If this thread had been available when I started doing paint job mods!
Anyhow, I wanted to chime in and give my own assessment on the Rustoleum and Krylon spray paints…
They’re at best inconsistent.
Rustoleum clear enamel is great for metal surfaces. The other enamels range from “meh” to “passable.” Since I’m generally spray-painting a lower grade stick faceplate to prevent future rusting, I generally don’t give a fig about that paint job since it’s going to be covered up by artwork. The actual plastic base is a different story. I want an excellent paint job on that!
Some Rustoleum and Krylon plastic spraypaint is good to excellent (white, red, black) but other colors I have found to be very inconsistent and unforgiving at times (navy blue and yellow).
I’m looking into Vinyl dye – I’ve got easy access to AutoZone and Dupli-color Vinyl dye – since it appears to be more consistent as many of you say.
If I’ve had problems in the past with Krylon and Rustoleum plastic spraypaint and want to recolor a plastic stick base, how do I go about fixing my problems? Sand first to get the surface as even as possible and then apply a vinyl dye? Do I dye white first, let that dry for a few days, and then apply a new vinyl dye color?
This is something I’m looking into doing next spring/summer since I’m about burned out on this aspect of stick mods. I’m looking at refinished two stick bases I’m not entirely happy with. Painting is by far the longest, most boring, easily the most dangerous (toxic fumes), and generally the hardest part of stick mods.
Results with matte black Duplicolor vinyl dye are decent for me. this stuff dries fast as hell! I ran out of dye while applying a coat to one of the white parts of the TE shell so I’ll need to grab another can tomorrow.
I painted the black parts on my TE stick. I think I may have applied too many coats though since the surface dried up a bit and was a little rough.
Any tips on making it smooth? would 1500 grit sandpaper do the job? I only applied 3 layers on another part of the TE shell and it came out a bit smoother, though still a little rough.
Hi guys. I have a new plexi and print in the post from Art and want to spray my red TE bezel a kinda Astro green. Theres a lot to read through here, is vinyl dye my best bet and where can I purchase the right product online in the UK.
@Newtybar
thanks dude I keep that in mind when I get some paint
does anyone know where I can buy some vinyl dye online. I went to Kragens, 2 Autozones, Lowes, and Wal-Mart and none of them had the color I wanted.
I was searching the forum and found a post from Raeli with this link. do these give it a fat finish because I don’t have the sandpaper and patience for it
Quick question:
If I were to spray a black case with white vinyl dye will it come out to be a shade of gray or will it actually be white? Or does it all depend on how many coats that I spray on it?
Where did you guys find the Krylon Fusion clear coat? I’ve checked in every Canadian Tire near my house and they never had it. Also, if you bought it online, mind giving me the website?
what kind of stick do you have? If it’s a TE, I did take the terminal strip out of the last one I did to paint the full case, but I don’t think I really needed to. As long as it’s masked well it should be fine.
i bought the krylon triple thick clear coat thing that was mentioned in the first guide, but i wouldn’t recommend it. I don’t know if I applied too much or what, but even after a lengthy drying period, I ended up making indentations on the clear coat from wrapping the usb cord around the SE
Hey guys, I used some Rustoleum Vinyl and Fabric Spray on the sides of my TE yesterday and I had a few questions that I hope some of you might be able to answer.
First off, I’m not entirely sure if the product that I bought was in fact Vinyl Dye. Others in this thread have said they used the Rustoleum brand, but not the exact product. I used this:
Except that it was the flat black version, not the glossy kind.
The can says it takes 24 hours to fully dry. How long does it take for vinyl dye to start seeping into itself? I have a few runs that don’t look like they’re going anywhere.
Has anyone tried wetsanding yet? I was thinking about taking some 450 grit paper and sanding the coat down to a smooth finish, and then laying a nice clear coat on it. Any thoughts?
Hey guys i have a question. I removed the insides to paint my PS3 SE case. Painted it and put the stick all together again but i get no response from the stick now. My start, select, home button, jlf nothing. what did i do wrong? I put everything in its rightful place, was i supposed to keep the guts of the SE in some special enclosure?
