One Piece Thread: Gear 2nd!

When Goku and Piccolo learn to drive. Sometimes it can be really lolz like that classic, but most of the time it’s stupid.

 I rememeber that episode. So basically it has nothing to do with the main plot?

Yes. If it’s just some made up stuff it’s filler. Like Naruto having to Rasenken some ramen for his friends.

You lost me at N…N…Na…Naruto. :coffee:

But I get.

The definition of filler is not “has nothing to do with the main plot”, though the word is sometimes misused this way.

Filler content, when used to describe something in an anime that is based on a manga, means that it is content that did not appear in the manga. It is used to ‘fill time’, as a 22 minute episode can get through a 15-19 page manga in just a few minutes somtimes, causing the anime to ‘catch up’ to the manga (which is not acceptable).

Sometimes, filler content is cannon and approved by the original author or owner of the series/property.

pretty much what keits said.

Look back on DBZ. The anime caught up with the manga and while waiting for the manga author to come out with some new chapters. The anime people created new substories that weren’t in the manga. To fill up time until the manga is ahead of the anime enough.

Think back when Goku and Freeza were fighting on namek. Freeza goes and says that it’ll be 5 minutes before the planet explodes. In the anime it doesn’t explode for like 30 episodes later. Due to all the extra filler content that the anime added to extend the fight.

Filler normally takes the form of 2 things. Either really extending whats currently going on in the manga (freeza goku fight above), or creating completely new substories (the vampire arc in bleach, or the island that caused the strawhats to lose their memory).

In extreme cases the filler can get to be so bad that the anime series is canceled (see rurouni kenshin).

Since I’m a stickler for spelling (even as much as I make typos sometimes), I should note that while Keits is right about everything else, the word is actually “canon”.

That might have beenn my nn key just ranndomly double tappinng. It has beenn knnownn to do that sometimes.

Or, I just suck at spelling. Most creative types do. I blame my keyboard.

Ahhhh I get it now.

 for dbz example.

Hmm no wonder Ive heard that word tossed around as well.

Haha, I guess Wikipedia finally realized that too many people were getting weirded out by being stared on every page.

It’s not even really a spelling mistake given that “cannon” is obviously a real word. It’s just a problem that it is a word that means something completely different and could be rather confusing considering that cannons are also used in One Piece with some frequency.

It’s not like you misspelled it “kanon”, though that’s not really a misspelling either… (Neither is Kannon.)

Anyway, since we’re talking about different spellings, I suppose I should point that we mean “canon” as it relates to fiction rather than as it relates to religion or anything else.

Yep.

I get rather surprised are how many people haven’t ever heard the word. Then again, I should remember how atypical I am when it comes to most things…

Shut up already~

:F
