canada, expecially west coast canada, is a yuppy haven
these games are more about showing the world the good points of our country or the west coast in particular to attract as many people to move here as possible. because there are a lot of indo canadians and asian canadian investors who want to keep loading their pockets with foreign money when above average families from abroad move here because it seems and is , for them, very appealing. there was i think 22 thousand protesters outside the opening ceremony because the canadian government while socialist. uses public money all the time to fund private sector ideas. the olympic bid that happened 9 years ago is just one of the latest things they dreamed up to use public money for private sector gain.
the security cost for the games is going to cost BC 1.1 billion dollars, just the security. when you pay high income tax like in canada, and you never see anything useful the money goes towards cept maybe the cheap (but long waiting list) healthcare system, people get angry.
for instance last years snow fall, all the roads stayed icey because we have like 1/3 of the salt trucks necessary to deal with real snow fall. we also have 1 provincial car insurance company that makes us pay around on average 300 a month for insurance. there are no competing firms and the insurance company is directly tied to the rcmp and the government with in house rcmp investigations teams. they made a lot of money because everybody was slipping and sliding around. and this year we dont have any more salt trucks. i guess they just bet on the fact that it wouldnt snow like it did last year and they were right. this year we had just a bit of snow like usual. (but what about next year)
also if that wasnt enough i can still pull more shit, im a proud canadian. taxi drivers are also now screwed since they built a special skytrain (monorail) to go to the downtown from the airport just for the olympic games. but that monorail will remain part of the public infrastructure and wont really be needed after the games. but will cut into taxi drivers somewhat for the rest of time. i was offered by a taxi driver at the bus stop a ride from where i was to where i was going cause he was going that way and all i he wanted was my bus fare, so i agreed cause the bus was gonna take another 12 minutes.
in short. canada cares a whole lot. about what it wants to care about.

ahhhhh the Olympics the epitome of pure competition.
I have to agree, only some parts of the ceremony was cool, but the rest were kinda boring. At least some of the Olympic clothing apparel are pretty dope.
