ppwtournament

I’ll definitely try to make it out there more. I can’t this week, and I will probably be out of town for the ranbat, but next week should work. If you guys play at any time midweek, I’m down.

Greetings, everyone, and ‘welcome back’ to those that have been out of the loop for a while.

In an effort to help up the strategic edge of our scene, I’ve decided to start offering “classes” (for lack of a better term) to those that are interested. This is, of course, completely expense-free, and I feel that it will assist those that might be struggling with certain aspects of their gameplay.

I’m going to start working on my curriculum tonight, but thus far here are a few of the things I’m wanting to cover over the course of time:

  1. Execution (timing, hand positioning, short-cuts, etc.)
  2. Fundamentals (footsies, zoning, spacing, throwing, etc.)
  3. High-level interpretation (i.e., how to extrapolate pertinent information from videos and in-person matches)
  4. Frame Data (reading it, understanding it, applying it)
  5. Mind-games (baiting/reading, set-ups, etc.)

I will be buying my own 360 and ASUS monitor in the very near-future, so I will have a lag-free set up in my room. I will likely hold these sessions at my place simply because it’s hard for me to travel. I’ll be open to days that work for the majority of the people interested, and they will by no means be set in stone; we have a lot of very busy students, so I understand the inability of folks to commit to specific times and days.

Currently, I’ll only be working on SSFIV, but when Marvel 3 drops I will be helping with that as well. This is NOT meant to single anyone out or suggest that you’re not playing correctly. This is, literally, just to help fill in the gaps that you might have been struggling to do yourself.

You can post here or send me a PM letting me know if you’re interested. From there, I can begin to gauge what I need to start prepping for.

Let’s get it hype!!! Arcade Edition and MVC3 are just around the corner!!! :woot:

^ You heard him, Mike.

Until your opponent just hurricanes through it Mr. Schaeffer? :stuck_out_tongue:

“Mr. Schaeffer”?? :wtf: Like…Paul Schaeffer? lol

Jeff Schaeffer. I was referring to a situation he talked about in one of his videos from a year or two ago. Nothing to be concerned with. He just talks about old, boring games anyway.

Yeah it was a supposed “unbeatable” strat that Tomo somehow figured out how to beat mid tourny match or something.

oh my mike - u sound so professional lol. Im gonna probably need help once mvc3 comes around…i have absotively no experience with vs games…well it might be more simple to say the sf4 is my first fighting game.

I will be onto mvc3 pretty damn hardcore when it drops.

This is not going to be a game you wanna skip out on the first month or even weeks. Its going to evolve fast and should be a lot of fun.

For those of you who have never played a VS game know that mobility is huge. This isn’t SF where you have to sneak your way in with footsies. Play styles are usually divided within 3 types.

There’s the keep away play style who toss all sorts of projectiles and walls to make the stage a maze for your opponent to get through. These characters usually suffer when the opponent gets up close. Its not a bad idea to use some meter to push back the enemy with these types of characters since space is more important. Assists are extremely important for this you will want to have an assist that helps with your keep away and an assist to push back your opponent (usually an anti air). Also don’t forget advance guard pushes full screen in this game so it’s definitely a must for keep away play styles.

Then there is rushdown characters. The majority of these characters have a lot of mobility. Mix-ups is the name of the game for these kinds of characters. They usually tend to have long combos that can end in supers and DHC’s. These characters benefit from assists that help there mix-up game, helps them extend combos, or help them setup a 50-50 or an unblockable reset (low and overhead assists).

Finally there are the heavy hitting characters. These characters are a lot like rushdown characters except they lack the mobility or speed to get in. The combos are usually pretty short but deal considerable damage. Assists that help lock down the opponent long enough for you to get in are a must for these characters. A lot of these characters have command grabs as well some of which have some combo potential afterward.

Of course some characters are a mixture of these play styles making them extremely versatile. Also the most important thing is to know how to block. I cant stress this enough but sitting in training mode all day just practicing your team’s combos won’t help you if you don’t know how to block your opponent’s combos.

Okay, so for anyone interested in playing Wesker in MVC3, here’s what I’ve compiled so far:

Like that more truthful notation mike

I know for sure Im gonna need some work in MVC. SSFIV I gotta learn to be more patient and not do random unsafe things trying to “bait” and catch my opponent so much. I realize that most matches I win , I win because I was very patient and didnt do anything flashy (read stupid). Im thinking Im gonna main a heavier team in MVC just because Im not a big obnoxious long combo sort of guy. Haggar, Spencer, and either MODOK/C. viper/ Thor (maybe she hulk) is looking like who Id want to team up.

Crossing my fingers for Team Hood: Doom/Taskmaster/BB Hood (even I though I have no concept of the game or how this team would work or even if 2 of the characters will make it in (especially BB). I just want a team with characters with all hoods and capes.
