say about the PC LAN Arena until recently.
Are we willing to move forward or let this place go…
Up to you guys.
P.S.
Will is still cool with running gatherings/events for the SRK community.
Sorry for being all over the place btw, I have a lot of catching up to do =/
