I dunno why the next movie would or should take place on Earth again. The logical solution would be to make the sequel about us going to their dimension, and taking them out with a small army of Jaeger’s.
Do you know what blunt trauma is?
That’s what a concussion is, for perspective.
Concussions without treatment = auto-death, only a matter of time.
Punches from titanic(the size of skycrapers, literally) motherfucking robots have a LOT of effect on kaiju.
The 1st kaiju killed had it’s neck snapped by one.
They mention early on prior to Jaeger’s to took their conventional weapons several days before they could bring a Kaiju down. Each of the Kaiju had different classifications, the ones we saw in the movie were on on the upper scale hence, required more work and weapons.
Part of the problem as stated in the movie was that operations to get the Jaeger’s combat ready and supplied were damn expensive, you don’t bring RPG launchers to every fight if a good right cross could do the job instead of expensive ammo.
So much back and forth about common sense tactics. I’ve learned that there is a limit to what “the reader” should think the “protaonist” should do. Why Naruto didn’t make study clones to keep learning jutsu while he did other stuff is beyond me.
Mechs of some sort are needed for movements sake, but energy weapons would be a better vestment. Sniper rifles and lasers that can sever spines and cut heads. The sheer amount of energy needed to move a giant mech would be less than what’s needed for those lasers. But that wouldn’t be fun.
If they want to make the next one better, less water fighting, and more diverse Kaiju. All the ones we ‘saw’ fight were pretty similar with one or two differentiating traits, when they could have gone ‘full Kraken’ with multiple limbs. We had an EMP, but no other projectiles that I can remember. We started with one that had a huge knife on its head, but after that, the weapons were mostly ‘brute force’. The same goes for the mechs. They were ALL made pretty humanoid with just a few differentiating features, that really did’t amount to too much. There wasn’t even a heavy artillery mech. I would think that while the sword was a ‘special’ weapon, that hand weapons would be used a bit more…especially of the slicing variety…not just knuckles.
Those would make improvements. But really, that’s it.
Gosh I need to find my copy. I bought the 3D collectors edition or whatever last year, but only had a 21" 3D screen (the PS3 one). I knew I’d get a bigger one when I bought my house. Bought my house and everything was boxed up. I thought I knew what box it was in. Well we are still unpacking and I still havne’t found it despite having a big screen 3D TV now.
Did we ever see Tango fight though? And that’s not heavy artillery, thats two big ass guns. Heavy artillery would involve guns and missles EVERYWHERE.
It was hard to see the effectiveness of knuckle thanks to being a water fight, but even as it stands, slices > breakage. If “I” were designing a mech, the sole purpose would be long range debilitating, with defense to setup offense.
Razor sharp sword designed to cut through bone.
Shooting disc designed to do the same.
Blinding lights and blaring audio for disorientation.
Razor string designed to saw flesh.
2 stage cannon with first shot firing off with a shotgun effect, merely for stunning, while a second shot is designed to rip apart limbs.
Remote controlled ‘insects’ - piloted by land bound people - who’s sole purpose is to annoy and distract, as well as incapacitate the senses like hearing and sight.
And the whole time, backed up by a SECOND Jaeger who’s sole job is sniping. Smaller, more mobile, designed to aim for vital spots and deploy ‘traps’ of various sorts to slow and annoy. Possibly flight enable.
From what I remember as the war went on the Kaiju where showing up with counters to what the humans had thrown at them the previous time. So while slicing may have worked before, the next Kaiju could come through the portal with a hard shell or scales that deflect blades making blunt damage the better option. Long range weapon may have worked before, but then the Kaiju would come through with long range weapons of their own and that would make them a shit load harder to deal with. They where evolving to deal with the different tactics the humans threw at them.
Yes they were to a degree, but nothing against slice damage or being shot at. The developed things like the EMP attack to just shut the jaegers down and flight.
What that tells you though is that the aliens could ‘see’ how they were losing somehow.
Also, something to consider, their blood is basically a high-threat pollutant/poison. Kaiju Blue, remember? A LOT
of civilians died throughout the years of conflict because of that stuff.
So, the less body fluid spilled, the better, which is why beating them to death >>>>> ripping them apart; no blood around, no problem!
Also, plasma casters made ash of flesh, so they were compliant via vaporizing the blood as those sorts of shots
connected.
I’m going to keep it grounded though. What’s going to cause more harm…a large category 4 Kaiju rampaging through NYC, or one getting it’s body cut up before it gets there? I’d much rather have strategies that either prevent landfall or complete incapacitate the kaiju preventing major damage. Oh and while they are trying to evolve to get past our ‘defense’, we’ll research perfecting it to get past their evolution. Go from just sharp blades for severing, to blades that burn also via acid and/or heat, to vibrating blades with maybe a hacksaw motion built in, to blades with explosives laced through such that cuts open the body and leave it exposed to explosions, to electric blades designed to stun and slice. It would be evolving tech. And if they evolve solely to defend against those sharp blades, then they lose to the jaeger in the back that I said is focused on sniping, and of course those types of rounds will continuously evolve as well. the only way to get past it is through sheer numbers - and that my friend is a WHOLE nother debate.
Either way, unless your brute force ‘one punch’ will kill a category 5, then I feel you are taking unnecessary damage and increasing your risk.
F#ck I want to watch the movie now, but I have NO clue where my copy is
Take into account that they most definitely directly influenced how Kaiju DNA developed over time, and suddenly how the Precursors get natural “weaponry” to show up so quick(late add-ons to Otachi and Leatherback after Newt Drifted with the damaged brain; two-way street, yeah) makes a lot more sense.
Most of the Jaegers fought their foes at sea for good reason!
Relevant to that, the Miracle Mile(bit of a misnomer, that) is the 1st 10 miles out from a coastal city into the sea; that’s where nearly all Jaeger/Kaiju throwdowns happened, the term is fairly frequent when battles are about to happen the film, listen for it.
Also, Gypsy fought Knifehead in the prologue(at sea!) because Romeo Blue(the one in my avatar) was bypassed by Knifehead via swimming mad fast.
The more you know!
The forearm blades Striker had were superheated for just that. They didn’t slash through Slattern(THE biggest and toughest Kaiju in the movie) like nothing with no explanation!
Cherno Alpha’s fists were basically gigawatt scale tasers(official name for that is Telsa Fists) for punches landed, though they weren’t used in the movie.
Totally agreed otherwise. Even so, you gotta remember. Jaegers are prohibitively expensive; for example, Striker Eureka cost 100 BILLION
by itself. Then maintenance, modernizing(like with Gypsy and Cherno, over time), upkeep of fusion reactor fuel(I say fusion because, for instance, the plasma casters get the projectile material directly from the main reactor of the Jaegers who use them, IIRC; fission does NOT involve that much plasma, so my headcanon has Jaegers as fusion-powered, by stuff like this, the shape is a familiar shape, no? 2 guys in the lower left for scale:
, keeping power systems like that mostly-wear free and stuff, repairs, etc. etc…
We only had 2 and a half hours to see stuff, in the background materials this sort of thing is covered a bit better.
I recommend checking out Tales From Year Zero, and also Man, Machines, and Monsters.
I don’t mind stuff like “how the fuck do the mechs actually work?” staying unanswered. Ultimately, that’s not important, unless how they work (the fuel is PEOPLE!?) is relevant to the plot.
Now for something nonsensical that, obfuscated or not, added NOTHING to the plot: the need for two people to sync. If that nonsense idea was scrapped there could have been more mechs and less “lol we’re mind synced but still have to shout our special moves.”
