Official Soul Calibur 1 Thread

Anybody got a tier list? I play Lizardman, Seung Mina, Xianghua and just picked up Ivy. Dreamcast version FTW.

And the previous comments are right. Soul Calibur I is the best in the series. God, I hate III and IV looks…not so hot.

Guard Impact doesn’t seem to be up anymore, but if I remember correctly, their tier list was:

Taki
Maxi
Xianghua
Yoshimitsu
Astaroth
SiegMare
Hwang
Lizardman
Ivy
Sophitia
Voldo
Rock
Kilik
Mitsurugi
Cervantes
Seung Mina

And this was for the DreamCast version. I believe Astaroth was #1 in the Arcade.

Mitsurugi is at the bottom?! No way… I could have sworn that Seung Mina was the worst. Oh well.

Anywho, might you have detailed explanations as to why those people are tiered in their respectable places? I can already sort of see why some people are where they are (Ivy and Lizardman look about right), but I figured Xianghua would be lower, unless this is assuming all characters are played at full potential or something?

Man, I love talking about tiers, especially in a balanced game such as this.

Seung Mina is the worst. Mitsu is third from bottom.

I can’t remember all the things that each character had since I only used three of them extensively (Hwang, Sophie, Mina). Xianghua was fast and safe, similar to her SC2 incarnation. I think Mitsu’s main problem was his mid-range linearity, but I’m sure there had to be more to it. Kilik’s above Mina because of Monument shenanigans; 236 (QCF) while in block stun and you knock the opponent into GI-stun; this gave him an advantage over SiegMare, Astaroth, and Rock.

Taki had a bunch of BS. There was a way to do her 66B+G after being GI’d and you could still grab them. Maxi was all damage and pressure. Loads of blockstun, lots of natural combos, and a bunch of different attack options. Voldo had good moves, but crappy basic attacks.

I can’t remember much else. And yes, the game was pretty balanced. There was only one match rated one-sided, and that was X vs. Cerv: 6.5 in the wench’s favor. All other match-ups in the game were 6-4 at worst.

I must have remembered your post wrong when I made a reply; I thought I saw Mitsu at the bottom or something…

Anyway, I was still surprised to see him low-tier, he seems so powerful, but when I stopped to think, he did have a problem with horizontal mids and he seems awfully linear.

Anyone have Ivy stats? I saw a great FAQ at Gamefaqs that got me started, but I need a bit more in terms of strategy. Same with Seung Mina. I plan to get some vids of me and my friends posted, but I need to fix a signal distribution problem first…

That wasn’t a tier list it was a rank project.

A real list would be like Cervantes, Hwang, and Xianghua as top 3.

That was the only thing close to a tier list I had seen at the time.

Got a full one? Hwang and Xiang I can see, but not sure about Cervy.

Cervy just does alot of damage and could potential kill you in 2 combos which no one else can do.

Nah, there isn’t a full official list unfortunately. Although I imagine the game will be fully tiered in the next few months due to the X-box live re-release.

I was wondering why Cervantes was at the bottom…now I can stop asking myself if I am crazy or not…

I do remember Ivy being lower than was later in the series. She definitely has some trouble with mids, and recovery time. Some other stuff, too.

Cervantes is all about damage. Fighting him is a constant battle of caution as 1 mistake can cost you up to 50% of your life. However, he sacrifices some fluidity, tracking, and safety in return. He’s still arguably #1, though.

The thing I like about SC1 is that there are quite a few powerful characters all capable of winning. Pretty much anyone can compete and has BS that can be abused. However, the extremely short life bars are a thing people will grow to love or hate.

I think the short lifebars fit the series well. Its part of the reason I don’t like SCIII and IV. Its like they mixed it with Tekken or something. Now Tekken is not inherently bad, but i don’t think the emphasis on combos and attrition in something that should have been introduced to the series. I mean, its not like the series wasn’t selling before they started putting that crap in.

Bumping this thread, because I need some strats on Seung Mina and Ivy. Plus, no one has really discussed base 1 strategy and tactics in this game.

Does sc1(for 360) have a online mode?

No; I’m playing the dreamcast version personally.

SC2 > SC1
but I do love this game.

anyway… The XBL version doesn’t have online? why? that’s pretty lame…

I’d love to hear why you think that…

Anyway, just posting to say I finally got Soul Calibur matches up on my youtube account: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=5071A70A8F080675

Was also still hoping any Ivy players in SC could give me some tips.

Finally, I made a tier list based on opinions, some tourney vids and my experience:

Cervantes
Maxi
Xianghua
Hwang
Astaroth
Taki
Yoshimitsu
Mitsurugi
SiegMare
Sophitia
Kilik
Lizardman
Voldo
Ivy
Rock
Seung Mina

BUMP

Come on, people. This is regarded by many as the best 3-D fighter ever made, and a testament to when Namco actually use to make quality games. I don’t care if its step one strategy, tricks, random stuff, can we get some discussion going. :woot:

Er, Rock is actually pretty good in this game? Solid mid tier material, even if he is just basically Asta-lite (which isn’t a bad thing sine Asta is really good in this game).

Also, Lizardman is a beast in this game. He’s either high tier or top tier. He has a monstrous BB, among some other things. Why do you have him so low?

The thing about my tier list, is even though I have he’s near the “bottom”, I actually think of him as solid mid. What I was thinking when I made the list was to just to place the characters in line of who was “better”. For example, I placed Voldo lower than Kilik, when I actually think they are in the same tier. I was simply following the format Musourenka had when he listed the names. yeah, I’m gonna come back and fix that later.

As for Rock, you got me there - I haven’t had much experience with him, although I do know he is much better than SCIII. Tick throws and ambiguous lows are beast. Also find it kinda funny as I was taking notes that Astaroth and Kilik are clones of Rock and Seung Mina, yet are much better than them. :shake:
