I am totally falling in love with 3s again, even though I’m playing the terrible anniversary collection on xbox version.
Reasons why I’m loving it:
-characters (still among my favorites in any fighting game, only game I will play ryu in, ken has not and will not ever look better, all the low tier characters are interesting to watch and play)
-Input tolerances and windows (reversals require timing, but not ridiculously strict, links are present, challenging and rewarding without being the end all be all of combos) Also the engine in terms of flexibility for inputs and juggles is well within reason. For example, being able to half circle from charge moves into super buffers and charge partitioning.
-meaties serve a purpose
-cross ups have significance without being abusable (i.e. no universal corner cross ups, auto corrects are harder to come by)
-movesets (sufficiently varied, mixing charges and qc’s in the same characters, moves switching based on characters being turned around etc. Thinking of Alex’s stuff in particular)
-meter management (I like having access to supers and ex moves at the same time but having to strategically pick a super because of that)
-Of course art style and animation, gritty and smooth and not super anime styled.
Honestly I’ve never had a fighting game I’m super in love with but if a game like third strike came out with focus instead of parrying (keeping fireball zoning legit and retaining the meter expenditure for FADC) and a similar input windows and meter/super balance choices, I think that may be my ideal game. I guess it’d be a blend of ST, 3s and SFIV all in one. Some games I really think over do the options for supers ( or helpers, mana whatever the jazz is called, AH comes to mind) where there are a ton of choices but limited useful ones. Maybe I’m just on a nostalgia trip at the moment but some stuff feels really nice about this game. I’m sure in a while I’ll remember what I got frustrated with too. Maybe it’s just cause I’ve gotten a bit better that I like the game more. But I’ve been thinking about what I like in games and this fits pretty well.
On that note, REALLY looking forward to 3s online edition and learning the characters I always wanted to play but didn’t have the skills for. Here’s to them not messing with the game too much (scaled up sprites and HDR style button config only please)
I’d really like Alex in AE, thank you and good night
