So what? The controller is only one aspect of a genre.** It doesn’t mean all the rest of the aspects did not develop**, even when it comes down to hardware. Because you could not make a game like Guilty Gear on the hardware that ran Karate Champ.
It just means that X-Factor lvl 3 combined with Ouroboros is almost a free kill and a mindless aspect that overshadows everything else that will go on in the match. What’s your point? If you like it when the super meter dominates the game, instead of being one part of it, go back to 3S Chun and Yun.
This thread only shows your inexperience with the genre, as if you started getting into fighting games games only since 2009 or beyond.
I know some “OG” KOF players that really dislike XIII because the game became much more about bigger, longer combo’s and much stricter, tighter, meter management. In older KOF titles, particularly 98, if you landed a 4-hit bnb into a DM, that was easily 50% damage, and there was no super cancels back then (Although Kim had a sort of bootleg cancel with his stomp). In KOFXIII that will barely net you 25, maybe 30%, and with a super cancel that takes half a drive gauge. Drive gauge has such a big impact on the game when Hyper Drive mode enables you to pull upwards 50-60% with no power stock usage with some characters, and every character in the game is capable of killing with +3-4 power stocks. Trying to conserve power stocks is also more difficult because if you’re in a pinch, you’ll need defensive techniques like Guard Cancel Attacks/Rolls, so you can’t use those very often. Another thing is juggle combo’s were alot more strict in older KOF’s, while it’s alot more lenient in XIII, allowing for some nutty stuff. A buddy of mine remarks on how the corner is like 95% of KOFXIII play, he’s probably right.
The thing I dislike about XIII is that too many characters are missing alot of staple special moves or moves in particular that made them stand out, and kinda lack in variety, so they have EX Moves to act as a way to expand their attack list, but I feel like it was a cheap addition compared to just giving every character 1-2 more moves they could of used.
I dunno, I’ve been on a 3D fighting game high since Final Showdown was released… and really, I am just liking the 3D fighter approach more and more these days. Soul Calibur added a meter mechanic to the game, I’ve seen alot of mixed reactions to that, I personally don’t care for it, but I can’t really imagine a game like VF with something like a power gauge. Even DOA5 tried to add some form of flashy desperation moves, but I don’t really “get” that game yet.
MK also added meter, yet you never/rarely see X-Rays at all these days, all about that C-c-c-c-c-c-combo Breaker! I dunno what OG MK fans think of that.
So what, are you saying that outsmarting/outplaying your opponent has taken a backseat to “meter management”?
